A 70-year-old man, a 59-year-old woman, and a 57-year-old woman underwent pars plana vitrectomy. In all three cases, cataracts developed in the eyes that had been operated on. During cataract extraction, which included massage of the globe after retrobulbar anesthesia and a conventional ab externo incision, loss of lens material into the vitreous cavity occurred in all three postvitrectomy eyes.

Serum alkaline phosphatase levels of five species of fresh water fish hosts were altered by trypanosome parasites. The loss in enzymatic activity ranged from 3.91% to 69.91% in the five species of infected fishes as compared to normal level in the healthy hosts. The maximal reduction in the enzymatic activity caused by trypanosomes was observed in the herbivore carp fish Cirrhina mrigala and the minimal loss in the fresh water shark Wallago attu.
Serum cholesterol levels of six species of fresh water fishes were lowered due to trypanosome infection. The percentage of infection in the different species of hosts ranged from 3.27% in Clarias batrachus to 16.66% in Wallago attu. Loss in serum cholesterol level was highest (42.39%) in the spiny eel Mastocembelus armotus and lowest in the carp Cirrhina mrigala (4.56%). Thus hypocholesterolemia was evidently caused in the fishes by trypanosomes.
Normal human peripheral-blood lymphocytes were irradiated with a dose of X-rays and processed for electron microscopic examination at different times after irradiation. A localized protrusion of the plasma membrane of the irradiated lymphocytes was observed in samples fixed as early as 15 min after irradiation, suggesting that the injury to the plasma membrane could have occurred during or immediately after irradiation. This was followed by fenestration of the plasma membrane, rarefaction of the cytoplasm and accumulation of cytoplasmic organelles in the centrosphere region. Localized distention of the outer nuclear envelope occurred after 2 hours and invagination of the inner nuclear membrane after 4 hours of irradiation. By 24 hours, the cytoplasmic and nuclear ultrastructural integrity was lost. The study suggested that, for high doses of X-radiation, the plasma membrane of the human peripheral-blood lymphocytes was the most sensitive target.
The proportion of thymus-dependent (T) lymphocytes in the blood and the ability to mount cutaneous delayed hypersensitivity to a battery of antigens were evaluated in 50 low birth weight (LBW) infants when they were 3 months to 5 years old. There was a significant reduction in the number of T lymphocytes. Delayed hypersensitivity was impaired. The abnormalities were more pronounced in those with persistent growth retardation. It is suggested that continued postnatal depression of cell-mediated immunity in LBW infants may contribute to increased frequency of infections and immunopathological diseases.
