[To 20-years anniversary of Chernobyl catastrophe: an attempt to study the vitamin, calcium, iron and selenium status of children and adult population in Slavutich and to correct elicited deficiencies].

The article concisely illustrates the vitamin and mineral state of population of town of Slavutich, including personal of Chernobyl Nuclear Power Station, children of pre-school age and pregnancy women, studied in 1992. Vitamins and minerals deficiency in the main of C and B vitamins and selenium was revealed in all the studied groups. Appropriate measures were developed and introduced to eliminate the detected dusturbances; but however some unsolved problems remained. Taking into account the forthcoming 20th anniversary of Chernobyl disarter, the authors of the come back to considering the obtained data in hope to atlract attention of medical scientific and public to the remained unsolved problems of micronutrient deficiency.

[The vitamin allowance of the adult population of the Russian Federation and its changes in 1983-1993. 1. Vitamins C, E, A and carotene].

The investigations carried out in 1983-1993 showed increasing of insufficiency of vitamin C and carotene in population of almost all investigated areas of Russian Federation. Insufficiency of vitamin C was found in 70-95%, pronounced deficit in 45-70% of adults. Deficiency of carotene was was detected in 30-90% of adults. Insufficiency of these nutrients is unfavourable long condition detected not only during spring but also in summer in different occupational groups of population. Vitamins A and E nutritional status of different groups of population are good enough in all seasons.

[The role of the adenylate cyclase system in the inhibition of gastric secretion by products of limited hydrolysis of kappa-casein].

The influence of the peptide inhibiting gastric acid secretion and derived from kappa-casein on the levels of cAMP, cGMP and adenylate cyclase activity of rat gastric mucosa was studied. Intravenous peptide preparation administration failed to alter cyclic nucleotide levels. The revealed decrease of adenylate cyclase activity was due to the presence of calcium in the investigated peptide preparation. It was assumed that cyclase system of the rat gastric mucosa cells were not involved in the inhibition of gastric acid secretion by the peptide preparations under study.

[Mechanism of inhibition of acid secretion into the stomach by peptides of kappa-casein].

The inhibitory effect of peptides formed in a reaction of limited proteolysis on stimulated gastric acid secretion was studied in rats as well as the changes of gastrin level in the blood serum and antral gastric mucosa. The acid secretion decreased after intraluminal administration of the peptide by 51% in the rat isolated stomach, and gastrin level decreased by 8.3% in the blood serum. The mechanism of action of peptide derived from K-casein was discussed.

[The vitamin C, B12 and folate allowances of pregnant women in Moscow].

A dietary supply of vitamins was studied in 212 pregnant women for 11 months. Mean blood levels of vitamins were found subnormal, the percentage of the women with vitamin deficiency increased. Especially inadequate was supply of folate followed by vitamin C. Intake of 1 dragee a day of polyvitamins "Gendevitum" improved the vitamin status of the examinees with the best results obtained in the first trimester. Folate and B12 levels decreased with advance of pregnancy irrespective of polyvitamins administration. Vitamin C supply was better in summer and autumn, folate levels were higher in winter and spring. It is suggested that vitamins C, B12 and folate deficiency observed in pregnancy should be corrected.

[Effects of the use of a multivitamin preparation "Pikovit" (KRKA, Yugoslavia) on providing nursery children with vitamins].

Providing of children aged 3-5 years with vitamins C, B1, B2, B6 and PP was studied before and after intake (during 3 months) of multivitamin "Pikovit" (KRKA, Yugoslavia) by the excretion with urine of ascorbic acid, thiamine, riboflavin, 4-pyridoxic acid and N-methylnicotinamide. Before "Pikovit" intake the mean level of thiamine excretion was close to the lower border of the normal level, while ascorbic acid and N-methylnicotinamide levels were lower than the normal in 73 and 69% of the children studied, respectively. "Pikovit" induced an increase in the mean values of excretion of all vitamins studied except for ascorbic acid. The multivitamin prevented the impairment of children providing with vitamins C and B6, and improved their provision with vitamins B1, B2 and PP. However, the doses of vitamins used proved to be insufficient for complete normalization of the vitamin status in children, therefore it is necessary to use "Pikovit" in higher doses as it is recommended by the firm-manufacturer.

[The provision of vitamins to school children in rural regions of Lithuania].

Providing with vitamins of schoolchildren was studied in some regions of Lithuania during the winter-spring period. The biochemical blood count has revealed insufficient providing of schoolchildren with ascorbic acid, beta-carotene, vitamins B1, B2 and B6. Decreased levels of ascorbic acid in urine, as well as micro-symptoms of hypovitaminosis (ascorbic acid, thiamine and riboflavine deficiencies) have been recorded.

[Biochemical indicators of vitamin provision to Orenburg's schoolchildren and effectiveness of prophylactic vitamin administration].

The study of providing with vitamins of schoolchildren in Orenburg conducted in the spring of 1985-1986 has revealed decreased content of ascorbic acid in 92%, vitamin E in 62%, vitamin A in 39%, folic acid in 38%, vitamin B12 in 14% of the children, the incidence rate of vitamin deficiency among the children in the senior forms was higher as compared to that in the junior forms and in boys it was more frequent than in girls. Additional intake of multivitamin "Undevitum" by schoolchildren during 2-4 months led to a significant improvement of their providing with vitamins that was expressed in normal vitamin levels and elimination of cases of deep vitamin deficiency.

[Effects of the preparation Undevit on the indicators of vitamin provision of Norilsk's schoolchildren].

The effect of the prophylactic use of multivitamin "Undevitum" on parameters of vitamin providing of schoolchildren in Norilsk was studied. The results of the investigation showed a positive effect of the prophylactic vitamin administration on providing with vitamins of schoolchildren in Norilsk and proved the necessity of conducting mass vitamin administration to schoolchildren.

[Providing with vitamins of different population groups in Sverdlovsk].

The investigation on providing with vitamins of varying population groups: preschool children, schoolchildren, students of trade schools and higher schools, workers and employees was conducted in Sverdlovsk. Low levels of vitamin C were detected in the blood of 40-92%, folic acid--in 10-76%, vitamin A--in 4-28%, carotene--in 8-60%, tocopherol--in 4-50% of the examinees. Vitamin B1 deficiency was noted in 36-68%, vitamin B2--in 17-71%. The highest deficiency of ascorbic acid was recorded in workers and students of trade schools and higher schools, of folic acid--in workers and adolescents of 15-18 years, of vitamins B1, E, A and carotene--in children and adolescents, vitamin B1--in employees. The mass character of vitamin deficiencies and their negative effects on the health of the population have necessitated broad-scale prophylactic measures: production of vitamin-enriched foods, regular use of multivitamins.

[To the 20th anniversary of the Chornobyl accident study of vitamin status and provision with micro- and macroelements of limited groups of people at different time periods since the accident at Chornobyl nuclear power plant].

Results of the study of the provision with vitamins and some micro- and macroelements of limited groups of people, who suffered from the accident at the Chornobyl nuclear power plant (ChNPP), which have been carried out by Ukrainian and Russian scientists during various periods after the accident, are generalized in the paper. Persons which participated in liquidation of the accident and lived during the accident in the territory, adjoining to Pripyat (the Kyiv region, town of Slavutich), people which worked at the object "Shelter" and ChNPP were involved in the inspection. It was noted, that in 1-4 years after the ChNPP accident in blood of liquidators the biochemical parameters displaying security of their organism by vitamins A and B1, remain lower in comparison with the same parameters in a group of relatively healthy persons which were not affected by the accident (control), that testifies to stable metabolic disturbance in the organism of people under irradiation influence. Selective inspection of the vitamin status of ChNPP and object "Shelter" personnel in 1992 has shown, that provision with vitamins C, B1, B2, B6 of the overwhelming majority of these people (67-91%) are much below the norm. Deficiency of vitamins C, B1, B6, folate and selenium is also revealed in an organism of 50-90% of women and children living in Slavutich. Deficit of vitamins in most of persons was characterized by polyhypovitaminoses, that is a combination of several group B vitamins deficiency at simultaneously low provision with selenium, and in a part of women and children--by low amount of iron. The results of long-term complex studies by groups of authors give evidence on importance and urgency of formulation and execution of International program on optimisation of nutrition, micronutrition status and health among population of affected areas in Ukraine, Bielorus' and Russia.

[Prevention of combined iron-polyvitamin deficiency in female workers in the machine-building industry].

The results have been presented of the study of ferrokinetic values and providing with ascorbic and folic acids, vitamins B2 and B12 in women with latent iron deficiency, before and after preventive measures with the use of the lactic acid product "Biolact" combined with the polyvitamin "Gendevitum". The data obtained have shown that latent iron deficiency is attended by vitamin deficiency. "Biolact" enriched with iron and ascorbic acid, combined with "Gendevitum" normalizes iron metabolism and vitamin providing.

[Heterogeneity and physiological activity of bovine k-casein proteolysis products].

Gel chromatography in columns with Sephadex G-50 and biogel P-2 was used to separate a number of fractions formed in k-casein of cow's milk after short-term treatment with swine trypsin. These fractions, similar to beta-casomorphin, are capable of reducing the respiration and heart rates in rabbits after intravenous injection in a dose of 100 micrograms/kg, that suggests their capacity for interaction with opiate receptors. Some fractions injected subcutaneously induce in starving animals an electroencephalographic picture of satiation, similar to that observed after cholecystokinin injections. Correlation of amino acid composition and physiologic activity has evidenced that cholecystokinin and opioid effects are caused by different peptides.

[Isolation, amino acid composition and type of action of gastric secretion inhibitors derived from k-casein].

Yield of an inhibitor of gastric secretion and its activity were increased after additional step of the k-casein purification as well as a result of increase in the enzyme/substrate ratio at the step of enzymatic hydrolysis and of substitution of the filtrate dialysis by extraction with ether. Amino acid analysis of the gel chromatographic fractions of inhibitor demonstrated the presence of para-k-casein fragments in its molecule. As shown by kinetics of inhibitory action the preparation included two inhibitors of gastric secretion. The inhibitor I exhibited its effect immediately after administration and increased the latent period of the gastric acidification. The effect of the inhibitor II was manifested with in 1.5-2 hrs after administration. The preparation isolated may be a useful drug in treatment of gastroduodenal impairments caused by hyperacidic states.
