Dermatophytosis of tiger caused by Microsporum canis.

Microsporum canis was isolated from the inflammatory skin lesions of a Bengal tiger in April, 1979. In clinical findings rounded area of alopecia, 3 to 8 cm in size was observed on the right haunch and the tail. The skin lesions were covered with thin scales, but the inflammatory changes were not severe. Findings, on physical examination, were unremarkable and the animal appeared healthy except for the skin lesions. The infected hairs were invaded by the fungal elements and arthroconidia were around the hair shaft. Cuticles and cortex of the infected hairs were brittle. They were evidently digested and were easily pulled out from the hair follicles. In mycological findings numerous and typical macroconidia were observed. By cross mating of a isolate from tiger and Nannizzia otae(-) strains, cleistothecia were produced. Both organic iodide and undecylenic acid ointment were effective for therapy. In this paper the dermatophytosis of tiger caused by M. canis is described.

Vasoseminal vesiculography before and after ejaculation.

Vasoseminal vesiculographies before and after ejaculation were compared in 16 cases of male sterility. In 12 cases the contrast medium was excreted into the ejaculate and the contours of the seminal vesicles were contracted after ejaculation. In 4 cases, however, there was little or no contraction of the seminal vesicles. Here the seminal tracts were considered to be abnormal and this dysfunction seems to be the cause or at least one of the cofactors responsible for sterility. The degree of excretion of contrast medium into the ejaculate seems to depend on the function of the seminal tract. Therefore, a postejaculation seminal vesiculogram is useful as a parameter for estimating the function of the seminal tract.

Incompatibility of R plasmids derived from Salmonella and Escherichia coli strains isolated simultaneously from a bovine fecal sample.

Seven strains of Salmonella typhimurium were isolated from 2 fecal samples of calves, and the strains were resistant to ampicillin, chloramphenicol, kanamycin, nalidixic acid, streptomycin, sulfadimethoxine, and tetracycline. Also, 11 Escherichia coli strains were obtained from 1 of the 2 samples, and these strains possessed the identical drug resistance patterns as did the salmonellae. The thermosensitive R plasmids conferring sextuple drug resistance and mercury resistance from Salmonella strains were Fi- (no fertility inhibition) and belonged to incompatibility group H1, whereas conjugative 6 R plasmids isolated from 11 E coli strains were Fi+ (fertility inhibition) and belonged to incompatibility group FII. Thermosensitive R plasmids conferring sextuple drug (ampicillin, chloramphenicol, kanamycin, streptomycin, sulfadimethoxine, and tetracycline) have not been reported in Japan. Genetic relationship of R plasmids derived from the multiresistant strains of Salmonella and E coli was discussed on the basis of incompatibility properties of R plasmids.

Freezing index in cryosurgery on the prostate gland.

Cryosurgery has been performed on 18 patients with prostatic hypertrophy, and the following conclusions are reached: The quotient obtained by dividing the estimated weight of the prostate gland by the frozen weight obtained by an equation is called the freezing index, and this index can be introduced into the evaluation of the results of cryosurgery on the prostate gland. Cryosurgery was not markedly effective in cases of freezing indices over 0.76, and the incidence of complications was high in cases of freezing indices not more than 0.5. The ideal freezing index obtained empirically was 0.6. No dysuria has recurred during past three years in the cases where cryosurgery was assessed satisfactory in effect within two to three months.

A simple hemostatic method in suprapubic prostatectomy: extracapsular pulling sutures.

To block the vessels of the prostate, extracapsular pulling sutures were placed from the 4 and 8 o'clock positions on the bladder neck to the perineum prior to enucleation in 25 cases of prostatectomy. The removable pulling sutures successfully reduced blood loss during and after prostatectomy. Besides, the average operating time was markedly shortened. Postoperative courses of the patients were uneventful on the whole and there was no remarkable complication.
