Age-related characteristics of brain development in children living in the north.

The morphofunctional age-related development of the brain was studied in schoolchildren living in the difficult climatological-geographic and socioeconomic conditions of the north (Arkhangel'sk region). Of the 62 students in country middle schools, EEG amplitude-frequency, time, and spatial measures corresponded to age norms (European norms) in only 10 cases (16%). A further 26 children (53%) showed minor abnormalities in the form of an inadequate degree of organization of the temporospatial EEG pattern, mainly in the frontal and temporal lobes of the brain, with increases in the levels of the theta and delta rhythms, and the absence of any marked "functional nucleus" in the alpha rhythm. In the remaining 14 children (29%), EEG measures showed more marked delays in mental development (DMD), which were combined with learning difficulties and abnormal behavior. The retardation in the morphofunctional development of the brain in northern children averaged 1.5-2 years, which coincides with delays in hormonal and physical development described by other authors.

[Characteristics of the brain system activity and vegetative function formation in children under conditions of the European north (a problem study)].

Results of complex medical-physiological research performed during 10 scientific expeditions in Arkhangelsk region in 2003-2005 are presented. Influence of climatic-geographic, biogeochemical and social conditions of North-West region of Russia on sexual maturation, formation of the brain structural-functional organization, vegetative functions, immunological and biochemical status of schoolchildren was studied with the aid of modern neurophysiologic (computer electroencephalography, computer rheoencephalography, computed electric dipole origin tomography, etc.), psychophysiological and psychometric methods (evaluation of cognitive and mnestic functions, Vechsler 1Q estimation), biochemical assessment of monoamine oxidase and butyrylcholinesterase activity, physical-chemical analysis of macro- and microelements in the organism.

[Special features of age development of the brain in children living in the north].

Special features of morphological functional age development of the brain in children living in difficult climatic-geographical and social-economical conditions of the North (Archangelsk region) were studied. It was found that among 62 examined pupils of middle country school only in 10 persons (16%) amplitude-frequency and temporal-spatial EEG parameters are in accordance with passport age (European standards). 38 pupils (61%) have insignificant deviations such as insufficient regularity of EEG spatial-temporal pattern in frontal and temporal parts of the brain, increased theta- and delta-rhythms, absence of distinct "functional nuclear" in alpha range. In remaining 14 pupils (23%) EEG parameters suggest a more expressed retardation of mental development coupled with problems in the learning and inadequate behavior. Retardation of terms of morphological functional development of the brain in children--northerners equals 1.5 - 2 years, which is in accordance with terms of hormonal and physical development' retardation, described by different authors.

[Systemic organization of EEG in patients with different forms of schizophrenia].

The EEG of the frontal, temporal, parietal and occipital areas of the brain were examined in patients with recurrent, shift-like, simple and paranoid schizophrenia as well as in healthy persons. Analysis of the EEG involved two stages, using computer. Making use of the distinguished discriminant functions--components (waves) of the EEG interrelated in a definite manner, which may be "EEG markers", it turned out possible to perform differential computer-aided diagnosis of healthy persons and patients with different schizophrenia patterns. In patients with the recurrent and paranoid patterns, the accuracy of coincidence of the clinical diagnosis with that established by means of computer appeared to be equal to 61%. In groups with shift-like and simple schizophrenia, the accuracy amounted to 35 and 33%, respectively.

[Use of a method of evaluating interrelations of EEG components for computer-assisted diagnosis of pathologic conditions of the brain in psychiatry].

The possibility of computer-assisted diagnose of schizophrenia, manic-depressive psychosis, psycho-organic++ syndrome according to the structure of EEG components interaction was studied in patients and healthy individuals. Differential diagnose was performed using discriminant analysis of the EEG pattern structure in single leads and in 8 simultaneous leads as well (16 and 128 variables, respectively). Local and spatially-organized discriminants were singled out that allowed to diagnose distinct nosologic forms. The technique allowed to perform computer diagnostic of psychoorganic syndrome with the 78% accuracy. This parameter was 75% for schizophrenia and 71% for manic-depressive psychosis. Healthy subject were diagnosed with 90% accurateness. Differential diagnosis among schizophrenia and other disorders proved most difficult.
