Small bowel obstruction due to gaseous distention of an intestinal balloon.

A case of small bowel obstruction caused by inflation of a sealed, mercury-filled finger cot tipped feeder catheter, used for enteral alimentation, is reported. The patient had infrapapillary duodenal obstruction, secondary to the intramural hematoma caused by blunt abdominal injury. The patient underwent surgery for the obstruction and the distended finger cot was decompressed. The mechanisms for such distention are discussed.

Hyperthyroidism and ulcerative colitis: report of two cases and a review of the literature.

Two cases of coexisting ulcerative colitis and hyperthyroidism are discussed. In both patients, thyrotoxicosis preceded the development of the ulcerative colitis. Exacerbations of the thyroid disease led to exacerbations of ulcerative colitis and consequent difficulty in the management of the patients. Although a review of the literature reveals a possible connection with abnormalities of iodine metabolism in the ulcerative colitis patient, no definite conclusions are drawn.

Squamous cell carcinoma of the stomach.

Squamous cell carcinoma of the stomach is a rare, unusual lesion which tends to occur at a somewhat earlier age than adenocarcinoma. Grossly and radiologically the tumor is indistinguishable from adenocarcinoma and may involve any portion of the stomach. Although the pathogenesis of this lesion remains unclear, most authors favor the "metaplastic theory" for the development of the tumor. In this case it is felt that the tumor probably arose from gastric squamous mucosa present congenitally in the lesser curvature.
