Planning to meet the needs of the hospitalized elderly.
With the elderly population increasing, the number of elderly clients served by almost any type of health care organization will continue to increase. What kind of planning does a hospital nursing administrator need to do to assure that her or his nursing service can give better care to a larger numbers of elderly clients? What are the staffing considerations? Services and facilities considerations? Staff education needs? Budget considerations? Quality-of-care issues? This article will discuss these questions and present Eitel Hospital's comprehensive approach to meeting the needs of the hospitalized elderly.

A plan for staff development in gerontologic nursing.
Although aging of the population is evident and increased use of health services by the elderly is well-documented, the knowledge base of acute-care nurses in gerontologic nursing may be insufficient. Nursing staff development educators are in a strategic position to respond to this deficit. The approach used by an 800-bed Veterans Administration Hospital to determine the gerontologic learning needs of its nursing staff and a plan to meet these needs is reported. Recommendations for other organizations that plan to provide staff development in gerontologic nursing are offered.
