Following the daily administration of 10 mg of cyproterone acetate to three normal fertile human volunteers for 12 to 16 weeks, there was a marked decrease in the count, motility, and cervical mucus-penetrating ability of spermatozoa, with a concomitant increase in abnormal and immature forms. The levels of seminal acid phosphatase and glycerylphosphoryl choline were also significantly decreased. Subsequently, concurrent daily administration of 75 mg of mesterolone increased the count, motility, and cervical mucus-penetrating ability of spermatozoa and stimulated the seminal biochemical constituents. The results indicate that the effects of a low dose of cyproterone acetate are due mainly to peripheral androgen deprivation.

The effects of chronic administration of two organophosphorus insecticides, parathion and malathion on the growth rate, ascorbic acid metabolism and some other nutritional and physiological parameters in rats were studied. Both parathion and malathion toxicity retarded the growth rate of rats. Inhibition of brain acetylcholinesterase was taken as an index of organophosphorus insecticide toxicity. Haemoglobin concentration of blood and organ weights were not affected under the toxic conditions. Parathion and malathion administration stimulated the activity of L-gulonolactone oxidase along with a simultaneous increase in the tissue storage and urinary excretion of vitamin C. The activities of other enzymes of ascorbic acid metabolism, dehydroascorbatase, uronolactonase, and L-gulonate dehydrogenase and decarboxylase were altered under the experimental conditions. Only minor histological changes of the liver and kidney tissues were noted under parathion and malathion toxicities. Excess intake of vitamin C under the toxic conditions was found to be very effective in counteracting the growth retardation and also the alterations produced by parathion and malathion both at the enzymatic and histological levels.

The effects of chronic polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) compound toxicity on L-ascorbic acid metabolism in rats have been studied. PCB treatment brought about a depression in the activities of the enzymes L-gluonolactone oxidase and dehydroascorbatase along with an increased tissue levels and urinary excretion of L-ascorbic acid. PCB toxicity drastically disturbed the normal histological pattern of the liver cells and also significantly changed the hepatic lipid composition. L-ascorbic acid supplementation to the toxicated group of animals, although could not prevent the growth retardative effect of PCB, could afford a definite protection against the enzyme activity alterations and histological changes as caused by PCB toxicity.
Roles of various infections, neoplasms and granulomatous diseases in fever of unknown origin were studied in 22 patients. Bacterial infections were responsible in seven (32 percent), herpes viruses in five (23 percent), neoplasms in four (18 percent) and granulomata in two (9 percent) cases. Patients with herpes infections had initially no clinical or routine laboratory clues to viral involvement, and were given an intensive workup for 5 to 15 days. The diagnosis was made on the basis of cytomegalovirus or Epstein-Barr virus lgM antibody titers.

Two types of interspecific amoeba hybrids, viz. PnIc (Amoeba proteus nucleus in A. indica cytoplasm) and InPc (A. indica nucleus in A. proteus cytoplasm), were tested for their [125I]Concanavalin A (Con A) binding activity at different periods of time. The cell surface binding of the labelled Con A was reduced to approx. 40 and 75% in the PnIc and InPc cells, respectively, 96 h after the cells were made hybrids. A significant increase in the binding of radioactive Con A was observed after the homologous nucleus was back transferred into InPc cells, but not in PnIc cells. No significant difference in the binding of the radioactive Con A was found between the progeny of the hybrid amoebae and the control amoebae. The Con A binding activity of the interspecific amoebae has been discussed in relation to the changes in the cytoplasmic membrane structures which presumably play a role in the formation of cell surface in the amoebae.
