[An analysis of causes of acute poisoning in Poland during 1989-1990].

An analysis was carried out of the structure of acute poisonings, by various toxic agents and preparations, during the period 1989-1990, based on the data from regional centres of clinica toxicology. According to these data, suicidal attempts were the most frequent cause of poisonings. The prevailing agents of the poisonings included drugs, primarily sleep-inducing and psychotropic. Alcohols were placed secondly and the third place agents included gases, organic solvents, pesticides and mushrooms.

The effect of subchronic exposure to the rubber vulcanization fumes on guinea pig lungs.

The influence of 28 days' inhalatory exposure to rubber vulcanization fumes at a concentration of 100 mg/m3 on guinea pigs' lung morphology was investigated. Focal infiltrations of pulmonary parenchyma with lymphocytes, neutrophilic and eosinophilic granulocytes and macrophages were observed. Lymphatic tissue concentrations having the typical appearance of solitary lymphatic nodules were also seen. The use of the double sequential Alcian blue/safranin O staining method for the identification of the mast cells [MCs] revealed that only Alcian-blue-positive MCs were observed, regardless of the region of the lungs examined, both in control and exposed guinea pigs. No safranin-0-positive MCs were seen. However, the MCs number increased from 1934 +/- 91 cells/mm3 tissue in controls to a statistically significant (p less than 0.05) 2486 +/- 89 cells/mm3 tissue in exposed guinea pig lungs. It was accompanied by histamine content increase from 1.50 +/- 0.06 micrograms/g wet tissue weight and 2.45 +/- 0.18 micrograms/g wet tissue weight, respectively. The distribution of the lung MCs varied, showing a statistically significant (p less than 0.05) increase in their number in the intraalveolar septa: from 957 +/- 53 to 1369 +/- 74 cells/mm3 tissue and in the peribronchial and peribronchiolar spaces: from 204 +/- 36 to 359 +/- 42 cells/mm3 tissue.

[A chromatographic method of determining the levels of organic solvents in the air, the components of the offset lacquer LO-2].

A gas chromatographic method was worked out to determine the mixture of ethyl acetate, toluene, buthyl acetate, p,m-xylene, o-xylene and ethyl ethylene glycol vapours. These solvents are used as some components of offset lacquer LO-2. Optimum separation conditions were achieved on 3-metre SS column filled with 10% FFAP on Chormosorb W AW DMCS 80-100 mesh. Air samples were collected on activated charcoal placed in glass tubes. The components tested were desorbed from the sorbent material by 10% acetone solution in CS2. The method enables to determine the concentrations of each compound, corresponding to one fifth of their TLVs.

[Decrease in the respiration rate in mice as an indicator of the irritating effects of chemical substances on the upper respiratory tract].

A method of measuring a decrease in the respiration rate as an index of chemical substances irritating effects upon mice's upper respiratory tract has been checked and adopted. A dose of irritating substances resulting in the respiration rate decrease by 50%--RD50 has been determined, as related to exposure to chlorine, ammonia and acrolein. The RD50 values for chlorine and acrolein approximated those quoted by Alarie Y., whereas for ammonia exposure this value differed.

[Gas chromatographic determination of acetic acid esters in the air].

A gas chromatographic method for determination of methyl acetate, ethyl acetate, propyl acetate, butyl acetate and amyl acetate has been elaborated. The best separation of determined compounds has been achieved on a column containing 10% Carbowax 20 M on Chromosorb W AW DMCS. Air samples are collected by passing the examined air through charcoal tubes and consequent desorption of adsorbed compounds with carbon disulfide. Activated charcoal used in all tests has been found to adsorb 10%, by weight, of acetic acid esters.

[Gas chromatographic method for the determination of P-chlorphenol in the air].

The gas chromatographic method for determination of p-chlorophenol in the air in presence of phenol has been elaborated. A good separation of investigated compounds was achieved using 10% FFAP on Chromosorb W as a stationary phase. Air was sampled to water solution of sodium carbonate. The method enables determination of 0.25 mg/m3 of p-chlorophenol, and 2.5 mg/m3 of phenol at the air sample volume 10 dm3.

[Gas chromatography determination of trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene in the air].

Parameters of gas chromatographic separation and determination of trichloroethylene and tetrachlorethylene have been elaborated. The best separation has been achieved on column containing 7% OV-17 on Chromosorb W AW DMCS. For air samples collection, a method of absorption on charcoal and consequent desorption with carbon disulfide has been adapted. Stability of concentration of determined compounds in gas pipettes has been also evaluated. The investigations proved the concentration of compounds in gas pipettes to decrease in time. The magnitude of decrease was dependent on initial concentration and the boiling points of the compounds.
