The use of organochlorine insecticides for public health programs is indisputably necessary in developing countries. Thus, there is a need to evaluate human response to these chemicals under local field conditions. The effects of a short-term, 16-wk exposure to hexachlorocyclohexane has been evaluated and compared in malaria spraymen with and without any previous occupational exposure to this insecticide by measuring the pre- and post-exposure serum hexachlorocyclohexane concentration. A significant increase in original serum hexachlorocyclohexane concentration. A significant increase in original serum hexachlorocyclohexane concentration was observed in subjects on their first occupational exposure (5X), compared to those with previous exposure (3X). All workers reached approximately the same serum levels within 16 wk, regardless of their history of previous exposure.
The efficacy of a recombinant vaccinia virus (rvv-GM-CSF) expressing the granulocyte macrophage colony stimulating factor (GM-CSF) as tumor vaccine was evaluated in the murine B16-F10 melanoma model. The vaccine was prepared by infection of irradiated tumor cells with rvv-GM-CSF. Control vaccine was B-16 cells infected with a recombinant vaccinia virus expressing Escherichia coli beta-galactosidase (rvv-lacZ). Pre-vaccination of naive C57BL/6 mice later inoculated with tumor cells and treatment of mice bearing tumors with GM-CSF vaccine inhibited tumor development and prolonged survival. Lung metastasis of B-16 was also inhibited by treatment with GM-CSF vaccine. The vaccine effects appeared to be tumor cell specific. The efficacy of the vaccine was comparable to a retroviral vaccine (MFG-muGM-CSF) in this system. The vaccine was also effective when rvv-GM-CSF was directly injected into the tumor. These data suggest that this vaccine approach has potential for use in cancer treatment, especially for patients with easily accessible tumors.
A pair of ischiopagus tetrapus twins were successfully separated in Calcutta in 1986. The gastrointestinal tracts were separated at a preliminary operation, and the definitive operation was performed 3 months later. Four iliac osteotomies, division of symphysis pubes, and reconstruction of individual pelves with dissection and separation of pelvic organs alloted to individual twins were the procedures performed in the definitive operation. The musculoskeletal results have been excellent in the present case.
A safe and simple thin layer chromatographic method has been developed for the estimation of niacin and niacinamide in pharmaceutical preparations containing other vitamins, enzymes, herbs, antiamoebic drugs, etc. The method involves removal of excipients from the preparation by ethanol precipitation and isolation of niacin or niacinamide from other ingredients by TLC on silica gel with water as developing solvent, followed by extraction in 0.1N HCl, and spectrophotometric estimation of the vitamin at 262 nm. The percent recoveries for niacin and niacinamide were 100.1 +/- 1.9 and 100.2 +/- 1.5, respectively.
Drug-addiction among and drug-related offences committed by young people are to be condemned, but the community at large, including families, parents and guardians, must share the responsibility for the actions of the young. The age of criminal responsibility is still an unresolved question, and as a consequence no uniform application of law and treatment may be prescribed. International concern for the drug-related problems of young people has been consistent; it is for the States to give high priority to the solution of these problems and to enforce their drug-control legislation. United Nations guidelines can help in developing appropriate national legislation.
The present method describes the estimation of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) from adult rat brain by thin layer chromatography (TLC). The major advantage of this TLC method is the sensitivity and repidity of estimation. About 93 to 98 percent recovery is possible by this procedure and this shows linearity up to 9 micrograms. Replicate analysis of GABA by this method shows a co-efficient variation of 1.31%
The forfeiture of the proceeds of drug-related offences does not seem to have received much attention as yet from British Commonwealth countries. Whereas in some of these countries specific legislation exists in relation to forfeiture, in many other countries the act of forfeiture falls within the purview of general criminal law. Forfeiture presupposes enquiry and search, two procedures which involve integral aspects of present-day human rights law, and which seem to be impeded at almost every stage of the process concluding in forfeiture. Time and the procedure for execution of judgments seem to be two significant factors in the successful enforcement of forfeiture judgments. Unfortunately, given the present practice of maintaining inviolability of bank secrecy, effective enforcement of forfeiture judgments is not possible. Perhaps an international convention may offer some assistance in the successful implementation of a forfeiture judgment, especially where the ill-gotten gains have been transferred to a foreign jurisdiction.
The sentencing policy of a country is based on extra-legal considerations, such as political, social and moral principles, although the sentencing procedure employs legal principles. In imposing sentences the concepts of recklessness, negligence or liability are controversial, but they seem to be determining factors or at least play an important role in most legal systems. Sanctions do not need any legal justification, they are mostly value-oriented. The deterrence theory of sanctions still seems to be playing a significant role. Despite its lack of legal support, sanctions seem to serve a purpose in society, even though they are not quantifiable or certain. In the case of drug-related offences, there often exists a tendency to disregard the criminal acts of drug addicts. Although the education and rehabilitation of drug addicts are believed to be efficacious, from a legal point of view the incidence of contributory offence, that is, in certain circumstances the participation of the addict himself, in enhancing illicit trafficking in drugs cannot be ignored. However, illicit traffickers must be subject to severe sanctions of law.
Physical parameters and pulmonary function tests (VC, FEV1, FEV1% and FEF25-75%) were collected in 112 urban industrial workers and 104 rural agricultural workers. These average values, values according to age and smoking habits were compared between urban and rural workers. Inspite of no differences in age, rural workers average height, weight, BSA is significantly lower than urban workers. A significant increase in VC value to the extent of 0.22 lit (7.1%), significantly lower FEV 1% value by 4.7% and reduce FEF25-75% value (4.7%) is demonstrated in rural than urban workers. Smoking is shown to produce airway obstruction in both urban and rural workers. A wide variation of PFT values between the present workers and other reported values in India is observed. This study indicates rural workers have better pulmonary capacity and less flow rates than their urban counterpart.

Use of a recombinant vaccinia virus expressing human interleukin-2 (IL-2) was evaluated for preparation of tumor vaccines. A/J mice were immunized against neuroblastoma (C1300) cells using a preparation of C1300 cells infected/transfected with the recombinant virus, vCF13, expressing IL-2. A second recombinant vaccinia, vSC8, expressing Escherichia coli beta-galactosidase, was used as a control. After three weekly immunizations with virus-transfected cells, the mice were challenged with 1 x 10(6) unmodified C1300 cells and tumor development was monitored. Tumor development in the mice was inhibited by immunization with vCF13-transfected cells, compared to those vaccinated with vSC8-transfected cells (P < .008). A group of mice (7/15) immunized with vCF13-transfected cells followed by tumor challenge survived more than 60 days, at which time all mice immunized with the control vaccine were dead (p < .006). Five of the mice treated with the vCF13 vaccine were alive for more than 75 days (P < .05), after which they were rechallenged with another dose of 1 x 10(6) unmodified tumor cells. Tumor development was not apparent in these mice for more than 45 days following the second challenge, suggesting that these mice were completely protected by this immunization. These results demonstrate that recombinant vaccinia virus expressing IL-2 may be useful for cancer gene therapy.
