Parameter sensitivity analysis for activated sludge models No. 1 and 3 combined with one-dimensional settling model.

The aim of this study was to suggest a sensitivity analysis technique that can reliably predict effluent quality and minimize calibration efforts without being seriously affected by influent composition and parameter uncertainty in the activated sludge models No. 1 (ASM1) and No. 3 (ASM3) with a settling model. The parameter sensitivities for ASM1 and ASM3 were analyzed by three techniques such as SVM-Slope, RVM-SlopeMA, and RVM-AreaCRF. The settling model parameters were also considered. The selected highly sensitive parameters were estimated with a genetic algorithm, and the simulation results were compared as deltaEQ. For ASM1, the SVM-Slope technique proved to be an acceptable approach because it identified consistent sensitive parameter sets and presented smaller deltaEQ under every tested condition. For ASM3, no technique identified consistently sensitive parameters under different conditions. This phenomenon was regarded as the reflection of the high sensitivity of the ASM3 parameters. But it should be noted that the SVM-Slope technique presented reliable deltaEQ under every influent condition. Moreover, it was the simplest and easiest methodology for coding and quantification among those tested. Therefore, it was concluded that the SVM-Slope technique could be a reasonable approach for both ASM1 and ASM3.

ICA and water in Korea--overview.

The natural water quality in Korea has improved significantly in the last 20 years since major collective national initiatives were implemented by governmental agencies, non-governmental organizations, and professionals among many others. Recently instrumentation, control, and automation (ICA) technology has become one of the most important technologies for carrying out this task. Korea has become especially well known with a strong reputation for information technology and international business with commercial products like semi-conductors, computers, mobile phones, computer games, and other electronic products. In this paper the background of Korean water quality is reviewed and several of the most significant national projects related to ICA are discussed. The major projects may include the Automatic Monitoring Network of River Water Quality and the Integrated Management System of Wastewater Treatment Plants in Upper Basin Area of Multi-purpose Dams.

Forecasting influent flow rate and composition with occasional data for supervisory management system by time series model.

The information on the incoming load to wastewater treatment plants is not often available to apply modelling for evaluating the effect of control actions on a full-scale plant. In this paper, a time series model was developed to forecast flow rate, COD, NH4(+)-N and PO4(3-)-P in influent by using 250 days data of field plant operation data. The data for 150 days and 100 days were used for model development and model validation, respectively. The missing data were interpolated by the spline method and the time series model. Three different methods were proposed for model development: one model and one-step to seven-step ahead forecasting (Method 1); seven models and one-step-ahead forecasting (Method 2); and one model and one-step-ahead forecasting (Method 3). Method 3 featured only one-step-ahead forecasting that could avoid the accumulated error and give simple estimation of coefficients. Therefore, Method 3 was the reliable approach to developing the time series model for the purpose of this research.

Monitoring of coagulation performance and determination of coagulant dosage using a pilot in-line filter.

A rapid method using the pilot in-line filter to detect any change in coagulation performance was a proposed in this study. This method attempted to detect a change in coagulant dosage and mixing intensity by evaluating the filtrate quality of the in-line filter, which took the rapidly mixed water. Since the response time of this method was less than 10 min, it could be valuable to monitor the coagulation performance. The in-line filter was found more useful without underdrain. The in-line filter was more sensitive to a change in filtrate quality without underdrain than with underdrain. A new method, which combines a jar test with the in-line filter, was proposed to determine the coagulant dosage. This method reflected the actual plant situation more accurately than a jar test.

Effects of addition sequence and rapid mixing conditions on use of dual coagulants.

The performance of dual coagulants in clay suspension was investigated in this study using aluminium chloride and the cationic polymer as coagulants. According to the study results, the performance of dual coagulants was affected by dosage of aluminium chloride. Beneficial effect by use of dual coagulants were only noted when aluminium chloride was underdosed. The addition sequence of coagulants was important for the performance of dual coagulants. Simultaneous addition resulted in the best performance, while addition of the polymer first resulted in the worst performance. Addition of aluminium chloride first resulted in the similar performance as single use of aluminium chloride. Although sulphate ion improved the floc characteristics, similar results were obtained. The effectiveness of rapid mixing depended on dosage of aluminium chloride. Extending rapid mixing (6 min) was beneficial when aluminium chloride was underdosed so that coagulation occurred at the combination region. However, such benefit was not observed at the optimum condition, which belonged to the sweep coagulation region. Different floc formation caused the difference. Extended rapid mixing would be beneficial when collision between clay particles and Al(III) was necessary. However, such benefit would disappear at the optimum condition because rapid mixing could break up the floc already formed.

The effects of dairy processes and storage on insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) content in milk and in model IGF-I-fortified dairy products.

The effects of several dairy processes on insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) concentrations in milk and the storage stability of IGF-I-fortified dairy products were examined. The IGF-I content in raw milk determined by radioimmunoassay was significantly changed by the strength of heat treatments. In commercial manufacture of whole milk dry powder, IGF-I concentration was not significantly changed. A significant reduction in IGF-I content was found as the result of fermentation with a commercial starter culture. The IGF-I content in fortified milk and dried milk powder exhibited no significant changes over the tested storage periods (12 d for milk, 4 wk for dried milk powder), but the IGF-I content in the yogurt decreased significantly during storage. The use of IGF-I was varied by lactic strains and was apparent in the viable cells. When IGF-I was encapsulated using the surface-reforming process, the remaining IGF-I content after fermentation was significantly higher compared with that of the untreated control. Therefore, enteric coating of IGF-I before fermentation might be an effective method for the prevention of IGF-I degradation during fermentation.

Reversible renal vasoconstriction in a patient with acute renal failure after exercise.

Acute renal failure (ARF) with severe loin pain induced by anaerobic exercise is a rare condition that is accompanied by wedge-shaped contrast enhancement seen on computerized tomographic (CT) scan without evidence of rhabdomyolysis. An 18-year-old Korean male was transferred to our hospital for evaluation of mild azotemia, that developed after anaerobic exercise. The laboratory tests revealed that the serum creatinine was 2.1 mg/dl and the serum uric acid level was 1.6 mg/dl without any elevation of the serum myoglobin or creatine phosphokinase. Under the impression of exercise-induced ARF, we tried to determine the relationship between the occurrence of clinical symptoms, renal dysfunction and the characteristic CT findings by observing those changes prospectively before and after anaerobic exercise. After obtaining a written consent, the patient underwent a strenuous period of anaerobic exercise to induce the clinical symptoms. Before exercise, he was completely asymptomatic; his serum creatinine level was 0.9 mg/dl and CT scan of the kidneys showed no abnormalities. Loin pain developed 2 hours after exercise, and the serum creatinine level increased to 1.2 mg/dl 18 hours after the exercise. CT scan 18 hours after exercise showed multiple perfusion defects, and a 24-hour delayed CT scan showed multiple areas of wedge-shaped enhancement on both kidneys. These changes were completely resolved on the follow-up CT scan obtained 13 days after exercise with the return of a normal serum creatinine level. We conclude that reversible renal vasoconstriction is probably the main pathophysiologic mechanism of acute renal failure induced by anaerobic exercise.

Expression profiling of cyclin B1 and D1 in cervical carcinoma.

AIM: Cyclins are a family of regulatory proteins that play a key role in controlling the cell cycle. Abnormalities of cell cycle regulators, including cyclins and cyclin dependent kinases, have been reported in various malignant tumors. This study was undertaken to quantitatively detect cyclin B1 and D1 in cervical cancer. METHODS: A quantitative real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction and Western blot assay were used to analyze the expression of cyclin B1/D1 mRNA and proteins, respectively, in fresh invasive cervical cancer (n = 41) and normal cervical tissues (n = 10). RESULTS: There was significantly greater cyclin B1 expression in invasive cervical cancer than in normal cervical tissue (P = 0.019). However, cyclin D1 expression was not significantly different. A Western blot assay yielded similar results. CONCLUSION: Our results were consistent with the concept that up-regulation of cyclin B1 expression occurred in cervical cancer and an aberrant expression of cyclin B1 might play an important role in cervical carcinogenesis.

Branching patterns of the arterial branches supplying the middle vascular pedicle of the sternocleidomastoid muscle: a topographic anatomical study with surgical applications for the use of pedicles osteomuscular flaps.

When making a sternocleidomastoid (SCM) osteomuscular flap to include the clavicle and determining the rotation arc of the osteomuscular flap, it is very important to know the location and the origin of the superior thyroid artery and the distribution pattern of the SCM branch. Accordingly, in this study, the 50 SCM muscles and their arteries were dissected in 26 Korean cadavers, and the results were analyzed. The average distances from the origin of the superior thyroid artery to the clavicular and sternal heads of the SCM muscle were 87.6 mm (57.7-123.8 mm) and 131.2 mm (99.7-166.8 mm), respectively. The average distance from the origin of the superior thyroid artery to the SCM branch entering the SCM muscle was 30.1 mm (16.0-37.7 mm). After entering the SCM muscle, the SCM branches of the superior thyroid artery bifurcated into the clavicular and sternal branches at a point located an average of 58.8 mm (28.4-130.4 mm) above the clavicle. The distribution patterns of the superior thyroid artery were classified into six types based on the branching order and the dual supplies to the SCM muscle. Among them, type I in which the laryngeal branch first divided from the superior thyroid artery was the most common case (36%).

Autoimmune pancreatitis: radiologic findings in 20 patients.

BACKGROUND: Autoimmune pancreatitis is a new clinical entity that is characterized by peculiar histopathologic and laboratory findings and by a dramatic clinical response to corticosteroid therapy. We evaluated the radiologic findings of autoimmune pancreatitis. METHODS: Computed tomographic, magnetic resonance imaging, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatographic, and ultrasonographic findings of 20 patients with autoimmune pancreatitis in our hospital between November 2000 and December 2003 were retrospectively reviewed regarding changes and ancillary findings in the pancreatic parenchyma, the main pancreatic duct, peripancreatic vessels, and distal common bile duct. In addition, follow-up images were reviewed for changes in any abnormality seen on the initial examinations. RESULTS: Pancreatic parenchymal enlargement was invariably seen that was diffuse (n = 19) or focal (n = 1), with homogeneous contrast enhancement on computed tomography (n = 20) and magnetic resonance imaging (n = 15). Capsule-like rim enhancement was seen in six patients. There was focal (n = 18) or diffuse (n = 2) narrowing of the main pancreatic duct and it was usually multifocal (n = 17) in the former. Narrowing of the peripancreatic veins was seen in 14 patients. There was tapered (n = 15) or abrupt (n = 3) narrowing of the distal common bile duct in 18 patients, with contrast enhancement of the narrowed segment in eight. Invariably, changes in the pancreatic parenchyma, main pancreatic duct, peripancreatic vessels, and common bile duct were normalized on follow-up studies after steroid therapy. CONCLUSION: In this series, common radiologic findings of autoimmune pancreatitis were (a) diffuse pancreas enlargement, (b) multifocal narrowing of the main pancreatic duct, (c) narrowing of peripancreatic veins, and (d) tapered narrowing of the distal common bile duct with frequent contrast enhancement. These findings were usually reversible with steroid therapy.

Characterization of a pollen-preferential gene, BAN102, from Chinese cabbage.

We isolated and characterized a pollen-preferential gene, BAN102, from Chinese cabbage and analyzed the activity of its promoter. There were three or four copies of the BAN102 gene in the Chinese cabbage genome that specifically expressed in pollen and pollen tube. There were 2137 bp of BAN102 genomic clone comprising 186 bp of protein coding region, and 1178 bp of 5' and 773 bp of 3' non-coding regions. TATA box were located at 1071 nt of the promoter region while the polyadenylation signal and polyadenylation site were at 1470 and 1486 nt of the 3' non-coding region. BLAST search of BAN102 sequence showed that coding region of BAN102 gene was the greatest percent similarity with arabinogalactan protein (AGP23) gene from Arabidopsis thaliana. Promoter analysis using GUS gene as a reporter showed that the pollen-specificity of BAN102 resided within the -112 to -44 bp of proximal promoter from the transient expression in tobacco and Chinese cabbage plants.

Quantitative assessments of the effect of bilateral subthalamic stimulation on multiple aspects of sensorimotor function for patients with Parkinson's disease.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the subthalamic nucleus (STN) is effective for the treatment of advanced Parkinson's disease. Most studies have evaluated the effectiveness of DBS of the STN using clinical motor scores or simple timed tests of motor function. There have been few studies that quantitatively assessed the outcome of STN DBS using multiple testing paradigms. In the current study, 11 patients who had bilateral STN DBS were quantitatively evaluated under four conditions using gait, postural control, and gait initiation. The four conditions included the medication on/stimulation on (M_on/S_on), medication on/stimulation off (M_on/S_off), medication off/stimulation on (M_off/S_on), and medication off/stimulation off (M_off/S_off) conditions. DBS of the STN significantly increased walking speed with and without levodopa, but had no influence on the cadence. The addition of levodopa had a minimal additional effect on walking speed. The effect of STN DBS on gait initiation approached the significant level. The mean values of lateral body sway during quiet standing increased moderately with medication and/or DBS, but the changes were not statistically significant. Future studies need to determine whether or not there is a potential negative effect of STN DBS on the postural control.

Varying Ti-6Al-4V surface roughness induces different early morphologic and molecular responses in MG63 osteoblast-like cells.

Osteoblast response to Ti implants depends not only on the chemistry of the implant but also on the physical properties of the implant surface, such as microtopography and roughness. This study was undertaken to examine early changes in cell morphology and gene expression during the early phase of osteoblast interaction with titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V) surfaces of two different roughnesses. MG63 osteoblast-like cells were cultured for 2, 6, 24, and 72 h on smooth (Ra=0.18+/-0.03 microm) and rough (Ra=2.95+/-0.23 microm) Ti-6Al-4V surfaces. Changes in cell proliferation were assessed by measuring cell number after 72 h in culture. Morphological characteristics were observed by scanning electron microscopy after 2, 6, and 24 h of culture. Changes in gene expression for extracellular signal-regulated kinase 2 (Erk2), type I collagen (alpha2[I] collagen), phospholipase C-gamma2 (Plc-gamma2), and beta-actin were measured by RT-PCR after 6 and 24 h in culture. Cell number was significantly higher on the smooth surface. In scanning electron micrographs, cells on smooth Ti-6Al-4V were spherical and raised up from the surface after 2 h in culture. In contrast, cells on the rough surface adopted an irregular, elongated shape that spanned across pits in the surface. At 24 h, cells on the smooth surface had flattened, become elongate, and covered the surface. In contrast, cells on the rough surface appeared more differentiated in shape and the margins of the cells were irregular, with many processes extending out, following the contour of the surface. Of the genes examined, only Erk2 and beta-actin showed a change in expression with surface roughness. Both genes were upregulated (p<0.05) on the rough surface at 6 h. These results indicate that Ti-6Al-4V surface roughness affects osteoblast proliferation, morphology, and gene expression, and that these effects can be measured after periods as short as 2-6 h.

Bilateral subthalamic stimulation improves gait initiation in patients with Parkinson's disease.

Impaired gait initiation is one of the typical sign of advanced Parkinson's disease (PD). This is the first study to examine quantitatively the effect of deep brain stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus on the performance of gait initiation for patients with advanced PD. A total of 11 patients after surgery of bilateral deep brain stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus (STN) were tested in both the deep brain stimulation (DBS) ON and OFF conditions and/or in both the medication ON (i.e., with the usual dosage of antiparkinsonian medications administered) and OFF (i.e., with the usual dosage of antiparkinsonian medications withheld) conditions. DBS had no effect on the onset of anticipatory postural adjustment (APA). The effect of DBS approached significant level for the onset of swing foot lifting, but reached significant level for the delay of swing foot lifting. DBS significantly increased the amplitude of the APA, amplitude of reactive shear forces on both feet, and amplitude of COP in both anterior-posterior and medial-lateral directions. It is concluded that DBS significantly improved the performance of patients with advanced PD in gait initiation.

Galactose-carrying polymers as extracellular matrices for liver tissue engineering.

Extracellular matrix (ECM) plays important roles in tissue engineering because cellular growth and differentiation, in the two-dimensional cell culture as well as in the three-dimensional space of the developing organism, require ECM with which the cells can interact. Especially, the bioartificial liver-assist device or regeneration of the liver-tissue substitutes for liver tissue engineering requires a suitable ECM for hepatocyte culture because hepatocytes are anchorage-dependent cells and are highly sensitive to the ECM milieu for the maintenance of their viability and differentiated functions. Galactose-carrying synthetic ECMs derived from synthetic polymers and natural polymers bind hepatocytes through a receptor-mediated mechanism, resulting in enhanced hepatocyte functions. Attachment and functions of hepatocytes were affected by physico-chemical properties including ECM geometry as well as the type, density and orientation of galactose. Also, cellular environment, medium composition and dynamic culture system influenced liver-specific functions of hepatocytes beside ECM.

Microcystic meningiomas: radiological characteristics of 16 cases.

BACKGROUND: As a rare subtype of meningioma, only a few reports deal with radiological characteristics of microcystic meningiomas and the problem remains controversial. The authors have analyzed the radiological findings of a series of microcystic meningiomas with a special focus on magnetic resonance images (MRI) and conventional angiography. METHOD: Sixteen patients of histologically proven microcystic meningiomas were included. Analysis of preoperative MRI including signal intensity characteristics, enhancement patterns and peritumoural edema were performed and correlated with angiographic and histological findings. Peritumoural edema was graded using edema index (EI) which was defined as the ratio of VE/VT. FINDINGS: The tumours were uniformly visualized as a high-signal mass lesion in T2-weighted images and as a low-signal mass lesion in T1-weighted images regardless of tumour vascularity shown by angiography. T2-weighted images revealed that peritumoural brain edema was severe in 11, moderate in 1, mild in 2 and negligible in 2 patients and this was closely related to the co-existence of irregular tumour marginal enhancement. However, other features failed to distinguish these lesions from other subtypes of meningioma. CONCLUSIONS: The cases presented demonstrate that characteristic MRI findings suggestive of microcystic meningiomas are; (1) low signal intensity mass in T1- and high signal intensity mass in T2-weighted images; (2) high incidence of peritumoural edema.

Understanding the difference in oxidative properties between flame and diesel soot nanoparticles: the role of metals.

The purpose of this paper is to address the differences observed in the oxidative kinetics between flame and diesel derived soots. In particular, it has been observed that flame soot has a significantly higher activation energy for oxidation than does diesel soot. The hypothesis tested in this paper is that metals, possibly coming from lubricating oils, within diesel generated soot particles may be responsible for this effect. This is supported by the fact that addition of metal additives to diesel fuel is shown to have no effect on the activation energy of soot oxidation. The subject of this paper lies in testing the hypothesis by adding metal directly to a flame and extracting oxidation kinetics. Using a high temperature oxidation tandem differential mobility analyzer (HTO-TDMA) we extract particle size dependent kinetics for the oxidation of flame-derived soot doped with and without iron. We found that indeed addition of iron to a flame reduced the activation energy significantly from approximately 162 +/- 3 kJ/mol to approximately 116 +/- 3 kJ/mol, comparable with diesel engine generated soot with an activation energy approximately 110 kJ/mol. These results are consistent with the idea that small quantities of metals during diesel combustion may play an important role in soot abatement.

Method of measuring charge distribution of nanosized aerosols.

In this paper, we present the development of a method to accurately measure the positive and negative charge distribution of nanosized aerosols using a tandem differential mobility analyzer (TDMA) system. From the series of TDMA measurements, the charge fraction of nanosized aerosol particles was obtained as a function of equivalent mobility particle diameter ranging from 50 to 200 nm. The capability of this new approach was implemented by sampling from a laminar diffusion flame which provides a source of highly charged particles due to naturally occurring flame ionization process. The results from the TDMA measurement provide the charge distribution of nanosized aerosols which we found to be in reasonable agreement with Boltzmann equilibrium charge distribution theory and a theory based upon charge population balance equation (PBE) combined with Fuchs theory (N.A. Fuchs, Geofis. Pura Appl. 56 (1963) 185). The theoretically estimated charge distribution of aerosol particles based on the PBE provides insight into the charging processes of nanosized aerosols surrounded by bipolar ions and electrons, and agree well with the TDMA results.
