Sialic acid content of serum, urine and leukocytes during pregnancy in the bonnet monkey (Macaca radiata).

Serum, urinary and leukocyte sialic acid content was determined in five bonnet monkeys (Macaca radiata) during the later two-thirds or pregnancy. There was a progressive increase in the levels of serum sialic acid till about one week prior to delivery, followed by a significant decline at parturition and a sharp peak shortly after delivery. The levels came down to non-pregnancy values by two months postpartum. The urinary sialic acid levels were also elevated during pregnancy, but there was no parallelism between the trends exhibited in serum and urine. The sialic acid content of leukocytes was in the non-pregnancy range throughout the period of the study. The results are discussed in relation to the possible role of high levels of serum-bound sialic acid in the protection of the antigenically foreign fetus from the adverse reactions of the maternal immune response.

Lack of seasonal changes in biochemical constituents of bonnet monkey semen.

The seasonal changes in the production of semen were investigated in four proven-fertile bonnet males (Macaca radiata), maintained under ordinary laboratory conditions. The various physical and biochemical characteristics of 190 ejaculates collected at different seasons of the year were analyzed. There were no significant changes in the responses to penile stimulation, in semen volume, sperm density, and in the concentrations of fructose, citric acid, sialic acid, maltase, amylase, and protein of seminal plasma, attributable to season.

Immobilized Enzyme Pipette, Impette. Routine estimation of serum and urine urea.

This paper describes the preparation, properties, principles of operation and use of a new device, Immobilized Enzyme Pipette or Impette in routine determination of blood and urine urea. Clinical trials carried out in a medium sized hospital gave very reliable and reproducible results with a very high precision.

In vitro correlate of tranplantation immunity: spleen cell migration inhibition in the lizard, Calotes Versicolor.

Sensitization to skin allografts in the lizard, Calotes versicolor, was assessed using the in vitro capillary migration inhibition (MI) assay. In the presence of the respective donor antigen, an appreciable degree of MI of sensitized spleen cells was observed as early as 4 days after grafting. A maximum level was attained on day 7 and this response was maintained as long as one month after grafting with only slight fluctuations in the level of MI. When the clinical manifestations of graft rejection culminated on day 35, the degree of MI was still at the maximum level. MI of allograft-sensitized spleen cells is an antigen specific event, and the same level of inhibition is observed whether the specific antigen is provided in the form of intact spleen cells or spleen extract.

IAEA-WHO cobalt-60 teletherapy dosimetry service using mailed LiF dosemeters. A survey of results obtaining during 1970-75.

The IAEA-WHO postal dose comparison service for cobalt-60 teletherapy dosimetry is an ongoing programme aimed at improving dosimetric accuracy in IAEA-WHO Member States. LiF dosemeters were irradiated under specified conditions in a water phantom at the participating radiotherapy centres and returned to the IAEA's Dosimetry Labotatory for evaluation. The participants filled in a data sheet giving numerical values of physical factors (such as per cent depth dose, tissue-air ratio, etc.) that they employed. Nearly 65% of the comparisons showed deviations within +/- 5%, a figure which is believed to represent the overall uncertainty of the method itself. Almost 10% of the measurements deviated more than +/- 15%. It appears that participants applying 'in phantom' output measurements have better control over the dose they administer. Many of the errors observed are due to the use of faulty values for the various physical factors employed, and to the fact that often a check of the output just before the irradiation of the LiF dosemeters was not carried out.

Shaping of isodose curves in intracavitary irradiation using the afterloading method. A feasibility study involving mathematical simulation.

The possibility of adjusting the irradiation scheme to shape the isodose curve around an intracavitary source arrangement was studied mathematically. The total number of millicurie hours of irradiation for each source position was derived by a linear programming approach, taking into account the shape of the tumor in three different cases. The practical isodose curves obtainable with the source arrangement chosen were compared with the shape desired.
