Comparative evaluation of efficacy of sodium fluoride, chlorhexidine and triclosan mouth rinses in reducing the mutans streptococci count in saliva : an in vivo study.

The primary objective of this study was to compare the efficacy of sodium fluoride (0.05%), chlorhexidine (0.12%) and triclosan (0.3%) mouth rinses in reducing the mutans streptococci count in saliva. 60 subjects in the age group of 12 to 14 years were selected from the schools of Mumbai and were equally divided into 4 groups. First 3 groups were test groups and the 4th group was control group. The subjects were instructed to rinse one full marked measure of mouth rinse for 1 minute, twice daily. Salivary samples were collected at baseline and after 2 weeks and cultured on M.S.B.agar. The number of mutans streptococci colonies were counted on agar medium. The results of the study confirmed that chlorhexidine mouth rinses are more efficient in reducing mutans streptococci count in saliva as compared to other mouth rinses.

Hypertaurodontism in molars and premolars: management of two rare cases.

The management of two cases of hypertaurodontism, is presented. The first case shows this uncommon dental anomaly in all the four permanent first molars. The second case is concerned with endodontic management of a hypertaurodontic mandibular second premolar. The authors wish to highlight the importance of careful radiographic examination in diagnosing this rare dental anomaly in view of the difficulties encountered in performing endodontic treatment.

Relation of salivary inorganic phosphorus and alkaline phosphatase to the dental caries status in children.

The phosphorus concentration and alkaline phosphatase activity in saliva may be related to the susceptibility to dental caries. Thirty children in the age group of 4-6 years were divided into 3 groups. Group 1, children had rampant caries with dfs>10, group 2- dfs>5<10, group 3 caries free with dfs<1. The unstimulated mixed salivary sample was collected from each child and assayed by biochemical methods to determine the phosphorus and alkaline phosphatase concentration in saliva sample. The results showed that higher alkaline phosphatase activity and phosphorus concentration were associated with rampant caries.

Unusual presentation of talon cusp: two case reports.

Talon cusp is an uncommon odontogenic anomaly comprising of an accessory cusp-like structure, usually observed on the palatal surfaces of maxillary incisors. Two uncommon presentations of talon cusp, occurring on a mandibular incisor and on a supernumerary tooth in the maxilla, are reported.

Comparative evaluation of Midazolam and Propofol as intravenous sedative agents in the management of unco-operative children.

Dental treatment of very young children (toddlers) as well as children with highly negative behaviour is known to be difficult. Management of these children requires special skill and at times the support of pharmacological means. A study was planned and carried out to evaluate and compare the efficacy and safety of Propofol and Midazolam as Intravenous sedative agents in the management of uncooperative children belonging to age group 2-5 years, ASA I Category and Frankl's behaviour rating 1 and 2. The results showed both agents to be effective sedative agents, for short pedodontic procedures with minimal side effects.

Papillon Lefevre syndrome: management of a case.

Papillon Lefevre Syndrome is a rare syndrome autosomal recessive in nature, manifesting as keratosis palmoplantaris with periodontitis. A case of Papillon Lefevre Syndrome present in a 12 year old boy is presented. Only the permanent maxillary canines were present in the oral cavity when the patient was first seen, and despite efforts towards preservation, they had to be extracted. (complete dentures were made and the patient was followed up for 26 months.

Multiple supernumerary teeth in the mixed dentition.

Supernumerary or extra teeth result from disturbances during the initiation and proliferation stages of dental development. Teeth formed in excess of the normal number are termed supernumerary teeth. A supernumerary tooth may closely resemble the teeth of the group to which it belongs i.e. molars, premolars or anterior teeth or it may bear little resemblance in size or shape to the teeth with which it is associated. Discussed here are reports of three cases with multiple supernumerary teeth in the mixed dentition and its management.

An epidemiological study on the prevalence of dental caries and treatment need in 12-15 year old children in Bhiwandi (Maharashtra).

An epidemiological survey of the prevalence of dental caries and treatment need in the powerloom township of Bhiwandi revealed a prevalence level of 56.93%. The overall mean DMFT score was 1.25 +/- 1.34. Decayed teeth accounted for the largest component of the reported DMF teeth followed by an almost equal proportion of missing and filled teeth. Single surface restorations were the most frequent type of treatment required, followed by the two or more surface restorations, extractions and pulp therapy.
