Evidence for B0-->pi0pi0.

We report evidence for the decay B0-->pi(0)pi(0). The analysis is based on a data sample of 152x10(6) BBmacr; pairs collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB e(+)e(-) storage ring. We detect a signal for B0-->pi(0)pi(0) with a significance of 3.4 standard deviations, and measure the branching fraction to be [1.7+/-0.6(stat)+/-0.2(syst)]x10(-6).

Observation of a narrow charmoniumlike state in exclusive B+/--->K+/-pi+pi-J/psi decays.

We report the observation of a narrow charmoniumlike state produced in the exclusive decay process B+/--->K+/-pi(+)pi(-)J/psi. This state, which decays into pi(+)pi(-)J/psi, has a mass of 3872.0+/-0.6(stat)+/-0.5(syst) MeV, a value that is very near the M(D0)+M(D(*0)) mass threshold. The results are based on an analysis of 152M B-Bmacr; events collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance in the Belle detector at the KEKB collider. The signal has a statistical significance that is in excess of 10sigma.

Observation of B-/+-->rho-/+rho0 decays.

We report the first observation of the charmless vector-vector decay process B-/+-->rho(-/+)rho(0). The measurement uses a 78 fb(-1) data sample collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric e(+)e(-) collider operating at the Upsilon(4S) resonance. We obtain a branching fraction of B(B-/+-->rho(-/+)rho(0))=[31.7+/-7.1(stat)+3.8-6.7(syst)]x10(-6). An analysis of the rho helicity-angle distributions gives a longitudinal polarization fraction of Gamma(L)/Gamma=0.95+/-0.11(stat)+/-0.02(syst). We also measure the direct-CP-violating asymmetry A(CP)(B-/+-->rho(-/+)rho(0))=0.00+/-0.22(stat)+/-0.03(syst).

Measurement of branching fractions and polarization in B-->phiK(*) decays.

We present the first measurement of decay amplitudes in B-->phiK* and measurements of branching fractions in B-->phiK(*) decays based on 78.1 fb(-1) of data recorded at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB e+e- storage ring. The decay amplitudes for the different phiK*0 helicity states are measured from the angular distributions of final state particles in the transversity basis. The longitudinal and transverse complex amplitudes are |A0|2=0.43+/-0.09+/-0.04, |A(perpendicular)|2=0.41+/-0.10+/-0.04, arg((A(parallel))=-2.57+/-0.39+/-0.09, and arg((A(perpendicular))=0.48+/-0.32+/-0.06. The direct CP-violating asymmetries are found to be consistent with zero.

Clinicopathological characteristics of gastric carcinoma in young patients.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Gastric carcinoma is a common disease that usually affects older patients, rarely younger patients. Although the relationship between prognosis and the age of patients with gastric carcinoma is controversial, most investigators have suggested that young patients have a poorer prognosis. This study examined the clinicopathological features of young patients with gastric carcinoma. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the hospital records of 1,833 patients with gastric carcinoma to compare the clinicopathological findings in young (aged <36 years) and older (aged >/= 36 years) patients during the period 1988 to 1998 in a tertiary referral center in Gwangju City. Overall survival was the main outcome measure. RESULTS: Of the 1,833 patients, 137 (7.5%) were in the young age group. There were no significant differences in depth of invasion, lymph node invasion, hepatic metastasis, peritoneal dissemination, tumor stage or rate of curative resection. A significantly higher percentage of young patients had poorly differentiated histology ( P=0.0001). The young patients with curatively resected gastric carcinoma had a better survival rate than young patients with non-resected gastric carcinoma ( P<0.001). The 5-year survival rates of young and older patients did not differ statistically (39.6% vs 42.4%; P=0.254). CONCLUSION: Young patients with gastric carcinoma do not have a worse prognosis than older patients. The important prognostic factor was whether the patients underwent curative resection.

Studies of the decay B+/- -->D(CP)K+/-.

We report studies of the Cabibbo-suppressed decay B+/--->D(CP)K+/-, where D(CP) denotes CP eigenstates of the D0-D0; system. The analysis is based on a 29.1 fb(-1) sample collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric e(+)e(-) storage ring. We measure ratios of branching fractions, relative to Cabibbo-favored B+/--->D(CP)pi(+/-), of B(B--->D1K-)/B(B--->D1pi(-))=0.125+/-0.036+/-0.010 and B(B--->D2K-)/B(B--->D2pi(-))=0.119+/-0.028+/-0.006; the index 1 (2) denotes the CP=+1 (-1) eigenstate. We also extract the partial rate asymmetries for B+/--->D(CP)K+/-, finding A(1)=0.29+/-0.26+/-0.05 and A(2)=-0.22+/-0.24+/-0.04.

Observation of the decay B0-->lambda+cp.

We report the measurement of the charmed baryonic decay B(0)-->Lambda(+)(c)p with a branching fraction of (2.19(+0.56)(-0.49)+/-0.32+/-0.57)x10(-5) and a statistical significance of 5.8 sigma. The errors are statistical, systematic, and the error of the Lambda(+)(c)-->pK(-)pi(+) decay branching fraction. This is the first observation of a two-body baryonic B decay. The analysis is based on 78.2 fb(-1) of data accumulated at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric e(+)e(-) collider.

Measurement of branching fractions for B-->eta(c)K(*) decays.

We report measurements of branching fractions for charged and neutral B-->eta(c)K decays where the eta(c) meson is reconstructed in the K(0)(S)K+/-pi(-/+), K+K-pi(0), K(*0)K-pi(+), and pp; decay channels. The neutral B0 channel is a CP eigenstate and can be used to measure the CP violation parameter sin(2phi(1). We also report the first observation of the B0-->eta(c)K(*0) mode. The results are based on an analysis of 29.1 fb(-1) of data collected by the Belle detector at KEKB.

Measurement of the electroweak penguin process B-->X(s)l+l-.

We report the first measurement of the branching fraction for the inclusive decay B-->X(s)l(+)l(-), where l is either an electron or a muon, and X(s) is a hadronic recoil system that contains an s quark. We analyzed a data sample of 65.4 x 10(6) B meson pairs collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB e(+)e(-) asymmetric-energy collider. We find B(B-->X(s)l(+)l(-))=[6.1 +/-1.4(stat) +1.4-1.1(syst)] x 10(-6) for dilepton masses greater than 0.2 GeV/c(2).

Alterations in hepatic metabolism of sulfur-containing amino acids induced by ethanol in rats.

Alterations in hepatic metabolism of S-amino acids were monitored over one week in male rats treated with a single dose of ethanol (3 g/kg, ip). Methionine and S-adenosylhomocysteine concentrations were increased rapidly, but S-adenosylmethionine, cysteine, and glutathione (GSH) decreased following ethanol administration. Activities of methionine adenosyltransferase, cystathionine gamma-lyase and cystathionine beta-synthase were all inhibited. gamma-Glutamylcysteine synthetase activity was increased from t = 8 hr, but GSH level did not return to control for 24 hr. Hepatic hypotaurine and taurine levels were elevated immediately, but reduced below control in 18 hr. Changes in serum and urinary taurine levels were consistent with results observed in liver. Cysteine dioxygenase activity was increased rapidly, but declined from t = 24 hr. The results show that a single dose of ethanol induces profound changes in hepatic S-amino acid metabolism, some of which persist for several days. Ethanol not only inhibits the cysteine synthesis but suppresses the cysteine availability further by enhancing its irreversible catabolism to taurine, which would play a significant role in the depletion of hepatic GSH.

Root canal shaping with manual stainless steel files and rotary Ni-Ti files performed by students.

AIM: To investigate root canal shaping with manual stainless steel files and rotary Ni-Ti files by students. METHODOLOGY: Two hundred and ten simulated root canals with the same geometrical shape and size in acrylic resin blocks were prepared by 21 undergraduate dental students with manual stainless steel files using a stepback technique or with rotary Ni-Ti files in crown-down technique. Preparation length, canal shape, incidence of fracture and preparation time were investigated. RESULTS: Zips and elbows occurred significantly (P < 0.001) less frequently with rotary than with manual preparation. The correct preparation length was achieved significantly (P < 0.05) more often with rotary Ni-Ti files than with manual stainless steel files. Fractures occurred significantly (P < 0.05) less frequently with hand instrumentation. The mean time required for manual preparation was significantly (P < 0.001) longer than that required for rotary preparation. Prior experience with a hand preparation technique was not reflected in an improved quality of the subsequent engine-driven preparation. CONCLUSIONS: Inexperienced operators achieved better canal preparations with rotary Ni-Ti instruments than with manual stainless steel files. However, rotary preparation was associated with significantly more fractures.

Factor analysis of the metabolic syndrome among elderly Koreans--the South-west Seoul Study.

AIMS: To examine the relationship between the components of the metabolic syndrome and to explore whether insulin resistance unifies the clustering of components of the metabolic syndrome among urban elderly Koreans using exploratory factor analysis. METHODS: We included 1314 non-diabetic subjects over the age of 60 years, selected from a cross-sectional study, which was conducted in 1999 in Seoul, Korea. Factor analysis was carried out using the principle components analysis with Varimax orthogonal rotation of the components of the metabolic syndrome. RESULTS: We found four major factors of cardiovascular disease risk variables in our study subjects. Impaired glucose tolerance, dyslipidaemia, hypertension and obesity aggregated as the major domain. Obesity and dyslipidaemia variables were closely related and loaded on the same factor. However, hypertension was not linked closely with other factors of the metabolic syndrome. CONCLUSIONS: Insulin resistance is not the only contributor to the metabolic syndrome among urban elderly Koreans. Although the components of the metabolic syndrome were closely related, the finding of more than one factor suggests that more than one pathophysiological mechanism underlies full expression of the metabolic syndrome among elderly Koreans.

The most useful findings for diagnosing acute appendicitis on contrast-enhanced helical CT.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the most useful findings to look for in diagnosing acute appendicitis on contrast-enhanced helical CT. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Appendiceal helical CT scans with intravenous contrast administration (abdomen, 7-mm collimation; abdominopelvic junction, 5-mm collimation) of 71 patients with surgically proven acute appendicitis and 167 patients with alternative diagnoses were reviewed retrospectively. Three radiologists analyzed the following parameters: enlarged appendix (>6 mm in diameter), appendiceal wall thickening, appendiceal wall enhancement, no identification of the appendix, appendicolith(s), appendiceal intraluminal air, intramural air, extraluminal air, periappendiceal fat stranding, extraluminal fluid, phlegmon, abscess, lymphadenopathy, segmental terminal ileal wall thickening, focal cecal apical thickening, focal colonic wall thickening, and segmental colonic wall thickening. The features that best distinguished appendicitis from alternative diagnoses were selected with stepwise logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: Nine CT findings distinguished acute appendicitis from alternative diagnoses (P < 0.05): enlarged appendix (R = 0.739), appendiceal wall thickening (R = 0.525), periappendiceal fat stranding (R = 0.414), appendiceal wall enhancement (R = 0.404), focal cecal apical thickening (R = 0.171), appendicolith(s) (R = 0.157), extraluminal air (R = 0.050), intramural air (R = 0.043), and phlegmon (R = 0.030). Enlarged appendix (sensitivity, 93%; specificity, 92%), appendiceal wall thickening (sensitivity, 66%; specificity, 96%), periappendiceal fat stranding (sensitivity, 87%; specificity, 74%), and appendiceal wall enhancement (sensitivity, 75%; specificity, 85%) showed the statistically most significant association with acute appendicitis. CONCLUSION: On 5-mm-section contrast-enhanced helical CT examinations, enlarged appendix, appendiceal wall thickening, periappendiceal fat stranding, and appendiceal wall enhancement were the most useful findings for diagnosing acute appendicitis.

Performance evaluation of leachate treatment system using innovative sulfur circulation method.

A pilot-scale experimental study was carried out to evaluate the performance of an innovative method for early stabilization of landfill. This method employs sequential processes of: leachate collection; nitrification through aeration; sulfate addition in effluent tank; and leachate injection back to the landfill. This study focused on: 1) decomposition of recalcitrant organic matters, 2) the characteristics of denitrification, 3) sulfide oxidation for sulfate recovery, and 4) nitrification by aerating discharged leachate. It was found that, when sulfate (SO4(2-)) added leachate was introduced inside the landfill, sulfate-reducing bacteria decomposed recalcitrant organic matters like lignocellulose by using SO4(2-) as an electron acceptor and simultaneously sulfur-oxidizing bacteria denitrified the leachate using sulfides (H2S, HS-, S2-) as electron donors. These two types of bacteria existed not competitively but symbiotically on substrate utilization. Sulfate-reducing bacteria produced S2- while sulfur-oxidizing bacteria oxidized S2- to SO4(2-). During aeration, the concentration of NO3(-)-N increased from near zero up to 925 mg l(-1). Eventual denitrification efficiency in the simulated waste landfill was observed to be approximately 92.3%. Also, S2- present in the discharged leachate was converted to SO4(2-) again in the aeration process. Sulfate needed in this process could be recirculated. Therefore, the amount of sulfate required in the operation of this method could be maintained marginal after the initial addition of sulfate in the effluent tank. Decomposition of recalcitrant organic matters and denitrification hastened the stabilization of landfill. The results of this study indicated that this innovative method was effective and economic.

Association between blood lead concentrations and body iron status in children.

Blood lead concentrations and body iron status were investigated in 279 children. Blood lead concentrations showed no increase during iron depletion phase (stage I) but markedly increased from the phase of iron deficient erythropoiesis (stage II). Increased blood lead concentrations in anaemic subjects significantly decreased after iron supplementation.
