Sum-frequency generation in chiral liquids near electronic resonance.

We demonstrate experimentally that visible-visible sum-frequency generation in the bulk of a chiral liquid is observable near electronic resonant transitions. Although the process is electric dipole allowed, it is rather weak because the orientational average over molecules effectively reduces the bulk chiral nonlinearity.

Molecular identification of IgE-dependent histamine-releasing factor as a B cell growth factor.

The culture supernatants of LK1 cells, murine erythroleukemia cells, showed B cell-stimulating activity. Purification and NH(2)-terminal sequence analysis revealed that one of the candidates was murine IgE-dependent histamine-releasing factor (IgE-HRF), which is known to induce histamine from basophils. Recombinant IgE-HRF (rHRF) obtained from Escherichia coli- or 293-transformed embryonal kidney cells was tested for B cell-stimulating activity. Both rHRFs stimulated B cell proliferation in a dose-dependent manner. However, boiling or anti-HRF Ab abolished the B cell stimulatory effects of rHRF. Recombinant HRF showed strong synergistic effects with IL-2, IL-4, and IL-5 for B cell activation, with maximal activity in the presence of anti-CD40 AB: Recombinant HRF increased MHC class II expression of B cells. It also increased Ig production from B cells. Treatment with polymyxin B, a neutralizing peptide antibiotic of LPS, did not reduce the activity of rHRF. In addition, FACS analysis using PE-conjugated rHRF showed that HRF bound to B cells. Recombinant HRF up-regulated the expression of IL-1 and IL-6 in B cells. In vivo administration of rHRF or the cDNA for rHRF increased total and Ag-specific Ig synthesis. Taken together, these results indicate that HRF stimulates B cell activation and function.

Western and Chinese antirheumatic drug-induced T cell apoptotic DNA damage uses different caspase cascades and is independent of Fas/Fas ligand interaction.

Spontaneous or therapeutic induction of T cell apoptosis plays a critical role in establishing transplantation tolerance and maintaining remission of autoimmune diseases. We investigated the mechanisms of apoptosis induced by Chinese and Western antirheumatic drugs (ARDs) in human T cells. We found that hydroxychloroquine, Tripterygium wilfordii hook F, and tetrandrine (Tet), but not methotrexate, at therapeutic concentrations can cause T cell death. In addition, Tet selectively killed T cells, especially activated T cells. Although ARD-induced cytotoxicity was mediated through apoptotic mechanisms, Fas/Fas ligand interaction was not required. We further demonstrated that the processes of phosphatidylserine externalization and DNA damage along the ARD-induced T cell apoptotic pathway could operate independently, and that selective inhibition of DNA damage by caspase inhibitors did not prevent T cells from undergoing cell death. Moreover, we found that Tet- and Tripterygium wilfordii hook F-induced T cell DNA damage required caspase-3 activity, and hydroxychloroquine-induced T cell DNA damage was mediated through a caspase-3- and caspase-8-independent, but Z-Asp-Glu-Val-Asp-fluomethyl ketone-sensitive, signaling pathway. Finally, the observation that ARD-induced activation of caspase-3 in both Fas-sensitive and Fas-resistant Jurkat T cells indicates that Fas/Fas ligand interaction plays no role in ARD-induced T cell apoptosis. Our observations provide new information about the complex apoptotic mechanisms of ARDs, and have implications for combining Western and Chinese ARDs that have different immunomodulatory mechanisms in the therapy of autoimmune diseases and transplantation rejection.

5-HT1A receptor-mediated activation of G-protein-gated inwardly rectifying K+ current in rat periaqueductal gray neurons.

5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) has been reported to modulate analgesia produced by opioids or electrical stimulation of the periaqueductal gray (PAG). 5-HT increases K+ conductance and inhibits the firing activity of the PAG neurons. We examined the electrophysiological and pharmacological characteristics of the K+ current involved in 5-HT-induced hyperpolarization of dissociated rat PAG neurons. Among the neurons tested, 5-HT activated inward K+ currents in 30-40%, whilst the remaining 60-70% did not respond to 5-HT. 5-HT activated an inwardly rectifying K+ current (I5-HT) in a concentration- and voltage-dependent manner. I5-HT was mimicked by a 5-HT1A receptor selective agonist, 8-OH-DPAT, and was reversibly blocked by a 5-HT1A receptor antagonist, piperazine maleate, but not by a 5-HT2 receptor antagonist, ketanserin. I5-HT was sensitive to K+ channel blockers such as quinine and Ba2+, but insensitive to 4-aminopyridine, Cs+ and tetraethylammonium. I5-HT was inhibited by GDP(beta)s and was irreversibly activated by GTP(gamma)s. I5-HT was significantly suppressed by N-ethylmaleimide and pertussis toxin, but not by cholera toxin. Second messenger modulators such as staurosporin, forskolin, and phorbol-12-myristate-13-acetate did not alter I5-HT. The present study indicates that 5-HT-induced hyperpolarization of the PAG neurons results from activation of the pertussis toxin-sensitive G-protein-coupled inwardly rectifying K+ currents through 5-HT1A receptors.

Effect of dissolved CO2 on the potential stability of all-solid-state ion-selective electrodes.

The influence of dissolved CO2 on the potentiometric responses of all-solid-state ion-selective electrodes (ISEs) was systematically examined with four different types of electrodes fabricated by pairing pH-sensitive and pH-insensitive metal electrodes (Pt and Ag/AgCl, respectively) with pH-sensitive and pH-insensitive ion-selective membranes (H+-selective membrane based on tridodecylamine and Na+-selective membrane based on tetraethyl calix[4]arenetetraacetate, respectively). The experimental results clearly showed that the carbonic acid formed by the diffused CO2 and water vapor at the membrane/metal electrode interface varies the phase boundary potentials both at the inner side of the H+-selective membrane (deltaE(in)mem) and at the metal electrode surface (deltaEelec). The potential changes, deltaE(in)mem and deltaEelec, occurring at the facing boundaries, are opposite in their sign and result in a canceling effect if both the membrane and metal surface are pH-sensitive. Consequently, the H+-selective membrane coated on a pH-sensitive electrode (Pt) tends to exhibit a smaller CO2 interference than that on a pH-insensitive electrode (Ag/AgCl). When the all-solid-state Na+ and K+ ISEs were fabricated with both pH-insensitive metal electrode and ion-selective membrane, they did not suffer from CO2 interference. It was also confirmed that plasticization of the PVC leads to increased CO2 permeation. Various types of intermediate layers were examined to reduce the CO2 interference problem in the fabrication of H+-selective all-solid-state ISEs. The results indicated that the H+-selective electrode needs an intermediate layer that maintains a constant pH unless the carbonic acid formation at the interfacial area is effectively quenched.

Identification of vacuolar serine proteinase as a major allergen of Aspergillus fumigatus by immunoblotting and N-terminal amino acid sequence analysis.

Aspergillus species are common airborne fungi that have been identified as causative agents of extrinsic bronchial asthma. More than 10 allergens from A. fumigatus have been recently characterized by cDNA cloning. The objective of this study is to identify A. fumigatus allergens through immunoblot analysis using sera from asthmatic patients. IgE-binding components of A. fumigatus and IgE cross-reactivity among allergens of different prevalent airborne fungal species were analysed by immunoblot and immunoblot inhibition, respectively, using sera from asthmatic patients. The N-terminal amino acid sequences of major allergens identified were determined by Edman degradation. Among two batches (70 and 41 sera) of asthmatic sera tested, 19 (27%) and 14 (34%), respectively, have IgE immunoblot reactivity towards components of A. fumigatus. A 34-kDa protein that reacts with IgE antibodies in 15 (79%) and 11 (79%) of the 19 and 14 positive samples, respectively, may be considered a major allergen of A. fumigatus. The N-terminal amino acid sequences of the 34 kDa major allergen and the 30.5 and 30 kDa IgE-binding components of A. fumigatus showed sequence identity to that of the vacuolar serine proteinase from A. fumigatus. The results from immunoblot inhibition show IgE cross-reactivity among major allergens of A. fumigatus, P. notatum and P. oxalicum. Results obtained suggest that the 34 kDa major allergen of A. fumigatus may be a vacuolar serine proteinase. There is IgE cross-reactivity among serine proteinase allergens of A. fumigatus, P. notatum and P. oxalicum.

CYP2D6*4 polymorphism is not associated with Parkinson's disease and has no protective role against Alzheimer's disease in the Korean population.

CYP2D6*4 polymorphism is reported to be associated with Parkinson's disease (PD) and to have protective role against Alzheimer's disease (AD). Such findings are not extensively studied in the Oriental population, especially Koreans. The effects of CYP2D6*4 polymorphism on AD and PD were investigated by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism in Korean subjects. Heterozygous mutant allele was found in four of 93 patients with PD, 0 of 32 patients with AD and one of 121 control subjects (59 stroke, 59 normal controls and four other psychiatric disorders), but no homozygous mutant allele was found. There were no statistically significant differences between the AD group and controls, and between the PD group and controls. In conclusion, we suggest that CYP2D6*4 polymorphism does not confer susceptibility to PD in the Korean population. Also, due to such a rare occurrence of the CYP2D6*4 polymorphism, we can not confirm the protective role of the polymorphism against AD in the Korean population.

Liver transplantation in patients with hepatitis B virus infection: outcome in Asian versus white patients.

Previous studies have found that Asian patients transplanted for hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection had worse outcomes than white patients. The aim of this study was to compare outcomes in Asian and white patients listed for liver transplantation for HBV infection. Data of all patients with HBV infection listed for liver transplantation between January 1996 and June 1998 from 20 centers in North America were collected using a survey. Total patients enrolled were 325 (171 whites, 126 Asians, 28 other races). There was no difference in demographics, liver biochemistry, and HBV replicative status between Asians and whites at the time of listing. More Asians had hepatocellular carcinoma and fewer Asians had hepatitis C or D virus coinfection. At the time of this survey, 70 Asians (55%) and 99 whites (58%) had been transplanted. Actuarial 2-year survival posttransplantation for Asians (88%) and whites (92%) was similar. Recurrent HBV infection occurred in 8 (11%) Asians and 12 (12%) whites. Five patients with recurrent HBV infection died, 4 of whom were Asian. Actuarial 2-year survival for Asians versus whites with recurrent HBV infection was 60% versus 90% (P =.04). In this large cohort of patients, overall survival and recurrent HBV infection posttransplantation were comparable between Asians and whites. However, Asians with recurrent HBV infection posttransplantation had significantly higher mortality.

cDNA cloning and immunologic characterization of Pen o 18, the vacuolar serine protease major allergen of Penicillium oxalicum.

Penicillium species are prevalent indoor airborne fungi that have been identified as causative agents of human extrinsic bronchial asthma. In the preparation of standardized diagnostic reagents, it is imperative to define the allergens of these ubiquitous fungi. Results from our previous study on P. oxalicum suggest that the 34-kd major immunoglobulin E-reacting component of this prevalent Penicillium species is probably a vacuolar serine protease. The purpose of the present study was to define this major P. oxalicum allergen (Pen o 18) through cDNA cloning and immunologic characterization. The cDNA of Pen o 18 was isolated through a combination of reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction and 5'- and 3'-rapid amplification cDNA ends reactions. The primers used in these reactions were constructed according to the internal amino acid sequences of Pen o 18 and the conserved amino acid sequences of fungal serine proteases. Our results showed that a 1897-bp cDNA with an open reading frame of 503 residues was isolated for the proenzyme of Pen o 18. The encoded protein has a 16-residue signal peptide and a 119-residue prosequence. On maturation, the protein has an N-terminal glutamate that is the 136th residue encoded by the cDNA. Apparently the precursor also undergoes C-terminal processing with the cleavage of about 47 amino acids. The cDNA for Pen c 18 (the vacuolar serine protease allergen from P. citrinum ) was also isolated for comparison. Contrary to a previous report, the C-terminal region of Pen c 18 is similar to that of Pen o 18. Recombinant proteins (rPen o 18 and rPen c 18) with the putative mature N-termini and a his-tag were obtained by expressing the corresponding cDNAs in Escherichia coli. Serum samples from 7 asthmatic patients with immunoglobulin E reactivity to the 34-kd component of P. oxalicum also react to his-tagged recombinant Pen o 18. The presence of immunoglobulin E cross-reactivity between rPen o 18 and rPen c 18 was detected by immunoblot inhibition. Two monoclonal antibodies (PCM39 and FUM20) against fungal serine proteases react with rPen o 18, rPen c 18, and the 35/34-kd components in the corresponding crude fungal extracts. These components also react with immunoglobulin E antibodies in serum samples from asthmatic patients. In conclusion, results obtained confirm that the 34-kd major allergen of P. oxalicum is a vacuolar serine protease. The cDNAs of Pen o 18 and Pen c 18 encode precursor molecules that appear to undergo both N-terminal and C-terminal processing. Constructs beginning with mature N-terminal can be expressed in E. coli to produce recombinant polypeptides that are reactive to monoclonal antibodies or immunoglobulin E antibodies in serum samples from asthmatic patients. Results obtained may provide useful information and materials for preparation of standardized diagnostic reagents in clinical mold allergy.

Spontaneous resolution of infantile esotropia.

PURPOSE: To report the spontaneous resolution of infantile esotropia in 3 patients. METHODS: The clinical histories and the results of ophthalmologic examinations in 3 patients with infantile esotropia were reviewed and analyzed with reference to the literature. RESULTS: All 3 patients with infantile esotropia were diagnosed with 25 to 30 PD of esotropia before the age of 6 months. All of them had insignificant refractive errors. Against medical advice, they were not brought in for follow-up examinations. At the age of 34 months to 59 months, the esotropia of the patients had changed into exophoria, esophoria less than 4 PD, or orthophoria. All patients eventually showed dissociated vertical deviation and overaction of the inferior oblique muscles. Of the 2 cooperative patients, 1 consistently identified Titmus stereograms with 3000 seconds of arc and fused Worth 4 dots at near and at distance. The other patient could not identify stereo targets and suppressed one eye on Worth 4 testing at distance, though she showed no suppression at near. CONCLUSION: In these cases, infantile esotropia with a relatively small angle may spontaneously resolve without any treatment. However, all these patients showed poor stereoacuity, dissociated vertical deviation, and overaction of the inferior oblique muscles.

Monoclonal anti-double stranded DNA antibody is a leucocyte-binding protein to up-regulate interleukin-8 gene expression and elicit apoptosis of normal human polymorphonuclear neutrophils.

OBJECTIVES: To determine whether anti-double stranded DNA (anti-dsDNA) autoantibody could bind and affect the functions of normal human polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN). METHODS: Normal human PMN were incubated with different concentrations of a monoclonal mouse anti-dsDNA antibody (12B3) or mouse isotype-matched IgG2a. The binding of anti-dsDNA and PMN was measured by flow cytometry and interleukin-8 (IL-8) gene expression in PMN was detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). PMN apoptosis was justified by morphological changes. The cognate antigen(s) of anti-dsDNA on the PMN surface was identified by membrane biotinylation, immunoprecipitation and Western blot. RESULTS: The binding of PMN with anti-dsDNA was much higher than with non-specific mouse IgG2a (70.8 vs 2.0%). Anti-dsDNA at concentrations higher than 12.5 ng/ml significantly enhanced the production and mRNA expression of IL-8 by PMN. However, anti-dsDNA facilitated PMN apoptosis after 3 h incubation. Western blot analysis of biotinylated PMN cell lysates demonstrated that a 50-52 kDa membrane molecule is the cognate antigen of anti-dsDNA. CONCLUSIONS: Anti-dsDNA autoantibody up-regulates IL-8 gene expression and elicits activation-induced cell death (AICD) of human PMN via binding to a 50-52 kDa membrane-expressed molecule.

Nonlinear dynamic analysis of the EEG in patients with Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia.

To assess nonlinear EEG activity in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and vascular dementia (VaD), the authors estimated the correlation dimension (D2) and the first positive Lyapunov exponent (L1) of the EEGs in both patients and age-matched healthy control subjects. EEGs were recorded in 15 electrodes from 12 AD patients, 12 VaD patients, and 14 healthy subjects. The AD patients had significantly lower D2 values than the normal control subjects, (P < H > 0.05), except at the F7 and the O1 electrodes, and the VaD patients, except at the C3 and the C4 electrodes. The VaD patients had relatively increased values of D2 and L1 compared with the AD patients, and rather higher values of D2 than the normal control subjects at the F7, F4, F8, Fp2, O1, and O2 electrodes. The L1 values of the EEGs were also lower for the AD patients than for the normal control subjects, except in the O1 and the O2 channels, and for the VaD patients at all electrodes. The L1 values were higher for the VaD patients than for the normal control subjects (F3, F4, F8, O1, and O2). In addition, the authors detected that the VaD patients had an uneven distribution of D2 values over the regions than the AD patients and the normal control subjects, although the statistics do not confirm this. By contrast, AD patients had uniformly lower D2 values in most regions, indicating that AD patients have less complex temporal characteristics of the EEG in entire regions. These nonlinear analyses of the EEG may be helpful in understanding the nonlinear EEG activity in AD and VaD.

Microtubule- and dynein-mediated movement of Orientia tsutsugamushi to the microtubule organizing center.

The host cell microfilaments and microtubules (MTs) are known to play a critical role in the life cycles of several pathogenic intracellular microbes by providing for successful invasion and promoting movement of the pathogen once inside the host cell cytoplasm. Orientia tsutsugamushi, an obligate intracellular bacterium, enters host cells by induced phagocytosis, escapes to the cytosol, and then replicates in the cytosol. ECV304 cells infected with O. tsutsugamushi revealed the colocalization of the MT organizing center (MTOC) and cytosolic orientiae by indirect immunofluorescence assay. Using immunofluorescence microscopy in the presence and absence of MT-depolymerizing agents (colchicine and nocodazole), it was shown that the cytosolic oriential movement was mediated by MTs. By transfection study (overexpression of dynamitin [also called p50], which is known to associate with dynein-dependent movement), the movement of O. tsutsugamushi to the MTOC was also mediated by dynein, the minus-end-directed MT-related motor. Although the significance of this movement in the life cycle of O. tsutsugamushi was not proven, we propose that the cytosolic O. tsutsugamushi bacteria use MTs and dyneins to propel themselves from the cell periphery to the MTOC.

Acquired pendular nystagmus with voluntary inhibition.

This report documents a case of voluntary inhibition of acquired pendular nystagmus after head trauma. A 30-year-old male developed oscillopsia and decreased visual acuity, as well as findings of acquired pendular nystagmus with voluntary inhibition after head trauma. The EOG finding was horizontal 18-20 Hz bilateral symmetrical pendular nystagmus in all directions of gaze at near and distant fixation. Nystagmus did not change with 14 Prism Diopter base-out prisms on both eyes, but it was possible to abolish it intentionally. Baclofen and Clonazepam had no effect in improving the patient's symptoms and EOG finding.

Effects of BCG on ovalbumin-induced bronchial hyperreactivity in a guinea pig asthma model.

To test the effects of Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) on ovalbumin (OVA)-induced airway hyper-reactivity in guinea pigs, a total of 40 young guinea pigs was individually vaccinated subcutaneously with 0.2 mL of 2% OVA, 50 microg BCG, or a mixture of OVA and BCG (OVA+BCG). Airways were sensitized using nebulization with 1% OVA for 3 min once a week for two applications, followed by 2% OVA nebulized challenge for 3 min 1 week after the last application. Different concentrations of methacholine were used to detect airway hyperreactivities. At the third week, the guinea pigs were nebulized with either methacholine or OVA to test airway hyperreactivity. The OVA-vaccinated group presented with severe airway hyperresponsiveness after OVA and methacholine challenges; the BCG-vaccinated group showed mild airway hyperreactivity; and the OVA+BCG group showed the least amount of airway hyperreactivity. Lung histopathology in all groups, except the OVA+BCG-vaccinated group, showed severe thickening of the alveolar walls which became firmly fibrotic, and narrowing of the alveolar spaces was also noted. The guinea pigs in the OVA+BCG-vaccinated group had similar pulmonary morphology with that of naive guinea pigs, and had mild cell infiltration in the alveolar wall. The results of the skin biopsies at 6 h (2% OVA, 0.05 mL) and 36 h (20 microg PPD, 0.05 mL) after purified protein derivative (PPD) inoculation showed that infiltration of eosinophils and activation of CD4+ T-cells occurred in the OVA-vaccinated group. In the BCG-vaccinated groups, infiltration of CD4+ T-cells, CD8+ T-cells and macrophages occurred. OVA-specific IgG2 increased in the BCG-vaccinated groups after OVA-induced airway hyperreactivity occurred. The peripheral cell subpopulation showed that there was obviously increased activation of CD4+ and CD8+ T-cells in the OVA+BCG-vaccinated group. The phagocytic activity of macrophages also increased in both BCG- and OVA+BCG-vaccinated groups. The prevention of OVA-induced airway hyperreactivities using BCG vaccination in conjugation with OVA in these young guinea pigs indicated that it might be a good approach to avoid allergic reactions in humans.

186Re-etidronate. Efficacy of palliative radionuclide therapy for painful bone metastases.

Pain palliation with bone-seeking radiopharmaceuticals is an effective treatment modality in patients with advanced metastatic bone cancer. Several studies have shown encouraging clinical results of palliative therapy using 186Re-HEDP, with an overall reported response rate of +/-71% for painful osseous metastasized prostate and breast cancer patients. 186Re-HEDP is a very potential isotope with numerous advantageous characteristics for this purpose. Myelosuppressive toxicity is limited and reversible, which makes repetitive treatment safe. However, individual studies are difficult to compare, and are hampered by the numerous and different methods used to assess clinical response. Standardized clinical response assessment using the objective multi-dimensional pain evaluation model should therefore be implemented.

A cost-effectiveness analysis of biliary anastomosis with or without T-tube after orthotopic liver transplantation.

Biliary reconstruction continues to be a major source of morbidity following orthotopic liver transplantation. We wished to determine if choledochocholedochostomy without a T-tube was associated with fewer biliary complications and was less costly than choledochocholedochostomy with a T-tube. A retrospective cohort study of patients who underwent liver transplantation was performed. Patients were stratified into two groups: group I had bile duct reconstruction with T-tube and group II did not have a T-tube. The results were interpreted on an intention-to-treat analysis. We identified 147 adult patients who underwent initial liver transplantation. There were 76 patients in group I and 71 patients in group II. There were no statistical differences between the two groups regarding underlying cause of liver disease, patient age, gender or United Network for Organ Sharing status. As the decision to use a T-tube was made at the time of surgery, the two groups may not be strictly comparable. The mean hospital stay was longer in group I (31.1 +/- 27.9d) than in group II (18.8 +/- 15.5d) (p = 0.001). Biliary complications were statistically more frequent in patients from group I patients (25/76, 32.9%) than in patients from group II (11/71, 15.5%) (p = 0.01). There was a trend for the costs associated with diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for the management of biliary complications to be greater for group I than for group II, although this was not statistically significant (p = 0.235). Our study suggests choledochocholedochostomy without T-tube reconstruction is the preferred strategy for biliary reconstruction in orthotopic liver transplantation. It is not only associated with fewer biliary complications, but also less costly than using choledochocholedochostomy over a T-tube. Randomized prospective studies are needed to confirm our results.

IFN-gamma up-regulates IL-18 gene expression via IFN consensus sequence-binding protein and activator protein-1 elements in macrophages.

Constitutive IL-18 expression is detected from many different cells, including macrophages, keratinocytes, and osteoblasts. It has been known that IL-18 gene expression is regulated by two different promoters (p1 promoter and p2 promoter). When RAW 264.7 macrophages were treated with IFN-gamma, IL-18 gene expression was increased in a dose- and time-dependent manner. IFN-gamma activated the inducible promoter 1, but not the constitutive promoter 2. Mutagenesis studies indicated that an IFN consensus sequence-binding protein (ICSBP) binding site between -39 and -22 was critical for the IFN-gamma inducibility. EMSA using an ICSBP oligonucleotide probe showed that IFN-gamma treatment increased the formation of DNA-binding complex, which was supershifted with anti-IFN regulatory factor-1 Ab and anti-ICSBP Ab. Another element, an AP-1 site between -1120 and -1083, was important. EMSA using an AP-1-specific oligonucleotide demonstrated that IFN-gamma or LPS treatment increased the AP-1-binding activity. The addition of anti-c-Jun Ab or anti-c-Fos Ab to IFN-gamma- or LPS-treated nuclear extracts resulted in the reduction of AP-1 complex or the formation of a supershifted complex. Taken together, these results indicate that IFN-gamma increased IL-18 gene expression via ICSBP and AP-1 elements.
