Search for leptoquark pairs decaying into nunu+jets in pp collisions at square root[s] = 1.8 TeV.

We present the results of a search for leptoquark (LQ) pairs in (85.2+/-3.7) pb(-1) of pp* collider data collected by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron. We observe no evidence for leptoquark production and set a limit on sigma(pp*-->LQLQ-->nunu+jets) as a function of the mass of the leptoquark (m(LQ)). Assuming the decay LQ-->nuq, we exclude scalar leptoquarks for m(LQ) < 98 GeV/c(2), and vector leptoquarks for m(LQ) < 200 GeV/c(2) and coupling which produces the minimum cross section, at a 95% confidence level.

Search for the scalar top quark in pp collisions at square root[s] = 1.8 TeV.

We have performed a search for scalar top quark (stop) pair production in the inclusive electron-muon-missing transverse energy final state, using a sample of pp events corresponding to 108.3 pb(-1) of data collected with the D0 detector at Fermilab. The search is done in the framework of the minimal supersymmetric standard model assuming that the sneutrino is the lightest supersymmetric particle. For the dominant decays of the lightest stop, t-->b chi+1 and t-->blnu, no evidence for signal is found. We derive cross-section limits as a function of stop ( t ), chargino ( chi+1), and sneutrino ( nu) masses.

Inability to control anger or aggression after stroke.

Using the 10-item Spielberger Trait Anger Scale, the authors interviewed 145 patients with stroke regarding inability to control anger or aggression (ICAA). Poststroke depression and emotional incontinence were also assessed. ICAA was present in 47 patients (32%) and was closely related to motor dysfunction, dysarthria, emotional incontinence, and lesions affecting frontal-lenticulocapsular-pontine base areas. ICAA seems to be one of the major behavioral symptoms in patients with stroke.

Direct search for charged higgs bosons in decays of top quarks.

We present a search for charged Higgs bosons in decays of pair-produced top quarks in pp collisions at sqrt[s] = 1.8 TeV recorded by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. With no evidence for signal, we exclude most regions of the ( M(H+/-),tan(beta)) parameter space where the decay t--> H(+)b has a branching fraction >0.36 and B(H+/--->tau(nu)(tau)) is large.

Aloesin inhibits hyperpigmentation induced by UV radiation.

Skin hyperpigmentation is caused by the overproduction of melanin pigment, which is synthesized by the action of tyrosinase. We recently reported that aloesin inhibits tyrosinase activity. The present study was undertaken to test the inhibitory effect of aloesin on pigmentation in human skin after UV radiation. Experimental subjects were UV-irradiated (210 mJ) on the inner forearm. UV-irradiated regions were assigned to four groups: vehicle control, aloesin treated, arbutin treated, and aloesin and arbutin treated. Aloesin and/or arbutin were administered four times a day for 15 days. Aloesin treatment suppressed pigmentation by 34%, arbutin by 43.5%, and the cotreatment by 63.3% compared with the control (n = 15; P < 0.05). Moreover, aloesin treatment showed pigmentation suppression in a dose-dependent manner (n = 7; P < 0.05). These results raise the possibility that aloesin may be used as an agent that inhibits melanin formation induced by UV radiation.

Blood eosinophil counts for the prediction of the severity of exercise-induced bronchospasm in asthma.

It has been suggested that airway eosinophilic inflammation is associated with the severity of exercise-induced bronchospasm (EIB). Blood eosinophils are known to be an indirect marker of airway inflammation in asthma. The aim of this study is to investigate that a simple and easy blood test for blood eosinphil counts may predict the severity of EIB in asthma. Seventy-seven men with perennial asthma (age range 18-23 years) were included. Lung function test, skin prick test, and blood tests for eosinophils counts and total IgE levels were performed. Methacholine bronchial provocation test and, 24 h later, free running test were carried out. EIB was defined as a 15% reduction or more in post-exercise FEV1 compared with pre-exercise FEV1 value. Atopy score was defined as a sum of mean wheal diameters to allergens. EIB was observed in 60 (78%) of 77 subjects. Asthmatics with EIB showed significantly increased percentages of eosinophils (P<0.01), log eosinophil counts (P<0.001), and atopy scores (P<0.05) and decreased log PC20 values (P < 0.05) compared with asthmatics without EIB. Asthmatics with eosinophils of > 700 microl(-1) (36.9 +/- 12.7%) had significantly greater maximal % fall in FEV1 after exercise than asthmatics with eosinophils of < 350 microl(-1) (24.7 +/- 16.6%, P <0.05). Blood eosinophil counts > 350 microl(-1) yielded the specificity of 88% and positive predictive value of 93% for the presence of EIB. When a multiple regression analysis of maximal % fall in FEV1 according to log eosinophil counts, log PC20, log IgE and atopy score was performed, only blood eosinophil counts were significant factor contributing to the maximal % fall in FEV1 after exercise. These findings not only suggest that a simple blood test for eosinophils may be useful in the prediction of the severity of EIB, but also reinforce the view that airway eosinophilic inflammation may play a major role in EIB in asthma.

Combined simulation of combustion and gas flow in a grate-type incinerator.

Computational fluid dynamic (CFD) analysis of the thermal flow in the combustion chamber of a solid waste incinerator provides crucial insight into the incinerator's performance. However, the interrelation of the gas flow with the burning waste has not been adequately treated in many CFD models. A strategy for a combined simulation of the waste combustion and the gas flow in the furnace is introduced here. When coupled with CFD, a model of the waste combustion in the bed provides the inlet conditions for the gas flow field and receives the radiative heat flux onto the bed from the furnace wall and gaseous species. An unsteady one-dimensional bed model was used for the test simulation, in which the moving bed was treated as a packed bed of homogeneous fuel particles. The simulation results show the physical processes of the waste combustion and its interaction with the gas flow for various operational parameters.

Ozonation of wastewater sludge for reduction and recycling.

An ozone treatment system was introduced as an alternative method for municipal sludge treatment and disposal. A pilot-scale facility was built to investigate the feasibility of the ozonation for sludge reduction and recycle. The system consists of three main parts; advanced wastewater treatment, sludge ozone treatment and belt press dewatering. Ozonation of wastewater sludge resulted in mass reduction by mineralization as well as volume reduction by improvement of dewatering characteristics. The supernatant of the ozonated sludge, consisting of solubilized organics and micro-particles, proved to be an effective carbon source for denitrification. A simple economic assessment reveals that the ozonation process can be more economical than incineration for sludge treatment and disposal at small- and medium-sized wastewater treatment plants.

Effects of ginsenosides on vanilloid receptor (VR1) channels expressed in Xenopus oocytes.

Ginsenosides, or ginseng saponins, are biologically active ingredients of Panax ginseng. Accumulating evidence suggests that ginsenosides can alleviate pain from injections of noxious chemicals, such as capsaicin [Nah et al. (2000)]. In this study we examined the effects of ginsenoside Rc on the capsaicin-induced inward current in Xenopus oocytes that expresses the vanilloid receptor 1 (VR1). Ginsenoside Rc enhanced the capsaicin-induced inward current in a concentration-dependent and reversible manner, but ginsenoside Rc itself elicited no membrane currents. The VR1 antagonist capsazepine almost completely blocked the inward current that was elicited by capsaicin plus ginsenoside Rc. We also tested the effect of seven other fractionated ginsenosides (i.e., Rb1, Rb2, Rd, Re, Rf, Rg1, and Rg2) in addition to ginsenoside Rc. We found that six of them significantly enhanced the inward current that is induced by capsaicin with the following order of potency: Rc > Rf > Rg1 approximately Rd > Rb2 > Rb1. These results show the possibility that the in vivo effect of ginsenosides against capsaicin-induced pain is derived from their modulation of the VR1 channel function.

Selective oxidation of allylic sulfides by hydrogen peroxide with the trirutile-type solid oxide catalyst LiNbMoO(6).

Chemoselective sulfur oxidation of allylic sulfides containing double bonds of high electron density due to multiple alkyl substituents or extended conjugation was developed using the composite metal oxide catalyst, LiNbMoO(6), without any epoxidation of the electron-rich double bond(s). Selective oxidation to either the corresponding sulfoxides or the sulfones was realized by controlling the stoichiometry of the quantitative oxidant, H(2)O(2). This new oxidant system had general applicability for chemoselective oxidation of various allylic, benzylic, or propargylic sulfides containing unsaturated carbon-carbon bonds with different electron properties. Various functional groups including hydroxy, formyl, and ethers of THP or TBDMS are compatible under this mild oxidation reaction condition.

Ratio of isolated photon cross sections in pp macro collisions at square root of s = 630 and 1800 GeV.

The inclusive cross section for production of isolated photons has been measured in pp macro collisions at square root of s = 630 GeV with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The photons span a transverse energy (E(T)) range from 7-49 GeV and have pseudorapidity absolute value of eta < 2.5. This measurement is combined with the previous D0 result at square root of s = 1800 GeV to form a ratio of the cross sections. Comparison of next-to-leading-order QCD with the measured cross section at 630 GeV and the ratio of cross sections show satisfactory agreement in most of the E(T) range.

Precision measurement of the spin-dependent asymmetry in the threshold region of 3He(e, e').

We present the first precision measurement of the spin-dependent asymmetry in the threshold region of 3He(e,e') at Q2 values of 0.1 and 0.2 (GeV/c)2. The agreement between the data and nonrelativistic Faddeev calculations which include both final-state interactions and meson-exchange current effects is very good at Q2 = 0.1 (GeV/c)2, while a small discrepancy at Q2 = 0.2 (GeV/c)2 is observed.

Efficient assembly of the phomactin core via two different macrocyclization protocols.

[reaction--see text] The core structure of phomactins C and D was assembled by an efficient strategy starting from 3,4-dimethylcyclohexen-2-one. Key reactions include (1) a high yielding and highly diastereoselective Michael addition of a mixed cuprate, (2) a carbonylative alkyne-enoltriflate coupling or an intramolecular addition of an acetylide onto an aldehyde to form the macrocycle, (3) chemoselective Michael addition of a cuprate to an enynone, to give the carbon framework of desformyl phomactin C or D, and finally (4) regioselective addition of a thia-nucleophile to the more reactive beta-position of the resulting dienone.

Search for new physics using QUAERO: a general interface to D0 event data.

We describe QUAERO, a method that (i) enables the automatic optimization of searches for physics beyond the standard model, and (ii) provides a mechanism for making high energy collider data generally available. We apply QUAERO to searches for standard model WW, ZZ, and t t macro production, to searches for these objects produced through a new heavy resonance, and to the first direct search for W'-->WZ. Through this interface, we make three data sets collected by the D0 experiment at square root of [s] = 1.8 TeV publicly available.

Gene expression profiles of light-induced apoptosis in arrestin/rhodopsin kinase-deficient mouse retinas.

To examine the molecular processes that lead to light-induced retinal degeneration, mutant mice deficient in arrestin and rhodopsin kinase were raised in the dark and then subjected to relatively low doses of white light. The kinetics of the subsequent induction of apoptosis, change in mRNA transcript level, and photoreceptor cell death were monitored. Analysis of transcript profiles identified clusters of genes that responded differently to illumination, including a cluster of photoreceptor-specific genes that showed marked decreases in levels long before morphological damage could be readily ascertained. The behaviors of other gene clusters demonstrate the coordinate induction of stress gene responses early in the course of irradiation. There was little, if any, change in transcript levels corresponding to genes associated with the initiation of apoptosis or antiapoptotic effects. Transcript analysis provides insight into the patterns of gene expression that are associated with the different stages of retinal degeneration in this model system.

G alpha(q/11) coupled to mammalian phospholipase C beta 3-like enzyme mediates the ginsenoside effect on Ca(2+)-activated Cl(-) current in the Xenopus oocyte.

Recently we demonstrated that ginsenosides, the active ingredients of Panax ginseng, enhanced Ca(2+)-activated Cl(-) current in the Xenopus oocyte through a signal transduction mechanism involving the activation of pertussis toxin-insensitive G protein and phospholipase C (PLC). However, it has not yet been determined precisely which G protein subunit(s) and which PLC isoform(s) participate in the ginsenoside signaling. To provide answers to these questions, we investigated the changes in ginsenoside effect on the Cl(-) current after intraoocyte injections of the cRNAs coding various G protein subunits, a regulator of G protein signaling (RGS2), and G beta gamma-binding proteins. In addition, we examined which of mammalian PLC beta 1-3 antibodies injected into the oocyte inhibited the action of ginsenosides on the Cl(-) current. Injection of G alpha(q) or G alpha(11) cRNA increased the basal Cl(-) current recorded 48 h after, and it further prevented ginsenosides from enhancing the Cl(-) current, whereas G alpha(i2) and G alpha(oA) cRNA injection had no significant effect. The changes following G alpha(q) cRNA injection were prevented when G beta(1)gamma(2) and G alpha(q) subunits were co-expressed by simultaneous injection of the cRNAs coding these subunits. Injection of cRNA coding G alpha(q)Q209L, a constitutively active mutant that does not bind to G beta gamma, produced effects similar to those of G alpha(q) cRNA injection. The effects of G alpha(q)Q209L cRNA injection, however, were not prevented by co-injection of G beta(1)gamma(2) cRNA. Injection of the cRNA coding RGS2, which interacts most selectively with G alpha(q/11) among various identified RGS isoforms and stimulates the hydrolysis of GTP to GDP in active GTP-bound G alpha subunit, resulted in a severe attenuation of ginsenoside effect on the Cl(-) current. Finally, antibodies against PLC beta 3, but not -beta 1 and -beta 2, markedly attenuated the ginsenoside effect examined at 3-h postinjection. These results suggest that G alpha(q/11) coupled to mammalian PLC beta 3-like enzyme mediates ginsenoside effect on Ca(2+)-activated Cl(-) current in the Xenopus oocyte.

Novel sigmaF-dependent genes of Escherichia coli found using a specified promoter consensus.

Availability of whole genome information opens new bioinformatics approaches to study global regulation. We developed a program, named ScanProm, that allows to search a genome database for promoter consensus elements. The program uses a multiple alignment of previously identified components of a regulon as an input and generates a consensus profile. The profile is then optimized by adjusting the cutoff value for position-specific similarity assessment and used for a genome scan to search for unknown members of the regulon. The candidates obtained are scored by their similarity to the consensus profile. The ScanProm program was applied to search for novel members of the class III flagellar regulon of Escherichia coli. The search template included the previously defined 4 bp (-35) and 8 bp (-10) promoter elements, presumably recognized by the flagellar-specific sigmaF, with additional 4 bp at the 3' of the -35 consensus. The majority of highly scoring candidates obtained from the whole genome sequence scan were known class III genes, although several new genes were also identified. We tested 10 novel highly scoring candidate class III genes by cloning their promoter fragments into a fusion vector designed to monitor the transcriptional activity with lacZ. Two of these genes, b2737(ygbK) and ppdAB, were found to be dependent on FlhDC, the master regulator of the flagellar genes. The regulation of these genes by sigmaF was further confirmed by comparing their expression in the wild-type and fliA backgrounds. An overproduction or inactivation of these genes did not exhibit any notable phenotypes in motility or chemotaxis.
