Activities of the ecto-enzymes 5'-nucleotidase (5'-N) and phosphatase were determined on the surface of intact cells from 15 different established lines of human B- and T-lymphoblasts. Whereas all the lines express phosphatase, 10 of the lines were negative for 5'-N. 5'-N-negative cell lines are found among B as well as T cells, and they do not carry cryptic enzyme activity. In a 5'-N-positive line activity of this enzyme is correlated with growth showing a peak during the logarithmic phase. On the other hand, inhibition of 5'-N does not change the growth curve of this line. Neuraminidase treatment of the cell surface brings about an increase in phosphatase but not in 5'-N activity. 5'-N of two B-cell lines of human peripheral blood lymphocytes shows complete crossreactivity with an antiserum obtained against human placental 5'-N. However, the enzyme of one lymphoma line with B-cell properties (EHR-A-Ramos) does not cross-react with this serum. The results are discussed with respect to suitability of these lymphoblast lines as model systems for the study of immunodeficiencies.

PURPOSE: To prospectively analyze the effectiveness of computed tomography-guided percutaneous lumbar sympathectomy (CTLS) in patients with peripheral arterial occlusive disease in relation to angiographic findings and vascular risk factors. METHODS: Eighty-three patients were treated by CTLS. After clinical evaluation of the risk profile and diagnostic intraarterial digital subtraction arteriography, 14 patients underwent unilateral, and 69 bilateral one-level treatment. Follow-up studies took place on the day following the intervention, after 3 weeks, and after 3 months. RESULTS: A total of 152 interventions were performed in 83 patients. After 3 months, clinical examination of 54 patients (5 patients had died, 24 were lost to follow-up) revealed improvement in 46% (25/54), no change in 39% (21/54), and worsening (amputation) in 15% (8/54). There was no significant statistical correlation among any of the analyzed factors (diabetes mellitus, arterial hypertension, smoking, hyperlipidemia, obesity, hyperuricemia, number of risk factors, ankle-arm index, and angiography score) and the outcome after CTLS. Three major complications occurred: one diabetic patient developed a retroperitoneal abscess 2 weeks after CTLS, and in two other patients ureteral strictures were detected 3 months and 2 years after CTLS, respectively. CONCLUSION: As no predictive criteria for clinical improvement in an individual patient could be identified, CTLS, as a safe procedure, should be employed on a large scale in patients who are unsuitable for treatment by angioplasty or revascularization.
Volumes of the hippocampal formation, external and internal pallidum, caudate, putamen, and nucleus accumbens were measured in both hemispheres of recently collected post-mortem brains of 18 chronically ill schizophrenics and 21 control subjects. In the schizophrenic group, the hippocampal formation and the internal pallidum were significantly smaller in the right and left hemisphere, whereas external pallidum, putamen, caudate and accumbens were not significantly changed. Volumes of the hippocampus and of all evaluated parts of the basal ganglia were in the male schizophrenics more reduced than in the female patients. The right and left hemispheres were equally affected in both sexes. Since the mean brain weight was in patients and controls nearly identical, the volume differences can not be explained by a general brain atrophy or hypoplasia but rather indicate a more focal lack of brain tissue, by which some clinical features of the disease might be explained.
