Radiographic study of alveolar bone height related to tooth and root length.

In radiographs from 76 randomly selected periodontally healthy subjects, aged 18-22 yr, at the School of Dentistry in Stockholm, the alveolar bone height was evaluated and correlated to the root length as well as to the entire tooth length. The root lengths were also related to the entire tooth lengths. The mean tooth length was found to be 24.9 mm and the mean root length 65.7% of the mean tooth length. The correlation of alveolar bone height to the root length varied between 91.5% and 96.3% and the correlation to the entire tooth length between 54.0 and 65.7%.

Alveolar bone height in professional musicians.

This study aimed at determining alveolar bone height in musicians playing wind instruments and non-wind instruments. Two hundred and forty-two subjects, 208 men and 34 women, from 3 national orchestras in Stockholm were examined in an intraoral full-mouth survey. The height of alveolar bone, registered by a computerized method, was expressed as a percentage of the root length. Mean alveolar bone height varied from 87.4% in subjects aged 21-30 years to 73.6% in subjects aged 51-60 years. There were no significant differences between the two categories of instrumentalists in any age group. With regard to individual teeth, the greatest values of bone height were observed for canines and second premolars, whereas mandibular incisors and maxillary molars displayed the lowest values. The alveolar bone height was not significantly different for the two categories of instrumentalists in either anterior teeth or posterior teeth. It is concluded that playing wind instruments does not influence the alveolar bone height to such an extent as to be detectable on a large-scale epidemiologic basis.

Dental care habits, oral hygiene, and gingival health in Swedish professional musicians.

The investigation covered 250 professional musicians employed in 3 leading national orchestras in Stockholm, Sweden. The aims were to describe dental care habits, such as frequency of dental visits and frequency and methods of oral hygiene, and to relate these habits to oral cleanliness and gingival health in wind and non-wind instrument musicians. The results showed that 81.2% visited their dentist at least once a year and that 82.8% had had such a regular habit for the past 5 years or more. All subjects claimed to brush their teeth daily, and 66.0% used supplementary oral hygiene aids. The clinical examination showed that oral cleanliness and gingival health were of good standard. Mean plaque index was 0.9 and mean gingival index 1.2. Both measures increased with age and were closely correlated (r = 0.80). The relationships between the dental care habits studied and the clinical conditions with regard to oral cleanliness or gingival health were rather weak, although trends towards better gingival condition and oral cleanliness were observed with increasing frequency of toothbrushing. The results indicate a high degree of dental conscientiousness in professional musicians. No differences were observed between wind and non-wind instrument musicians.

Absorbed doses at varying tube voltage in lateral cephalography.

Absorbed doses in organs of special interest from lateral cephalography were measured by thermoluminescence dosimetry in a tissue equivalent phantom head. The radiographic examination was performed in a standardized manner by using a carefully collimated radiation field and a near-focus dodger. The actual tube voltages ranged from 63-127 kVp. The absorbed dose was described as a function of tube voltage. In all measurement sites the absorbed dose decreased with increasing tube voltage. This reduction was most obvious in the low tube voltage range. From the results a lowest recommendable tube voltage was given for the different measurement sites varying from approximately 75 kVp (thyroid region) to approximately 100 kVp (parotid region). A high tube voltage was found to be important for a low absorbed dose in different organs in lateral cephalography.

Dental health in professional musicians. A radiographic study in dental conscious subjects.

A study has been performed covering the oral health of 247 professional musicians in Stockholm aged 21-60 yr. In an earlier study the oral hygiene was found to be of a high standard. The following part of this study concerned dental health i.e. remaining and intact teeth, decayed and filled proximal surfaces. All registrations were made on intraoral full mouth surveys. The number of remaining teeth was large, but decreased with age. In the 51-60 age group, 24.1 teeth remained on average. The number of teeth intact ranged from 55-28% of remaining teeth in the youngest and oldest age group respectively. A total of 555 caries lesions were registered on proximal surfaces, 49.1% being primary lesions in the enamel, 21.4% primary lesions into the dentin and 29.5% secondary lesions. Only 3.3% of all filled surfaces showed secondary lesions. The number of secondary lesions increased with age. A total of 30.9% of the subjects showed no proximal lesions. It was concluded that in adults who have adopted proper oral hygiene it is possible to preserve a large number of teeth and to limit the deterioration caused by caries.

Periapical condensing osteitis and endodontic treatment.

Forty-nine roots of thirty-six teeth with the diagnosis of condensing osteitis were followed up by means of radiographs and patient files after endodontic treatment. The mean observation period was 4.3 years. Prior to endodontic treatment the periodontal membrane was widened on thirty-eight roots but on follow-up only on twelve. The periapical condensing osteitis showed total regression on thirty-six of the forty-nine roots. No condensing osteitis showed progress. The results show rebuilding of bone structures to normal appearance after endodontic treatment of periapical condensing osteitis.

A follow-up study of screwpost-retained amalgam crowns.

A follow-up study of amalgam crowns retained with brass screwposts (Dentatus) has been performed. The teeth had been restored by undergraduates at the Department of Cariology, School of Dentistry, Stockholm, during the years 1970-1976. Radiographs of the teeth made at the time of insertion of posts were available in all cases. The material comprised 56 teeth with altogether 69 screwposts. Average observation time was 7.8 years. Anamnestic data were collected and clinical and radiographic investigations of the restored teeth and surrounding tissues were carried out. Of the 56 teeth, 8 teeth containing altogether 11 screwposts had been lost by extraction. Annotations from the treating dentists were available in all cases and showed that five of the extractions had been necessary because of extensive caries, one because of parodontitis and two because of root fractures. No corrosion of screwposts had been observed in the fractured teeth. The anamnestic investigation revealed sporadic tenderness and metallic taste in only a few cases. The most frequent clinical findings were discoloration and pitting of amalgam surfaces and discoloration of tooth substance and gingiva. The discolorations of the gingiva were related to restorations extending below the gingival margin. No clinical or radiographic signs of corrosion of screwposts were found in the investigated teeth.

Radiation absorbed doses in cephalography.

Radiation absorbed doses to different organs in the head and neck region in lateral (LAT) and postero-anterior (PA) cephalography were investigated. The doses were measured by thermoluminescence dosimeters (TLD) on a tissue equivalent phantom head. Lanthanide screens in speed group 4 were used at 90 and 85 kVp. A near-focus aluminium dodger was used and the radiation beam was collimated strictly to the face. The maximum entrance dose from LAT was 0.25 mGy and 0.42 mGy from a PA exposure. The doses to the salivary glands ranged between 0.2 and 0.02 mGy at LAT and between 0.15 and 0.04 mGy at PA exposures. The average thyroid gland dose without any shielding was 0.11 mGy (LAT) and 0.06 mGy (PA). When a dodger was used the dose was reduced to 0.07 mGy (LAT). If the thyroid gland was shielded off, the dose was further reduced to 0.01 mGy and if the thyroid region was collimated out of the primary radiation field the dose was reduced to only 0.005 mGy.

Changes in tooth length on radiographs after crown therapy.

Altogether 155 crowned teeth--incisors, canines, premolars and molars in both jaws--have been studied by means of radiographs regarding tooth length before and after crown therapy. The results show that the correlation in tooth length is good. The mean differences, however, vary between -0.52 mm for the upper molars and 0.44 mm for the upper incisors. The best correlation in tooth length was found for the upper premolars and the lower incisors.

Long-term evaluation of autotransplanted maxillary canines with completed root formation.

Autotransplantation of 33 maxillary canines was followed up in 29 patients with an average age of 27.5 years. The mean follow-up period was 6.0 years. Endodontic treatment was performed in 23 teeth. Signs of root resorption were found in an increasing number of canines during the follow-up period. At the last examination eight canines showed no signs of resorption. External and internal resorption of inflammatory type were the most frequent forms of resorption and were also found to be the most hazardous factors for the prognosis of the transplanted tooth. Extraction of the transplant was necessary in four cases because of root resorption or poor bone regeneration.

Image distortion in rotational panoramic radiography. II. Vertical distances.

Films, exposed with rotational panoramic radiography, are generally considered inferior regarding the accuracy of measurements. Theoretic mathematical calculations, confirmed by an experimental test, have been performed in order to evaluate the reliability of measurements of distances that appear vertical in the image. It is demonstrated that, within certain limits, the panoramic film may be used for vertical measurements in clinical practice provided the patient has been properly positioned in the equipment during the exposure.
