[Digital subtraction angiography of cerebrum for diagnosis of cavernous sinus fistula and its intravascular treatment].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the diagnosis of digital subtraction angiography (DSA) of cerebral arteries and the intravascular treatment for carotid artery-cavernous sinus fistula (CCF) mainly manifesting as pulsating exophthalmos. METHODS: Digital subtraction angiography (DSA) of cerebral arteries was carried out for 15 patients with pulsating exophthalmos. Of them, detectable balloon and tungsten filament microcoil were used for intravascular embolism treatment in 12 cases, and the 3 cases with CCF of the branch of external carotid artery were not treated. RESULTS: Of the 15 cases, 12 were fallen in the CCF of high flow type of unilateral internal carotid artery, and 3 in the CCF of low flow type of unilateral external carotid artery. The symptoms and signs of intravascular embolism disappeared after treatment in 11 cases. CONCLUSION: Cerebral artery DSA and intravascular therapy are the ideal methods for the diagnosis and treatment of CCF mainly manifesting as pulsating exophthalmos.

[Relationship between use of antibiotics and chronic diarrhoea in infants and young children].

OBJECTIVE: To study the relationship between use of antibiotics and chronic diarrhea in infants and young children. METHODS: A matched case-control study was carried out in Fuzhou City, Fujian Province during April to October 1997, with a total of 32 cases, (aged 1 - 19 months), with chronic diarrhea (with a length > 2 months), and 128 cases of acute diarrhea (as control group I) and 94 cases of acute respiratory tract infection (as control group II), from the Department of Pediatrics, the First Affiliated Hospital of Fujian Medical University during January 1987 to December 1996. RESULTS: Unconditional multiple logistic regression analysis showed that unreasonable use of antibiotics in treatment for acute diarrhea was the major risk factor for chronic diarrhea (OR = 5.61, 95% CI of OR = 1.15 - 27.36 with control group I, and OR = 16.92, 95% CI of OR = 2.67 - 107.32 with control group II). Chi-square test for trend showed that odds ratio of the use of antibiotics in the cases to the controls increased with the number of antibiotics used in treatment. CONCLUSION: Unreasonable use of antibiotics in treatment for acute diarrhea was an important factor contributing to chronic diarrhea in infants and young children. Early pathogenic diagnosis for diarrhea and reasonable use of antibiotics played important roles in prevention form chronicity of diarrheal diseases.

[Affection of aprotinin on tissue factor pathway inhibitor in peri-operation of cardiac direct vision operation].

Twenty patients underwent cardiac operation with cardiopulmonary bypass(CPB). We collected their blood samples during peri-operation and measured tissue factor pathway inhibitor(TFPI) and active coagulation time(ACT). The results were that TFPI and ACT were significantly increased after heparin injection and during CPB. The changes of TFPI and ACT were similar and pathophysiological; it was evident that heparin stimulated TFPI release and ACT prolonged during cardiac operation with CPB. Aprotinin did not affect the change of TFPI. The results suggest that TFPI has the effect on anticoagulation during CPB.

[Animal model for Alzheimer's disease based on the blockade of neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptors].

The intrahippocampus injection of Kappa-bungarotoxin (K-BGT) caused a significant impairment in learning and memory abilities of mice, in order to create an animal model for Alzheimer's disease. The spatial learning and memory abilities in the Morris water maze in the model group (K-BGT impaired mice) decreased significantly compared with control group. K-BGT impaired mice also showed learning and memory reduction with shorter latency and more mistakes in step-through test.

[Ischemic preconditioning reduces lung ischemia reperfusion injury in vivo rabbits].

Thirty male Japanese white rabbits were randomized into two groups. Fifteen rabbits were treated with ischemic preconditioning(their left lung hilus clamped for 10 min and released for 15 min; Group IP). Fifteen rabbits were not treated with ischemic preconditioning(Group C). Then the left lung hilus of both groups were occlused for 60 min and reperfused for 60 min. The results were that after 60 min of reperfusion, in Group IP, the contents of angiotensin II (Ang II) and artery oxygen tension(PaO2) in blood samples and the contents of superoxide dismutase in lung tissue were significantly higher, while the mean pulmonary artery pressure in blood samples, the wet/dry ratio and malondialdehyde content in lung tissue were significantly lower than those in Group C; Histological findings showed less damage in Group IP. It is suggested that lung ischemic preconditioning can reduce normothermic rabbit lung ischemia-reperfusion injury.

[Clinical research of ischemic preconditioning on lung protection].

Twenty patients, who only need to occlude main pulmonary artery underwent pulmonectomy, were randomized into two groups. Ten patients were treated with ischemic preconditioning(IP). Their main pulmonary artery was clamped for 10 minutes and released for 10 minutes(Group IP). Ten patients were not treated with ischemic preconditioning(Group C). The results showed that the content of calcitonin gene related peptide(CGRP) in Group IP was significantly higher than that in Group C after ischemic preconditioning. After lung reperfusion for 30 minutes, the value of superoxide dismutase and pulmonary vein blood oxygen tension in Group IP was significantly higher than that in Group C. It is evident that ischemic preconditioning could reduce normothermic human lung ischemia reperfusion injury. The possible mechanism is that ischemic preconditioning increases the production of endogenous CGRP.

[Study on regulators of the cell cycle in cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma].

In order to investigate the relationship between the regulators of cell cycle and cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma(SCC), we used an immunohistochemical staining technique to examine the expression of cyclin D1, p16 and Rb in the paraffin embedded skin cancer tissues of 30 patients with SCC. The positive percentage of cyclin D1, CDK4, p16 and Rb was 66.7%, 53.3%, 33.3%, and 36.7%, respectively. The overexpression of cyclin D1 and CDK4 could be observed frequently in low grade of differentiated cells, especially in marginal cells of the cancer nest. The results indicate that the aberrant expression of positive and negative regulators of the cell cycle may be involved in the carcinogenesis and evolution of SCC.

[Reinnervation of skin flap by end-to-side neuro-anastomosis in the repair of soft tissue defect of heel].

OBJECTIVE: The repair of soft tissue defect of heel by traditional operation did not restore the sensation of the heel. METHODS: In order to solve this problem, the saphenous neurovascular skin flap reinnervated by end-to-side neuro-anastomosis was designed and 3 male patients with soft tissue defects of the heel were so treated. Grossgraft of saphenous neurovascular skin flap was employed for repairing the soft tissue defects of heel and the pedicle was divided at 21 days after operation. The end-to-side neuro-anastomosis was used to reinnervate not only the skim flap, but also the skin area of the medial malleolus, medial aspect of the foot and the big toe of the donor limb. RESULTS: After follow-up of 6-12 months, the walking and weight bearing functions of the affected limbs were good, the contour of the grafted area was satisfactory, and the recovery of sensation of the skin flap, the medial malleolus, the medial aspect of the foot and the big toe was observed. CONCLUSION: 1. Crossgraft of the saphenous skin flap was an effective method to repair the soft tissue defect of the heel; 2. End-to-side neuro-anastomosis could restore the sensation of the skin flap.

[Application of power band graph method to the modeling and simulation of cardiovascular system].

This paper presents a computer simulation model of the cardiovascular circulation system, which describes the blood flow dynamic law in the cardiovascular system by the state equation. The model can be used in physiological study and computer-aided medical education. In this paper, the Power Band Graph (PBG) modeling method is used to realize modeling of the human circulation system and conduct a simulation study on a simplified physiological system model. The results demonstrate that the PBG method, as an understandable and unity modeling method, is quite effective and practicable and can be used widely in the field of physiological system simulation.
