BACKGROUND: In Manipur, a state in northeast India bordering Myanmar, within one year of reports of a high human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) seroprevalence among young injecting drug users, there has been a rapid spread of HIV infection in the general population. METHODS: Since 1990 our unit, together with the Medical Directorate, Government of Manipur, has studied different aspects of this epidemic, especially the natural history of HIV in this setting. RESULTS: Here we report the first case of herpes zoster in a 14-month-old HIV-positive baby (diagnosed by the polymerase chain reaction). The case was referred to our clinic by one of our patients residing in the same locality as the child and presently working as a counsellor in a drug detoxification-cum-rehabilitation centre at Imphal, Manipur. Dual infection of HIV and herpes zoster was also found in several other members of the same family. CONCLUSION: This report of perinatally acquired HIV infection in an environment of injecting drug users in India might help in understanding the course of paediatric HIV infection here.
Quantitative DNA analysis was performed on preoperative fine needle aspirates of 12 breast cancers and 1 benign lesion using the Cell Analysis Systems (CAS) Model 200 image analysis system. The smears were prepared on CAS slides, routinely processed for Papanicolaou staining, and then destained and restained with Feulgen stain after cytologic evaluation. Four cases were DNA diploid, 3 were tetraploid, 1 was diploid/tetraploid, and 5 were aneuploid. When compared to analysis of samples from the resected tumor, both DNA index and S-phase fraction were constant.
The results of MLPA test using serum and filter paper eluate have been compared in this paper. Testing 64 patient samples at 1:32 dilution, 31 were negative by both serum and eluate, 20 were positive by both, six were positive only by serum and one was positive only eluate. In six other cases eluate gave equivocal results while serum result was clearly positive. Some eluates negative at 1:32 dilution gave weak positive agglutination at 1:16 dilution.
Susceptibility tests were carried out with insecticides like Organochlorine Organophosphorus and Synthetic pyrethroids using the WHO test kits against Anopheles stephensi larvae and adults, collected from malaria endemic wards of Calcutta in December, 1995 and January, 1996 Anopheles stephensi adults were found resistant to DDT, Propoxure, Malathion but susceptible to Fenthion and Deltamethrin.
