Three cases with cerebral ischemic symptoms and an intracranial aneurysm are presented. Using [99mTc]hexamethyl-propyleneamine oxime (HM-PAO) single photon emission computed tomography imaging before and during the Matas test, a quantitative measurement method was developed for evaluating brain collateral circulation. The evaluation correlated well with findings of contrast carotid angiography. This noninvasive method seems to be useful for selection of patients for appropriate surgical treatment.

An electron microscopic quantitative study of corticorubral synapses was performed in the cat which acquired classical conditioning. Conditioned stimulus was applied to the cerebral peduncle and the unconditioned stimulus was an electrical shock to the forelimb skin. The proportion of corticorubral synapses contacting with somata and proximal dendrite was increased after conditioning. It was suggested that collateral sprouting and the formation of new synapses underlie classical conditioning.

A patient who had disseminated vascular tumors involving the bilateral ovaries, bilateral lungs and pleura, pericardium, and mediastinum is reported. The tumors were histologically of the capillary, and partly the cavernous, type of hemangioma. However, endothelial cell growth was prominent in some areas, especially in the lung, and the histology of the lung tumor resembled epithelioid hemangioendothelioma or intravascular bronchiolo-alveolar tumor (IVBAT). In the endocardium of the right atrium, an endothelial tumorous projection was observed, and there were tiny foci of tumor cell nests in the abdominal venous wall. Small lymphangiomas were also found in the subcapsular region of the spleen. These findings suggest that there had been an abnormal proliferation of systemic endothelial cells and that tumors of endothelial cell origin with diverse histological patterns developed with this condition as a background. The autopsy finding of fibrin thrombi in multiple organs as well as laboratory data including thrombocytopenia suggest that this case belongs to the "Kasabach-Merritt syndrome."

The use of a nomogram is described as a new noninvasive quantitative assessment of cerebral blood flow using N-isopropyl-(123I)p-iodoamphetamine (IMP) and single-photon emission computed tomography. The nomogram was constructed from a computer analysis of the flow value relative to varying washout rate of brain activities between early and late tomographic images, and partition coefficient between brain tissue and blood. The validity of this method was evaluated in normal volunteers and in patients with cerebrovascular disorders by comparing the cortical flow values (Y) estimated from the IMP-nomogram with initial slope indices (X) by the 133Xe inhalation method. A significant correlation (N = 42, r = 0.88, P less than .001) was demonstrated between them, and the regression line was Y = 1.6X-7. A development and confirmation of this method made it possible to measure flow values noninvasively with the use of IMP.

The growth temperature of Bacillus stearothermophilus was previously reported to affect the esterase band pattern obtained after gel electrophoresis. In this study gel electrophoresis of esterases was done on a group of Antarctic bacterial strains cultivated at different temperatures to investigate whether band shift due to a change in growth temperature was a general phenomenon or limited only to select groups. Most strains studied were in the Bacillus genus. Standard strains of known Bacillus species and other Gram-positive genera were examined for comparative purposes. A change in the esterase band pattern was observed as a result of variation in growth temperature. Two major esterase band were dominant in this diverse group of species.
A number of composites made from biodegradable polymers and hydroxyapatite were studied in vivo and in vitro in an attempt to develop biodegradable artificial bone fillers. Histological observation in rats revealed that polylactic acid, of low molecular weight (PLAoligomer), was rapidly resorbed and replaced by newly formed bone tissue when incorporated with hydroxyapatite and this suggested that the incorporated hydroxyapatite seemed to play an active role in the new bone formation. In vitro testing revealed that the solubility of hydroxyapatite was markedly enhanced when mixed with PLAoligomer.
An experimental study was performed to investigate the prevention of scar formation after lumbar laminectomy, using Elastase and the new polylactic acid (PLA) membrane containing Elastase. The experimental animals consisted of four groups: control group, E group (using intravenous administration of Elastase), P group (covering the laminectomy defect with PLA membrane), and P-E group (covering the laminectomy defect with "PLA" + Elastase" membrane). The animals were killed at varying intervals (2-12 weeks) and changes in the lumbar spines were evaluated histologically. Scar formation was suppressed most significantly in the P-E group, followed in order by the E group, the P group, and the controls.
A combined HCl-collagenase digestion technique and scanning electron microscopy were used to isolate the enamel organ and to confirm the presence of maturation ameloblasts of both ruffle-ended (RA) and smooth-ended (SA) types on maturing enamel in kitten permanent tooth germs. EDTA perfusion of animals fixed with aldehyde produced two or three belt-like shallow grooves (from 30 to 100 micron wide) running horizontally through the maturing enamel surface, coinciding closely with the SA distribution pattern. In animals that had been perfusion-fixed with unbuffered osmium tetroxide containing 2.5% potassium pyroantimonate, SEM-EDX analysis detected K in a superficial enamel layer overlaid by the SA layer. Potassium concentration decreased gradually toward the deeper layers. Very little K penetrated the enamel under the RA layer. Energy-dispersive x-ray analysis of Ca and P concentrations in the enamel revealed an even distribution of these elements throughout the superficial layer of maturing enamel. These results suggest that the SA layer forms an access route for K and EDTA and that, in spite of the obvious morphological and functional differences between RA and SA, the maturing enamel surfaces overlaid by these two cell types show similar degrees of mineralization.
