A "new" phenotype confirming a relationship between Cra and Tca.

The red cells of two sisters had very weak Cra and Tca antigens and reacted only weakly with the antibody of the Cr(a-) Tc(a-)person, Inab. Both sisters had an antibody, named anti-Dra, to a high frequency antigen absent from their own cells and Inab cells but present on Cr(a-) Tc(a+) and on Cr(a+) Tc(a-) cells. This is the third example in which both Cra and Tca antigens are either absent or show weakened expression on the red cells, but the first case in which the unusual phenotype is shown to be inherited.

Rosaramicin treatment of gonococcal urethritis in men.

The efficacies of two dosage regimens (2.0 g and 1.5 g each day for four days) of rosaramicin were compared in 40 men with acute uncomplicated gonococcal urethritis. After treatment 39 (97%) of 40 patients were asymptomatic and had negative cultures. Gastrointestinal side effects were reported for 12 (28%) of 43 patients; however, only two patients (5%) discontinued therapy because of side effects.

Structure and function of the adrenergic nerves in the canine pulmonary vascular bed.

The canine pulmonary vascular bed has been studied with an in situ, blood perfusion system in the closed chest dog. Utilizing this system, the question as to whether or not the sympathetic nervous system modulates pulmonary vascular smooth muscle tone and blood flow was examined. Stimulation of the left stellate ganglion and administration of exogenous norepinephrine increased both intrapulmonary small artery and vein pressure. The responses of the pulmonary vasculature to both stimuli were abolished following the i.v. administration of phentolamine. In contrast, blockade of adrenergic neuronal transmission with guanethidine and bretylium, or destruction of the sympathetic nerves to the lung with 6-hydroxydopamine or 5-hydroxydopamine, selectively abolished the pulmonary vascular responses to stellate ganglion stimulation. Utilizing both electron microscopy and fluorescence microscopy of the adrenergic nerves, the data demonstrated noradrenergic innervation of the canine pulmonary arterial and venous vasculature. At least for the larger arteries, the density of adrenergic innervation appears to be present at the adventitial medial border of the veins and penetrates into the arterial media of the larger arteries. The data clearly indicate that when the adrenergic innervation is not destroyed by removal of the lung from the body, the canine sympathetic nervous system appears to regulate pulmonary vascular arterial and venous resistance and probably vascular compliance.

Rapidly progressing dementia with filopodia-like cytoskeletal neuritic anomalies, but without Alzheimer changes.

An unusual case of dementia is reported. The patient was a woman who died at the age of 69 years and 6 months after a two years history of organic dementia. Possibly the disease was familial. Examination of the brain at autopsy revealed no atrophy. In routine histology the brain seemed to be normal. However, when the sections were stained with highly sensitive techniques such as an antibody to phosphorylated Tau (PHF-1), widespread neuritic pathology was discovered. Probably both, axons and dendrites were involved. Only few perikarya were reactive with the antibody. In some of them, morphologic alterations were reminiscent of Pick's disease.

Quality of life of patients with familial Mediterranean fever.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to assess the quality of life (QOL) of patients with Familial Mediterranean Fever (FMF) and to explore its possible contributing factors. METHODS: One hundred and two FMF patients were evaluated using a QOL Scale, and were compared to 124 healthy controls. The QOL scale includes 16 items, each measured on a 7-point scale (7 indicating maximal satisfaction). RESULTS: The total QOL score of FMF patients was significantly lower than that of the controls: 81.6 +/- 19.2 vs 88.0 +/- 12.8 (p < 0.01). Male and female patients reported similar QOL scores. QOL was inversely correlated with the number of FMF attacks in the last year (r = -0.302, p = 0.002), and with the number of FMF hospitalizations (r = -0.238, p = 0.017). Patients with widespread pain, sleep disturbances and headaches had significantly lower QOL scores than patients without them. CONCLUSIONS: The QOL of FMF patients was found to be impaired compared to healthy controls. Further studies are needed to determine the exact factors affecting the quality of life of FMF patients.
