Sexuality in traditional China: its relationship to child abuse.

The sexual and marital history of China for 3000 year is reviewed, indicating a general open humanistic attitude about sex, with little perversion, sado-masochism, or denigration of sexuality. Foot fetishism (particularly foot binding) has been extensive in the past, but less so since World War I. Respect for women and their sexual rights and importance has been related to the low rate of child abuse. Currently, restrictions on sexual freedom and psychological injury to children is increasing in the urban areas (20% of the population) with resultant increase in infanticide particularly of little girls.

Observations on the abuse of women and children.

From ancient times to the present the abuse of women and children has occurred in societies that have had a structure hostile to other societies (e.g., war is glorified), hostile punitive attitudes to its own population (e.g., few civil liberties and rejection of the underclass), and depreciation of women. The psychological characteristics of the abusers show depression, poor impulse control, and difficulty in loving. Psychological characteristics of the abused include depression and feeling unloved. The abused, depressed little girl grows up to be the depressed mother. Therefore, short-term planning will produce little or no benefit. Attention must be paid to the most important person in the world, the mother-to-be, the newborn female child.

The adolescent who does not finish anything.

Practical information for therapists who deal with adolescents who do not finish tasks is presented. The relationship of task incompletion to neurosis, psychosis, depression, homosexuality, and drug abuse is described, and techniques and guidelines for treatment are provided.

Early child development in China.

A psychiatrist compares his direct observations of child rearing in China with reports from other Western professionals. He differs from them in interpreting what all of them saw. He stresses the discripancy between psychiatric knowledge in the cities and absence of it among the teachers in the provinces. He distinguishes between contented children, and conforming children. Chinese emphasis on conforming, on discipline, the failure to acknowledge emotional factors, result in psychopathology going undetected or misdiagnosed and in emotional impovershment of the children.
