[Anatomical study on the branches of the celiac trunk (IV). Comparison of the findings with Adachi's classification].

The authors studied the mode of branching of the celiac trunk in 184 Japanese cadavers during dissecting practice at Gifu University from 1985 to 1988. The findings were as follows; 1) One hundred and sixty-six of the 184 cases belonged to Type I of Adachi's classification of variation in the arrangement of the branches of the celiac trunk. One hundred and twenty-nine cases belonged to Group 1, one case to Group 2, 10 cases to Group 3, 9 cases to Group 4, one case to Group 6, 2 cases to Group 7, 8 cases to Group 8 and 4 cases to Group 11. Two cases did not belong to any group. One of them had an anastomosis between the hepatic artery and the superior mesenteric artery. The other one had the middle colic artery arising from the hepatic artery. 2) Seven cases belonged to Type II, Group 12. 3) Two cases belonged to Type III. One belonged to Group 18. The other one had an accessory right hepatic artery arising from the superior mesenteric artery. 4) One case belonged to Type IV, Group 20. 5) Three cases belonged to Type V, Group 23. 6) Two cases belonged to Type VI. One case had a gastrolienal trunk and an accessory right hepatic artery arising from the superior mesenteric artery. The other one had a gastrolienal trunk and an accessory right hepatic artery arising from the gastrolienal trunk. 7) Of the 184 cases, three could not be classified according to Adachi. Two cases had a gastrolienal trunk and the hepatic artery arising from the abdominal aorta. One case had a lienomesenteric trunk and a gastrohepatic trunk.

Ultrastructural study on the effects of hypophysectomy on the golden hamster parathyroid gland.

The ultrastructure of the parathyroid glands of hypophysectomized golden hamsters was studied. In the parathyroid glands of hypophysectomized animals the Golgi complexes and secretory granules were significantly decreased and large vacuolar bodies were significantly increased compared with those of the control animals. In addition, the chief cells contained a few prosecretory granules in the Golgi areas and a few secretory granules were present in the peripheral cytoplasm. These results suggest that the synthesis and release of parathyroid hormone may be suppressed in the parathyroid glands of the hypophysectomized animals.

Effects of melatonin on the ultrastructure of the golden hamster parathyroid gland.

Ultrastructural changes of the parathyroid glands of melatonin-treated golden hamsters were studied. Many chief cells in the parathyroid glands after 1 hour of administration of melatonin contained poorly-developed Golgi complexes associated with a few prosecretory granules and numerous lipid droplets as compared with those of the control animals. The morphology of the parathyroid glands after 5 hours of administration resembled that of the control animals. Many chief cells in the parathyroid glands after 24 hours of administration had well-developed Golgi complexes and cisternae of the granular endoplasmic reticulum, numerous prosecretory granules, a few lipid droplets and many secretory granules in the peripheral cytoplasm as compared with those of the control animals. The ultrastructure of the parathyroid glands after 48 hours of administration was almost similar to that of the control animals. It is considered that melatonin affects the secretory activity of the parathyroid gland.

Ultrastructure of mass of floccular substance in the parathyroid gland of golden hamster.

Mass of floccular substance was observed in the parathyroid glands of fetal, newborn and infantile golden hamsters. Mass composed of floccular substances was spherical with no limiting membrane around it. It was located near the nucleus and the Golgi area, but was also observed in the peripheral cytoplasm. No cell organelles were detected within area of mass.

[A case of the persistent sciatic artery].

During the dissecting practice of students at Gifu University School of Medicine in 1989, a rare developmental anomaly showing the sciatic artery was found in the left lower limb of a cadaver of 88-year-old Japanese female. The left sciatic artery (5 mm in diameter) arose from the internal iliac artery and appeared at the buttock between the piriformis and superior gemellus muscles through foramen infrapiriforme. The femoral artery (6 mm in diameter) of the left lower limb was normal in distribution and belonged to the type III by Adachi's classification (1928). The terminal vessel of the femoral artery was joined to the sciatic artery at the popliteal fossa.

Quantitative analysis of antiatherosclerotic effect of nifedipine in cholesterol-fed rabbits.

Reports concerning the effect of slow calcium-channel blockers on experimental atherosclerosis are controversial. We examined the antiatherosclerotic effect of nifedipine (40 mg/day for 16 weeks) on aorta of rabbits on diets containing 0.3%, 0.5%, and 1.0% cholesterol. There were no significant differences in levels of serum lipids with or without nifedipine in the same cholesterol-fed rabbits. The results obtained show that nifedipine suppressed the extent of lipid deposition and surface involvement (S.I.) in aorta in 0.3% cholesterol-fed rabbits, whereas nifedipine only tended to suppress S.I. in 0.5% cholesterol-fed rabbits and had no effect in 1.0% cholesterol-fed rabbits. The log dose-response relationship of S.I. was obtained by plotting the concentration of cholesterol in the feed or the "integrated value" of the total serum cholesterol (TC), i.e., the cumulative sum of the serum TC values obtained at each week. The log dose-response curve was shifted in parallel with the right in nifedipine groups. The Lineweaver-Burk plot constructed from the dose-response curve had the same points crossing the ordinate with or without nifedipine. These results suggested that nifedipine suppressed S.I. in a competitive manner with cholesterol on the specific binding site of lipid deposition. Electron-microscopic findings also demonstrated that fat droplets in smooth muscle cells, extracellular matrix containing collagen, and elastic fibers decreased in nifedipine-treated rabbits.

[A case of congenital bicuspid pulmonary valve].

The present report describes a case of congenital bicuspid pulmonary valve which was observed in a male Japanese cadaver of 95 years old during dissecting practice at Gifu University in 1990. No evidence of heart failures was found. The semilunar valve on the left side was bigger than that of the right.

Electron microscopic study of the parathyroid gland of the calcium-treated hamster subjected to hypergravity environment.

The ultrastructure of the parathyroid glands of calcium-treated golden hamsters subjected to 5 gravity environment was studied. In the calcium-treated animals exposed to hypergravity environment, the Golgi complexes and cisternae of the granular endoplasmic reticulum were significantly decreased compared with those of the animals exposed to hypergravity environment only and appeared to increase compared with those of the calcium-treated animals, but were almost similar to those of the control animals. In addition, many chief cells contained some prosecretory granules in the Golgi areas, some secretory granules situated close to the plasma membrane and many lysosomes. The morphology of the parathyroid glands in the calcium-treated animals exposed to hypergravity environment resembled that of the control animals. These results suggest that the parathyroid glands suppressed by treatment of calcium and stimulated in response to hypergravity environment may indicate the secretory activity of the parathyroid glands of the control animals.

Effects of pinealectomy on the ultrastructure of the golden hamster parathyroid gland.

Ultrastructural changes of the parathyroid glands of pinealectomized golden hamsters were investigated. The main changes in the parathyroid glands 1 hour and 1 day after pinealectomy compared with the control and sham-operated groups were an increase of the Golgi complexes, cisternae of the granular endoplasmic reticulum and large vacuolar bodies. In addition, many chief cells contained numerous prosecretory granules in the Golgi areas and many secretory granules in the peripheral cytoplasm. The morphology of the parathyroid glands 7 and 30 days after pinealectomy resembled that of the control parathyroid glands. These results suggest that pinealectomy affects the secretory activity of the parathyroid gland.

Effects of hypergravity environment on the parathyroid gland of the isoproterenol-treated hamster.

The ultrastructure of the parathyroid glands of hamsters subjected to 5 g environment after an intraperitoneal injection of isoproterenol was studied. In the isoproterenol-treated hamsters exposed to hypergravity environment, the Golgi complexes, cisternae of the granular endoplasmic reticulum and lipid droplets were significantly increased and secretory granules were significantly decreased compared with those of the control group. In addition, many chief cells contained numerous prosecretory granules in the Golgi areas and several secretory granules were situated close to the plasma membrane of the chief cells. These results suggest that the synthesis and release of parathyroid hormone may be markedly stimulated in the parathyroid glands of the isoproterenol-treated hamsters exposed to hypergravity environment.

Ultrastructure of the parathyroid gland of the mouse fetus after calcium chloride or ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid administration.

Ultrastructural changes of the parathyroid glands of 18-day-old mouse fetuses after administration of calcium chloride (calcium) or ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) were examined. Many chief cells in the parathyroid glans of the calcium-treated mouse fetuses contained poorly developed Golgi complexes and cisternae of the granular endoplasmic reticulum and many secretory granules as compared with those of the control fetuses. Many chief cells in the glands of the EDTA-treated mouse fetuses contained well-developed Golgi complexes and cisternae of the granular endoplasmic reticulum and many prosecretory granules as compared with those of the control fetuses. These findings suggest that calcium or EDTA affects the secretory activity of the parathyroid gland of the mouse fetus.

Effects of hypergravity environment on the parathyroid gland of the propranolol-treated golden hamster.

The fine structure of the parathyroid glands of propranolol-treated hamsters subjected to 5 x gravity environment was studied. In the parathyroid glands of the propranolol-treated hamsters exposed to hypergravity environment, the volume density occupied by the Golgi complexes and cisternae of the granular endoplasmic reticulum was increased as compared to that of propranolol-treated hamsters and was decreased as compared to that of hamsters exposed to a hypergravity environment but was almost similar to that of control hamsters. In addition, many chief cells contained rich free ribosomes, abundant mitochondria and some secretory granules located in the peripheral cytoplasm. These findings suggest that the parathyroid gland which may be suppressed by treatment of propranolol and stimulated in response to a hypergravity environment indicates the secretory activity of the control parathyroid gland.

Effects of isoproterenol treatment on the parathyroid glands in golden hamsters of different ages, with special reference to the frequency of lipid droplets.

The frequency of lipid droplets in the parathyroid glands of young, adult and senile golden hamsters after treatment with isoproterenol was investigated. In the parathyroid glands of the young and senile animals the number of lipid droplets increased gradually by 1 h, and thereafter it remained almost unchanged at 3 h after administration. In the glands of adult animals it increased, at first rapidly and then gradually, by 3 h after administration. It is considered that in the parathyroid glands of the golden hamsters stimulated by isoproterenol there is a relationship between the number of lipid droplets and aging.

[The anatomical study on the branches of the femoral artery (II). Comparison with the findings of Adachi's classification].

The authors studied the mode of three main branches of the femoral artery (deep femoral, medial circumflex femoral and lateral circumflex femoral artery) in 179 Japanese cadavers during dissecting practice at Gifu University in the last four years. The findings were as follows; Two hundred and seventeen sides in the 352 sides (61.7%) belong to Type I of Adachi's classification on variations in the arrangement of the branches of the femoral artery. Forty-one sides (11.6%) belong to Type II, 55 sides (15.6%) to Type III, 7 sides (2.0%) to Type IV, 8 sides (2.3%) to Type V, 4 sides (1.1%) to Type VI, 5 sides (1.4%) to Type VII and 15 dises (4.3%) to other types. Five cases in 15 sides which belong to other types have been reported in our previous study (Emura et al. 1985). In 3 cases out of 10 sides the deep femoral-medial circumflex femoral trunk, and the ascending and descending branches of the lateral circumflex femoral artery arise from the femoral artery, respectively. In one case out of 10 sides the deep femoral-lateral circumflex femoral trunk and the medial circumflex femoral-inferior epigastric-obturator trunk arise from the femoral artery, respectively. In one case out of 10 sides the lateral circumflex femoral artery and the deep femoral-medial circumflex femoral-inferior epigastric-obturator trunk arise from the femoral artery, respectively. In one case out of 10 sides the medial circumflex femoral-deep circumflex iliac trunk arises from the lateral side of the femoral artery and runs medially behind the femoral artery, and the deep femoral-lateral circumflex femoral trunk arises from the femoral artery. In one case out of 10 sides the deep femoral-ascending (the lateral circumflex femoral artery) trunk, the medial circumflex femoral artery and the deep circumflex iliac-descending (the lateral circumflex femoral artery) trunk arise from the femoral artery, respectively. In one case out of 10 sides the deep femoral-descending (the lateral circumflex femoral artery) trunk, the medial circumflex femoral artery and the ascending branch of the lateral circumflex femoral artery) trunk, the medial circumflex femoral artery and the ascending branch of the lateral circumflex femoral artery arise from the femoral artery, respectively.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)
