Processing of instruments has become complex. OR nurses are sometimes assigned this responsibility without having proper knowledge and understanding of processing procedures. Formal continuing education programs and continuous quality reviews must be carried out to ensure appropriate processing of OR equipment.

Prevention of intravascular infections ways and means.

IV therapy is a risk factor for nosocomial bacteremia; using the principle of asepsis can reduce this risk. These principles include appropriate handwashing, using sterile barriers during insertion of central lines, disinfection of ports before entry, and appropriate dressing changes. Assessing the risk of new technologies and methods to prevent infection also is important.

Developing a research culture in education and practice.

In 1996, the English National Board held discussions with five focus groups of nursing and midwifery lectures with an interest in or responsibility for the development of research. The purpose of the groups was to explore the experiences of lecturers in colleges which had recently integrated with higher education institutions. The focus groups were asked particularly about their experiences in developing research expertise to meet their professional and academic needs, the demands of the research assessment exercise (RAE) and the NHS research and development (R&D) agenda.
