Studies on osteoporosis IV. Effect of benzo[b]thiophene-2- and dibenzothiophene-4-carboxylic acid on heparin accelerated osteoporosis.

Total skeletal calcium was determined in female mice with the aid of whole body neutron activation analysis. Three months treatment with heaprin produced significant osteoporosis in C3-H/St(Ha) mice but not in C57/BL6(J) mice. This was more pronounced in the younger (5-8 months) than in the older (15-18 months) animals. Two 2-thiophene carboxylic acid derivatives showed significant osteoporosis preventive activity.

Office termination of pregnancy by "menstrual aspiration".

A program of office menstrual aspiration was initiated in our institution in 1972. Since that time 1,443 patients have been admitted into the study. These patients were evaluated by age, marital status, gravidity, repeat pregnancy terminations, complications, and detailed tissue analysis as well as contraception utilized at the time of conception and following counseling after the procedure. A majority of these patients were less than 25 years old and single; 28% had had a previous termination and 51% a previous pregnancy. Pathologic evaluations revealed Arias-Stella reaction in 78%. When these data were compared to those of a similar group of women whose pregnancies were terminated in the hospital by suction curettage, it was found that the office procedure is comparatively safe and should therefore be the therapy of choice.

Suicide--a retrospective study in a culturally distinct community in India.

Occurrence and features of 130 suicide cases were studied in a culturally distinct community, Goa (India), which was isolated from mainland for over 450 years records obtained from the police and information collected from close relatives of the deceased were analyzed retrospectively. It was noted that cultural and religious factors continue to play an important role in suicidal behaviour in India. The rate was higher for males as compared with females and was greater in joint family than in nuclear family. Similarly, married persons of both sexes had a higher frequency. Ethnically the rate among Hindus was higher than among Christians. Mental illness constituted a major cause of suicide, followed by domestic conflicts. An interesting feature observed in the study was that more persons commit suicide in their own birth place and near their own homes.

Partial purification and properties of an antibacterial product of peritoneal exudate cell cultures from BCG-infected guinea pigs.

Peritoneal exudates elicited in BCG-infected guinea pigs with caseinate yield cell cultures that have been shown to produce soluble material capable of sterilizing certain bacteria if the cultures are incubated with the specific antigen purified protein derivative or the lectin phytohemagglutinin. This material is now shown to have the following properties: (i) strongly adsorbable to glass; (ii) strongly adsorbable to cation- and not to anion-exchange resins but not elutable with mineral acid or solutions of high ionic strength; (iii) strongly adsorbable to cellulose nitrate membrane filter materials and quantitatively elutable with dilute HCl, providing a convenient method for partial purification; (iv) relatively stable over a wide range of pH and temperature; (v) antagonized by polyanions and by iron ions; (vi) active against the three gram-positive bacilli tested and not against the other organisms tested: (vii) more active in alkaline than in acidic media; and (viii) inactivated by proteolytic enzymes.

Antibacterial product of peritoneal exudate cell cultures from guinea pigs infected with mycobacteria, listeriae, and rickettsiae.

In an in vitro model of cellular immunity, the antibacterial product of immunologically mediated mononuclear cell activation was studied from guinea pigs infected with listeriae and rickettsiae and compared with the product previously described from animals infected with mycobacteria. We found that this product, active against gram-positive bacilli, appeared to be identical in the three different infections with regard to its heat stability, its chromatographic adsorption and elution pattern, its susceptibility to inactivation by proteolytic enzymes, and its antibacterial spectrum

The influence of acupuncture stimulation during pregnancy: the induction and inhibition of labor.

Uterine response to electroacupuncture stimulation of specific sites of the extremities is demonstrated in 60 pregnant women--48 cases for labor induction and 12 cases for inhibition of premature labor. In the 34 term, post-term, and 7 intrauterine fetal death cases, induction of labor was attempted; in 32 cases delivery was achieved, resulting in a success rate of 78%. In 7 cases of midterm abortion attempts, all failed to respond. Of the 12 cases of premature labor, with the exception of 1 case, all carried the pregnancy to term, resulting in a success rate of 91.6%. Based on these clinical observations, electroacupuncture may become a useful tool in controlling labor. The possible mechanism of action is discussed. Further investigation and standardization of this technique is proposed.

Cross-cultural differences in simple taste preferences.

A population of Indian laborers who show high preferences for sour and bitter tastes has been studied. Their judgments of taste intensity and pleasantness of sweet and salty stimuli are in accord with European population estimates, which suggests that dietary history may alter preferences for simple taste stimuli without affecting the gustatory system.

Induction of term labor with intravenous prostaglandin F2alpha (a comparison of two dosage schedules).

The efficacy of intravenous Prostaglandin F2alpha (PGF2alpha) infusion for induction of labor in two different dosage schedules was studied in 90 women between 36 and 43 weeks of gestation. The rate of PGF2alpha infusion was increased at four-hour intervals in 36 women in the low dosage group and every hour in 54 women in the high dosage group, never exceeding an infusion rate of 20 mug/min. in either group. Labor was successfully induced in approximately 90% of the patients in each group. There was no statistically significant difference in the mean induction-delivery interval between the two groups at the 5 percent level. Intravenous PGF2alpha was found to be effective and safe for both mother and infant in the dosage schedules used in this study for induction of labor.
