In vivo topical anti-inflammatory and in vitro antioxidant activities of two extracts of Thymus satureioides leaves.

Four extracts at increasing polarity were prepared from the leaves of Thymus satureioides Coss. (Labiatae) and assayed for the in vivo topical anti-inflammatory effect using the croton oil ear test in mice, and for in vitro both antioxidant (DPPH degrees test) and anti-bacterial (broth microdilution method) activities. The chloroform extract showed a topical anti-inflammatory activity (ID50=282 microg cm(-2)), only three times lower than that of the reference drug indomethacin (ID50=93 microg cm(-2)) and its active components were identified as ursolic and oleanolic acids. The methanol extract, showing a significant radical-scavenging effect (SC50=14.54 microg), was characterized by the isolation and identification of some flavonoids. On the contrary, the extracts did not show any anti-bacterial effect against four standard aerobial bacteria strains.

Antibacterial and antifungal activity of essential oils of Mentha suaveolens.

The essential oils (EO) of Mentha suaveolens, a wild Labiatae, which grows in several regions in Morocco, were characterized and their antimicrobial activity assessed. The main aromatic constituents of this plant, as characterized by IR, NMR and MS studies, were pulegone, piperitenone oxide (PEO) and piperitone oxide (PO) occurring in different amounts depending on the subspecies. These constituents as well as a series of other aromatic products such as carvone, limonene and menthone, were tested for their antimicrobial activity against 19 bacteria including Gram-positive and Gram-negative and against three fungi, using solid phase and microtitration assays. Pulegone-rich essential oil inhibited efficiently all the micro-organisms tested with MICs ranging between 0.69 and 2.77 ppm. Among the components from Mentha suaveolens EO, pulegone was the most effective against the tested microorganisms, followed by PEO and PO. The structure-activity relationship is discussed on the basis of the activity of the other aromatic derivatives tested such as carvone, limonene, menthone and the profile of the essential oils of Mentha suaveolens was compared with other Mentha species.

Topical anti-inflammatory activity of extracts and compounds from Thymus broussonettii.

The topical anti-inflammatory activity of four extracts from Thymus broussonetii Boiss (Labiatae) leaves, a herbal drug used in Moroccan traditional medicine, has been studied using the croton oil ear test in mice. A bioassay-oriented fractionation revealed that the pharmacological activity is mainly in the chloroform extract. Fractionation and analysis of this extract allowed the identification of ursolic acid and oleanolic acid as the main anti-inflammatory principles. Some flavonoids (luteolin, eriodictyol, thymonin) and glycosides (luteolin-7-O-glucoside, luteolin-3'-O-glucuronide, eriodictyol-7-O-glucoside) were also isolated from the methanol extract.

Saponins from the roots of Zygophyllum gaetulum and their effects on electrically-stimulated guinea-pig ileum.

A new ursanolide, 3beta-O-alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1->2)-O-alpha-L-arabinopyranosyl-(1->2)-beta-D-glucopyranosyl)oxy]-ursan-20beta,28-olide, zygophyloside N (1), and three known quinovic acid glycosides were isolated from the methanolic extract of the roots of Zygophyllum gaetulum. The crude extract, some fractions and 3-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl quinovic acid 28-beta-D-glucopyranosyl ester, significantly and dose-dependently, are able to reduce the electrically-induced contractions of isolated guinea-pig ileum. The structure of compound (1) was determined, using 1D and 2D NMR techniques.

Phytochemical study of Mentha longifolia of Morocco.

A phytochemical study of Moroccan Mentha longifolia was carried out. The essential oil showed unusual relevant amounts of piperitenone oxide and piperitone oxide, which constitute a new chemotype. From the non-volatile extract, five flavonoids were isolated, among which 5,7,4'-trihydroxy-6,2',3'-trimethoxyflavone (1) is reported for the first time.

Topical anti-inflammatory activity of Thymus willdenowii.

The topical anti-inflammatory activity of Thymus willdenowii Boiss (Labiatae) leaves, a herbal drug used in Moroccan folk medicine, has been studied using the croton oil ear test in mice. A bioassay-oriented fractionation procedure showed that the activity concentrates in the chloroform extract, which has a potency similar to that of indometacin, the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug used as reference (ID50 (dose giving 50% oedema inhibition) = 83 microg cm(-2) and 93 microg cm(-2), respectively). The main compounds responsible for the anti-inflammatory activity of T. willdenowii are ursolic acid and oleanolic acid. The flavonoids luteolin-3'-O-glucuronide and eriodictyol-7-O-glucoside were found for the first time in the genus Thymus.

Saponins from Zygophyllum gaetulum.

Three new bisdesmosidic triterpene saponins, zygophylosides I (1), L (2) and M (3), and three known quinovic acid glycosides were isolated from Zygophyllum gaetulum. The new compounds were determined to be 3 beta-O-alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1-->2)-alpha-L-arabinopyranosyl- (1-->2)-beta-d-glucopyranosylurs-20(21)-en-28-oic acid 28-O-[beta-D-2-O-sulfonylglucopyranosyl] ester (1),3 beta-O- [alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1-->2)-alpha-L-arabinopyranosyl- (1-->2)-beta-D-glucopyranosyl]urs-20(21)-en-28-oic acid 28-O-[beta-D-glucopyranosyl] ester (2), and 3 beta-O-beta-D-quinovopyranosyl-27-nor-olean-12-en-28-oic acid 28-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl ester (3) by use of 1D and 2D NMR techniques.

Quantitative structure-biodegradability relationships (QSBRs) using modified autocorrelation method (MAM).

Quantitative structure-biodegradability relationships (QSBRs) were established for a set of various organic compounds using autocorrelation components as molecular descriptors. The molecules were described by their size (van der Waals volume), electronegativity, hydrogen bonding donor and acceptor ability and lipophilicity (log P). In addition to the established models for alcohols, ketones, and aromatics, we have elaborated a model for both alcohols and ketones (5-day BOD = 0.06 V0 + 1.067 log P - 0.356 (log P)2; n = 29, r = 0.958, s = 0.44, F = 145.6) and another for all the compounds (5-day BOD = 0.065 V0 + 0.748 log P - 0.316 (log P)2; n = 43, r = 0.906, s = 0.575, F = 91.2).

Triterpenoid saponins from Argania spinosa.

Five new oleanane saponins named arganine A, B, D, E and F and two known saponins: arganine C and mi-saponin A were isolated from the kernel of Argania spinosa. The structures of these saponins were elucidated by using 1H NMR, 1H-1H COSY NMR, 13C NMR, FAB mass spectrometry and chemical evidence.
