Reflections on ethnocentrism and racism: a challenge for advanced practice nurses.

As nurses and patient populations increasingly reflect the changing demographics of the United States, it will be necessary for nurses to address the critical issues surrounding a multicultural society. Nurses have been relatively quiet on the topic of ethnocentric and racist behavior. If advanced practice nurses are to be successful in assisting nurses and organizations to embrace cultural diversity, understanding ethnocentric and racist behaviors is key to developing strategies to facilitate the provision of culturally competent care.

Attila the Hun versus Attila the hen: gender socialization of the American nurse.

Gender socialization of American nurses mirrors the socialization of women in our society. Societal influences have perpetuated the development of nursing as a predominantly female gender specific occupation. Determining how we can bridge the gap of our gender socialization and develop effective behaviors irrespective of our sex role could enhance our effectiveness as health care providers.

Change ... more change ... and change again!

Change is the only constant in the 1990s. The ongoing redefinition of health care services and provider roles has created unprecedented opportunities. Advanced practice nurses (APNs) can play a major leadership role in determining how these changes in health care will occur. Successful orchestration and management of change by APNs will be critical to accomplishing the transformation of health care in the United States.

Developing case management in a primary nursing system.

Primary nursing has been both a philosophy of care and a delivery model for many hospitals during the past decade. Although the authors still value the philosophy of primary nursing, they believe the model no longer is effective in their hospital. The authors describe the experience of changing the nursing care delivery system from primary nursing to case management in leveled practice.
