Sevoflurane and propofol decrease intraocular pressure equally during non-ophthalmic surgery and recovery.

BACKGROUND: To provide good control of intraocular pressure (IOP) during anaesthesia and surgery, we conducted a study comparing the effects on IOP during maintenance and recovery of sevoflurane vs propofol anaesthesia in 33 patients (ASA I-II) undergoing elective non- ophthalmic surgery. METHODS: Anaesthesia was induced with propofol 2 mg kg(-1), fentanyl 2 micro g kg(-1) and vecuronium 0.1 mg kg(-1). Patients were allocated randomly to receive either propofol 4-8 mg kg(-1) h(-1) (group P; n=16) or 1.5-2.5 vol% sevoflurane (group S; n=17) for maintenance of anaesthesia. Fentanyl 2-4 micro g kg(-1) was added if necessary. The lungs were ventilated with 50% air in oxygen. Blood pressure, heart rate, oxygen saturation and end-tidal carbon dioxide were measured before and throughout anaesthesia and in the recovery room. IOP was determined with applanation tonometry (Perkins) by one ophthalmologist blinded to the anaesthetic technique. RESULTS: There was a significant decrease in IOP after induction and during maintenance of anaesthesia in both groups. No significant differences in IOP between the two groups was found. CONCLUSION: Sevoflurane maintains the IOP at an equally reduced level compared with propofol.

A longitudinal study of negative affect and self-perceived competence in young adolescents.

In a 4-wave, 2-year longitudinal design, the authors obtained measures of negative affect (NA) and self-perceived competence from 220 boys and 216 girls who were 7th graders at the beginning of this study. NA was operationalized as the common dimension underlying self-reports of depressive symptoms, anxiety symptoms, and negative emotions. Self-perceived competence consisted of 2 higher order constructs: a well-behaved/good-student factor and an attractive/athletic/popular factor. Structural equation modeling revealed very high stability estimates for all constructs. Nevertheless, self-perceived competence in the attractive/athletic/popular domain predicted changes in NA. Conversely, NA predicted changes in self-perceived competence in the well-behaved/good-student domain. The primacy of NA versus self-cognitions depends, in part, on the type of self-cognitions being examined.

[Arachidonic acid in the liver, ovary and uterus of cows with various reproductive capability].

Research was carried out at two localities ecologically different, i.e. in the "relatively" clean region of Klatovy, designed according to the standards of the Czech Ministry of Environment as a region with above-average quality environment and in the considerably affected region of Prague-East, designed as a region with below-average quality environment. The first group included 33 cows from herds with good fertility (average conception rate after 1st insemination 61.5 and service period 88 days) and the dairy cows were eliminated for reasons different as reproductive disorders (Klatovy), in the second group all 18 cows were eliminated because of reproductive disorders (Prague-East) and they were from the herds with much lower fertility (average conception rate after 1st insemination 46.9% and service period 107 days). Samples of liver, uterus and ovarian tissues of the cows were processed according to the method after Jarý et al. (1987), analysed on the gas chromatograph Varian--Aerogramm 2100. The data obtained were processed on a computer IBM PC--AT with a numeric co-processor, and the programme Quatro Pro, version 2.0 was used. Differences in average amounts measured in both regions are objectively characterized in Figs. 1, 2 (with marked scatterings) and correspond to the amount given in Tab. I. As regards the saturated acid, stearic acid and oleic acid, no remarkable differences were found according to the localities (Klatovy and Prague), with the exception of the average contents of those acids in uterine horns.
