[5-HT contents change in peripheral blood of workers exposed to microwave and high frequency radiation].

The relationship between 5-HT contents in peripheral blood and power density among workers exposed to microwave or high frequency radiation in the workshops were studied. At the same time, systems and disorder of central nervous system and cardiovascular system were examined. The results of study showed that the average 5-HT content in whole blood for high frequency radiation exposure group was lower than that of the control, but without statistical significance. Value for the microwave exposure group was significantly lower than that of the control (P less than 0.01). The 5-HT content of mechanical maintainers exposed to microwave of high frequency radiation were all lower than the contents of their corresponding control groups (P less than 0.01). But for the mechanic operators as compared with their corresponding control, no significant difference was found (P greater than 0.05). The power density exposed by the maintainers of both tested groups were all higher than that of the operators. The 5-HT contents in the whole blood were inversely proportional to the power density of microwave and high frequency groups. The incidence of neurasthenic syndrome, unsymmetric skin temperature in both limbs and hypotension was higher in the microwave and high frequency radiation groups than that in the control group. The incidence of bradycardia and some abnormal items of electrocardiograph in the microwave group was obviously greater than that in high frequency group, which may be related to different frequency exposed for these two exposure groups. Whether it is related to the contents of 5-HT needs further investigation.

Immunoreactive GnRH and TRH in the peripheral blood of ovariectomized and ovariectomized-thyroidectomized rats: relation to LH, TSH and PRL release.

Immunoreactive gonadotropin-releasing hormone (IR-GnRH) and thyrotropin-releasing hormone (IR-TRH), luteinizing hormone (LH), thyrotropin (TSH), and prolactin (PRL) in the peripheral sera of proestrus, estrus, diestrus as well as long term ovariectomized (Ovx) and ovariectomized-thyroidectomized (Ovx-Tx) rats were measured by radioimmunoassay. Ovx and Ovx-Tx rats were decapitated on days 50, 70, and 90 following operation. The concentration of serum IR-GnRH in Ovx and Ovx-Tx rats on days 50 and 70 post-ovariectomy was lower than that in intact females. Serum IR-GnRH level in rats 90 days post-ovariectomy was increased by 2- to 4-fold as compared with intact rats. The concentration of serum IR-TRH was gradually increased in Ovx and Ovx-Tx rats from day 50 to day 90 post-ovariectomy. Thyroidectomy did not alter the concentration of serum IR-GnRH and IR-TRH in Ovx rats on days 70 and 90 post-ovariectomy. Thyroidectomy increased serum LH and TSH levels but reduced serum PRL level in Ovx rats. There is no correlation between serum IR-GnRH and LH levels as well as serum IR-TRH and TSH or PRL levels, respectively, in chronic Ovx and Ovx-Tx rats.

Synovial chondroma of the ankle in a young child after recent trauma: CT and MR features.

We report a case of synovial chondroma of the left ankle in an 11-year-old boy presenting with soft tissue swelling after recent trauma. The noncalcified or nonossified intraarticular chondroma arising from metaplastic synovium has characteristic imaging appearance on computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). A lobulated mass of fluid-like density and signal intensity along with internal septa are characteristic features on CT and MRI. The knowledge of CT and MRI features of noncalcified or nonossified synovial chondroma is important to distinguish from the simple or complicated effusion, hemarthrosis, or other synovial process.

Familial enlarged vestibular aqueduct syndrome.

Enlarged vestibular aqueduct syndrome is a clinical disease entity associated with anatomic abnormality of the bony canal in the temporal bone containing the endolymphatic duct and sac. The definition of this syndrome is progressive sensorineural hearing loss with an isolated enlarged vestibular aqueduct. Familial inheritance of enlarged vestibular aqueduct syndrome is rare, and the correct mode of inheritance has not been discovered. This report is the study of familial inheritance with enlarged vestibular aqueduct syndrome. Clinical audiological, radiographic, and chromosomal analyses were performed in this case, which reports on two female probands who are offspring of normal parents. According to the study of pedigree, familial inheritance of enlarged vestibular aqueduct syndrome is strongly suspected as an autosomal recessive trait. Further study should be focused on discovering the genetic evaluation of familial inheritance of enlarged vestibular aqueduct syndrome.

A new stabilizer used in microencapsulation.

In this communication, a new microencapsulation method is reported to entrap solid drug powder in an aqueous system. A hydrophobically modified, random polyacrylamide derivative was used as a stabilizer: with a hydrophilic back bone and hydrophobic side chain, it showed good dispersing and stabilizing effects in the preparation of microcapsules. The preparation of streptomycin microcapsules, using poly(lactide) and poly(caprolactone), showed the successful entrapment of streptomycin powder which is readily soluble in water (solubility larger than 20 mg/ml). In addition, a low concentration of stabilizer (0.25%) is used and a short preparation process is also an advantage of the method.
