Curcumin, a major component of food spice turmeric (Curcuma longa) inhibits aggregation and alters eicosanoid metabolism in human blood platelets.

In traditional medicine, Ayurveda, several spices and herbs are held to possess medicinal properties. Earlier we have reported that extracts from several spices, including turmeric, inhibit platelet aggregation and modulate eicosanoid biosynthesis. Due to their eicosanoid-modulating property, it was suggested that the spices may serve to provide clues to drugs directed to arachidonic acid (AA) pathway enzymes as pharmacological targets. Curcumin, a major component of turmeric, inhibited platelet aggregation induced by arachidonate, adrenaline and collagen. This compound inhibited thromboxane B2 (TXB2) production from exogenous [14C] arachidonate in washed platelets with a concomitant increase in the formation of 12-lipoxygenase products. Moreover, curcumin inhibited the incorporation of [14C]AA into platelet phospholipids and inhibited the deacylation of AA-labelled phospholipids (liberation of free AA) on stimulation with calcium ionophore A23187. Curcumin's anti-inflammatory property may, in part, be explained by its effects on eicosanoid biosynthesis.

Perinatal outcome of pregnancies complicated by threatened abortion.

One hundred and two cases of viable pregnancies with threatened abortion were studied in the department of obstetrics and gynaecology, Kamla Nehru Hospital, IG Medical College, Shimla between November 1987 and February 1989 and their perinatal outcome was evaluated. The pregnancies continued beyond 28 weeks in 61.7% of the cases. The incidence of prematurity was 19.0%. The incidence of low birth weight (LBW) babies was 23.8%. Apgar score was less than 7 in 22.3%. The incidence of neonatal complications was 25.3%. There was no perinatal mortality. In a control group of 50 cases, the incidence of prematurity and LBW was 8% and 4% respectively. Apgar score less than 7 was noted in 4% and neonatal complications were observed only in 4% of newborns.

The pattern of burden in families of neurotic patients.

The pattern of burden in 90 families with a neurotic patient, 30 each with dysthymia, generalized anxiety disorder and obsessive compulsive disorder was evaluated in this study. Burden was chiefly felt in four principal areas; financial burden, disruption of family routine, disruption of family leisure and family interactions. This pattern was similar among the three study groups. Analysis of problems perceived as burdensome demonstrated an increased concern among relatives regarding routine household matters, restricted leisure and ill effects of the patient's illness on the family atmosphere. Burden was significantly greater in cases of married patients, married relatives, housewives and employed patients. Such data, it is hoped, will help provide guidelines along which an enquiry into different aspects of burden can be conducted.

Effect of ginger on platelet aggregation in man.

Dietary supplementation of 100 g butter in 20 healthy male volunteers for 7 days was found to enhance platelet aggregation to a significant extent (P < 0.001). Addition of 5 g of dry ginger in two divided doses with fatty meal (in 10 individuals) significantly (P < 0.001) inhibited the platelet aggregation induced by ADP (adenosine diphosphate) and epinephrine, while in the placebo control group (10 individuals), there was no significant alteration in platelet aggregation. Serum lipids, however, remained unchanged in both the groups.
