[TNF alpha in serum of patients with cholesteatoma].

TNF alfa levels in the sera of patients with cholesteatoma were investigated. Immunoradiometric method was used. TNF alfa levels in the sera of patients with cholesteatoma were higher than in the sera of a control group. The differences were statistically significant.

Cholesteatoma↗

[Proteolytic and antiproteolytic activity of cholesteatoma and granulomatosis tissue of the middle ear].

Cholesteatoma and granulomatosis tissue show proteolytic activity measured in pH 7.6. Cholesteatoma activity was found to be higher than this of granulomatosis tissue. Cholesteatoma does not appear to poses antiplasmin activity. Antiplasmin granulomatosis tissue activity is slight. Both cholesteatoma and granulomatosis tissue show antitrypsin activity. Antitrypsin cholesteatoma activity is lower than that of granulomatosis tissue.

[Concerning diagnosis and treatment of parotid neoplasms].

This study is a review of 57 patients with tumours in the parotid glands who underwent surgery at the ORL Clinic in Białystok. Malignant tumours constituted 17.5% of all parotid tumours and adenoid cystic carcinoma was the dominant type in this group. Pleomorphic adenomas were the most common benign tumour. The role of fine needle aspiration biopsy in diagnosis of parotid tumours is discussed. Superficial parotidectomy was the predominant form of treatment (47 cases). Total parotidectomy was done in 7 cases. The results of treatment are presented.

[Surgical treatment of otosclerosis].

The purpose of the study was evaluation of the surgical treatment of otosclerosis by the method of small and large window. On the basis of four conversation frequencies hearing improvement was assessed in 44 ears after operation. Closure of cochlear reserve to 10 dB was obtained in 70.5% of cases. The mean hearing improvement was 29 dB. The best results were obtained with stapedotomy (small window method), particularly at 4 kHz frequencies.

[Interleukin-1 beta and TNF alpha in serum of patients with otosclerosis].

Levels of interleukin-1 beta and tumor necrosis factor--alfa were determined using immunoradiometric method in the serum of patients who have gone surgical treatment due to otosclerosis. Values of both cytokines were higher in the serum of patients as compared with the control group. As regards TNF-alfa these differences were statistically significant.

[Influence of alcohol on morphological changes of the laryngeal and pharyngeal mucosa].

The long term intake of the ethyl alcohol by rats caused the morphologic changes of plano-epithelial and subepithelial layer of the larynx mucosa. The most expressed lesions were the disconnection of the epithelial structures and its taking into pieces. The changes were accentuated by longer alcohol intake, especially in morphology, size and color.
