An epidemic of dengue fever broke out in Calcutta between July and August 1983. Persons of all age groups were affected with a preponderance of young adults. Haemorrhagic manifestations and shock were not observed. Virus was isolated from 4 acute phase sera and identified as dengue type 3 (DEN-3), the first isolation of DEN-3 virus in Calcutta. Serotesting with 9 paired blood samples established dengue infection in 7 and a flavivirus group reaction in 2. Examination of 36 single sera revealed presumptive dengue infection in 15 and a flavivirus group reaction in 17, while the remaining 4 were negative to all flavivirus antigens.
Using a computer model of a realistically shaped human torso with lungs and intraventricular blood masses, we have assessed how torso geometry and composition affect the extracorporal magnetic field produced by a current dipole in the centre of the ventricular mass. The magnetic induction vector B arising from the dipole has been calculated at points of a precordial measuring grid and the influence of boundaries has been assessed qualitatively, by comparing contour maps of the B component normal to the torso's frontal plane. We found that the maps reflected relatively faithfully the underlying dipolar source for the homogeneous torso and even for the torso with lungs. However, the intraventricular blood masses caused a noticeable rotation of the maps' extrema. Both lungs and blood masses tended to swing the distribution towards the distribution that would have been caused by a dipole oriented along the anatomical axis of the heart.
The effect of 6 weekly injections of ochratoxin A (5 mg/kg) and citrinin (20 mg/kg) on the following hematological indices of mice was studied: erythrocyte sedimentation rate, hematocrit percentage, mean corpuscular values, red cell indices, platelet count, total count of bone marrow cells, differential count of bone marrow cells, total count of splenic cells, spleen weight, and serum calcium. These mycotoxins resulted in a significant decrease in platelet count and hematocrit values. On the other hand, they increased erythrocyte sedimentation rate, mean corpuscular values and red cell indices. Weight of the spleen and the splenic cell count decreased significantly in ochratoxin A and citrinin treated mice. Total count of bone marrow cells, erythrocyte precursors, leucocyte precursors and megakaryocyte precursors of femoral bone marrow decreased significantly in toxin treated mice. Calcium concentration in the serum of toxin treated mice also was decreased significantly.

To obtain general rules of peptide design using alpha, beta-dehydro-residues, a sequence with two consecutive delta Phe-residues, Boc-L-Val-delta Phe-delta Phe-L-Ala-OCH3, was synthesized by azlactone method in solution phase. The peptide was crystallized form its solution in an acetone/water mixture (70:30) in space group P6(1) with a = b = 14.912(3) A, c = 25.548(5) A, V = 4912.0(6) A3. The structure was determined by direct methods and refined by a full matrix least-squares procedure to an R value of 0.079 for 2891 observed [I > or = 3 delta (1)] reflections. The backbone torsion angles phi 1 = 54(1) degrees, psi 1 = 129(1) degrees, omega 1 = -177(1) degrees, phi 2 = 57(1) degrees, psi 2 = 15(1) degrees, omega 2 = -170(1) degrees, phi 3 = 80(1) degrees, psi 3 = 7(2) degrees, omega 3 = -177(1) degrees, phi 4 = -108(1) degrees and psi T4 = -34(1) degrees suggest that the peptide adopts a folded conformation with two overlapping beta-turns of types II and III'. These turns are stabilized by two intramolecular hydrogen bonds between the CO of the Boc group and the NH of delta Phe3 and the CO of Val1 and the NH of Ala4. The torsion angles of delta Phe2 and delta Phe3 side chains are similar and indicate that the two delta Phe residues are essentially planar. The folded molecules from head-to-tail intermolecular hydrogen bonds giving rise to continuous helical columns which run parallel to the c-axis. This structure established the formation of two beta-turns of types II and III' respectively for sequences containing two consecutive delta Phe residues at (i + 2) and (i + 3) positions with a branched beta-carbon residue at one end of the tetrapeptide.

OBJECTIVES: To determine: *rate of isolation of Moraxella catarrhalis in elderly patients having lower respiratory tract infection *The antibiotic susceptibility pattern of Moraxella catarrhalis isolates. *The predisposing factors responsible for Moraxella catarrhalis infections of lower respiratory tract. MATERIAL AND METHOD: This is a prospective study carried out at Manipal Teaching Hospital, Pokhara during May 2002 to April 2003. A total of 716 sputum samples collected from patients with suspected lower respiratory tract infection were investigated. The samples were subjected to Gram stain, culture and sensitivity. Sputum samples were inoculated on blood and chocolate agar and incubated at 37 degrees C for 18 to 24 hours in candle jar containing 3-5% Co2. For the identification of bacterial isolates, the cultural and colonial characteristics were recorded and identified with the use of biochemical test. The susceptibility of bacterial isolates to antimicrobial agent was performed following Kirby-Bauer method. RESULT: Out of the 716 samples, 355 (49.58%) grew normal commensals of the upper respiratory tract. Respiratory pathogens were recovered from 361 (50.41%) samples. The most common respiratory pathogen was H. influenzae (26. 86%), followed by S. pneumoniae (21.16%). Moraxella catarrhalis accounted for 6.90%. Rate of isolation of Moraxella catarrhalis was higher in males than in females. Out of 25 isolates 16 were from males and 9 were from females. Frequency of isolation of Moraxella catarrhalis was more frequently seen in age group 61-70 years. It was most commonly recovered in winter. The most effective antibiotics were amoxicillin-clavulanate and ceftriaxone and least was ampicillin. CONCLUSION: Moraxella catarrhalis isolation from sputum especially in persons above 60 years of age and in the absence of other well established pathogens should not be disregarded as they can cause lower respiratory tract infection in these individuals.
A program is described that provides for transition into a relatively unstructured supervised independent-living program for adolescents with a history of behavioral and emotional disturbance, often including delinquency and/or psychiatric hospitalization. Contracts used to define expectations, logistics, and conflicts experienced by the youths are discussed. Developmental issues are highlighted, focusing on the rapprochement subphase.
