The news on smoking: newspaper coverage of smoking and health in Australia, 1987-88.

All newspaper articles (n = 1601) mentioning tobacco or smoking drawn from a 12-month census of 30 Australian capital city newspapers in 1987-88 were coded for content, "slant," and apparent origin. Overall, 62 percent of articles were positive in their orientation toward smoking control objectives, 17 percent were negative, and 21 percent were neutral. Newspapers owned by Rupert Murdoch published 55.7 percent positive and 23.7 percent negative articles compared to 68.0 percent positive and 13.7 percent negative articles in the other large chain of Australian newspapers.

Episodic twice-daily treatment for recurrent genital herpes.

A new dosage regimen of orally administered acyclovir, 800 mg twice daily for five days, for the treatment of recurrent genital herpes was compared with the standard dosage of 200 mg given five times per day. A double-blind study of 157 patients was used to evaluate the safety and efficacy of both regimens. The new regimen was well tolerated, more convenient, and as effective as the standard dosage. In male patients, the new regimen may be more effective than the standard regimen of 200 mg given five times per day to treat lesions that are already present.

The trichothiodystrophy syndrome of Pollitt.

Trichothiodystrophy, or sulphur-deficient brittle hair, is a clinical marker for a syndrome that consists primarily of cystine (and hence sulphur)-deficient brittle hair, nail dysplasia, mental and physical retardation and decreased fertility. The radiological aspects of this syndrome have received scant mention in the literature. I describe a 5-year-old boy whose skeleton exhibits axial osteosclerosis and peripheral osteopenia which is similar to two other previously described cases.

Pharmacokinetics of acyclovir suspension in infants and children.

Eighteen children from 3 weeks to 6.9 years of age were given an oral acyclovir suspension for herpes simplex or varicella-zoster virus infections. Thirteen patients who were 6 months to 6.9 years old received 600 mg/m2 per dose, and three infants and two children less than 2 years old were given 300 mg/m2 per dose. The drug was given four times a day, except to one infant who was treated with three doses a day. Among the 13 children who received the 600-mg/m2 dose, the maximum concentration in plasma (Cmax) was 0.99 +/- 0.38 microgram/ml (mean +/- standard deviation), the time to maximum concentration (Tmax) was 3.0 +/- 0.86 h, the area under the curve (AUC) was 5.56 +/- 2.17 micrograms.h/ml, and the elimination half-life (t1/2) was 2.59 +/- 0.78 h. The three infants less than 2 months of age who received the 300-mg/m2 dose had a Cmax of 1.88 +/- 1.11 micrograms/ml, a Tmax of 4.10 +/- 0.48 h, an AUC of 6.54 +/- 4.32 micrograms.h/ml, and a t1/2 of 3.26 +/- 0.33 h. The acyclovir suspension was well tolerated by young children. No adverse effects requiring discontinuation of the drug occurred.
