Of 20 subjects with profound (90 to 100 dB) hearing loss who underwent a careful hearing aid evaluation, 16 were able to benefit from hearing aid use. With the recommended aids, all subjects could detect speech at levels within the normal conversational range; 75% had some understanding of spondee words; and 56% successfully accomplished tasks in phoneme identification. Two subjects succeeded on a standard speech discrimination test. Ear-level instruments, five binaural, were recommended for 13 of the 16 subjects. Microphones were front-facing in the majority of instances; none were directional. Seven aids used amplitude compression. Subjects were encouraged to relate their subjective impressions, and home trial was an important part of the evaluation. In the majority of instances, lipreading scores were markedly better with hearing aid use than without.

To answer the question whether persons with total postlingual hearing loss can benefit from hearing aid use, hearing aid evaluations were carried out for 18 subjects. Nonstandardized listening tasks were necessitated because none of the subjects could discriminate speech. Subjective considerations played an integral role in the evaluation procedure. The results of the evaluations were as follows: (1) six subjects became new hearing aid users; (2) two retained the aids they were already wearing; (3) one improved when the hearing aid was changed to the opposite ear; (4) one obtained a satisfactory replacement for an inadequate instrument; and (5) eight were unable to use an aid to advantage. Thus, it is important that all persons with total postlingual hearing loss be afforded the opportunity of a careful hearing aid evaluation.

One hundred and eleven patients with rheumatic carditis of the first attack were treated with steroid hormone. In the cases, in which the steroid hormone therapy started within 2 weeks from the onset of the disease, all except one did not reveal a residual valvular heart disease after 2 years from the treatment. It was suggested that early diagnosis and the earliest start of steroid hormone therapy with large dose on rheumatic carditis is necessary for the prevention against development of rheumatic heart disease. A therapeutic schedule for rheumatic fever is recommended.

Over the past few decades, numerous studies have been done on the freeze-drying of biological materials from a physical, chemical and biological point of view. Morphological observation of the freeze-drying process of specimens, however, has been tried by only a few investigators. In those studies, thin-layered aqueous specimens, which were sandwiched between two cover slips, were mostly observed with an optical microscope. For ultrastructural and stereoscopic observation, the scanning electron microscope has a great advantage, unlike that of the optical microscope. A specially designed cryo-scanning electron microscope, employed in the present study, made it possible to observe the freezing patterns of the specimens and also the sublimation process of ice in frozen specimens under vacuum. With this specially designed microscope, shrinkage of some specimens due to dehydration during the freeze-drying process was revealed and the extent of such shrinkage was quantitatively determined.
Vein grafts into I mm vessels were performed with a high success rate, using autografts in rabbits. Failure in most instances was thought to be due to technical errors at operation. The length of the grafts did not alter the patency rate.
