Exhaustive bicycle ergometric exercise in 20 untrained male and female medical students in the age group of 18-25 yrs resulted in significant changes in clotting and prothrombin time, platelet adhesiveness and fibrinolytic activity. Clotting and Prothrombin time were reduced while platelet adhesiveness and fibrinolytic activity were increased in both the sexes.

The response of the coagulation-fibrinolysis system to venous occlusion was studied in 20 healthy subjects of both sexes. All of them showed increased fibrinolytic activity, the increase being greater in females. Fibrinogen content also increased in both sexes. The other parameters of coagulation studied showed varied responses.
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Despite several advantages to the use of epidural analgesia for the management of labor pain in preeclamptic parturients, this procedure is withheld from many such patients owing to associated thrombocytopenia and platelet dysfunction. METHODS: A preeclamptic parturient with mild thrombocytopenia and platelet dysfunction manifested by a prolonged bleeding time received intravenous DDAVP (0.3 microgram/kg) in an attempt to correct her coagulation abnormality. RESULTS: The patient's bleeding time was normalized with DDAVP administration, allowing her to receive epidural analgesia. CONCLUSIONS: Preeclampsia-induced platelet dysfunction might be corrected with DDAVP: A controlled study is required before its routine use can be advocated.

Intestinal epithelial cells migrating across a mucosal defect are generally described as dedifferentiated, a term that suggests a loss of regulatory biology. Since cell biology may be more readily studied in established cell lines than in vivo, a model is developed using the human Caco-2 intestinal epithelial cell migrating across matrix proteins. This resembles in vivo models of mucosal healing in its sheet migration and loss of the brush border enzymes, which are conventional markers for intestinal epithelial differentiation. Immunohistochemical studies of migrating Caco-2 cells suggest, however, that the rearrangements of cytoskeletal, cell-cell and cell-matrix proteins during migration are not random but seem adapted to the migratory state. Indeed, Caco-2 migration may be substantially regulated by a variety of physiologic and pharmacologic stimuli and differentiation, measured by the specific activity of the intestinal epithelial brush border enzymes alkaline phosphatase and dipeptidyl dipeptidase, may be independently pharmacologically programmed during the stimulation or inhibition of cell motility.
