[Inhalation of metallic mercury. Radiological aspect. Apropos of 2 cases].

Two patients were treated for lesions due to inhalation of mercury, one accidental and the other a suicidal attempt. The pulmonary image showed the mercury fragmented into numerous particles of very enhanced density. In one patient these particles were in the right basal pyramid while in the other they were disseminated throughout the lung fields. The immediate outcome was favorable in both cases.

[Extradural hematoma after the surgical treatment of kyphosis].

Two patients developed paraplegia during the course of surgical reduction and fixation of kyphosis: one of congenital origin and the other related to Marfan's disease. Myelography with contrast showed an extramedullary hematoma, treated surgically.

[Dynamic study of miction in patients with spinal cord injuries. Comparison with cystomanometry in 50 cases].

Video recordings during radiodynamic studies of miction (ERDM) in 50 patients with spinal cord injuries produced images markedly superior in quality to permictional films in cases of dysuria. Correlation with cystosphincterometry (CSM) findings were good for normal cases. Dynamic studies were more effective than CSM for the neck, but less reliable for the detrusor and striated muscle on the condition than an electromyogram had been performed. In patients with complete spasticity the type of miction cannot be predicted from the level of the lesion.

[Ultrasonic evaluation of the urinary tract in patients with spinal cord injuries. Systematic comparison with intravenous urography in 50 cases].

Intravenous urography and ultrasonography were performed routinely, and at the same time, in 50 patients with spinal cord injuries, to compare diagnostic efficacy. Ultrasound was found to be as reliable as intravenous urography in 92% of renal and bladder explorations and to supply additional data on these regions in 6% of cases. It was also found to be equally effective for ureteral dilatation cases, although the site and nature of the obstacle could not be established except in 66% of patients. Ultrasound imaging should therefore play an important role in the urologic surveillance of these patients.

Adolescent↗

[Spondylo-enchondrodysplasia].

A case is reported of spondyloenchondrodysplasia associating platyspondylia and generalized enchondromatosis, affecting the spine also but absent in the extremities. A literature review enabled this entity to be grouped within the framework of other enchondroplasias with vertebral lesions. Radiologic signs and genetic data suggest heterogeneity of this group of affections.

Child↗

[Cerebral schistosomiasis. X-ray computed tomographic aspect. Apropos of a case].

A patient with cerebral schistosomiasis, a diagnosis suggested by residence in an endemic zone, presented non-specific appearances on computed tomography imaging seen as multiple hypodense zones filling with contrast medium at the periphery. Diagnosis was confirmed by biopsy during operation on a cerebral lesion and the regression of the lesions during specific therapy.

Brain Diseases↗

[Posttraumatic esophagopericardial fistula].

The outcome in a case of esophagopericardiac fistula due to a closed chest injury was spontaneously favorable, the absence of infective complications probably resulting from adequate antibiotic therapy.

Esophageal Fistula↗

[Calcified herniated disk at the dorsal level].

Computed tomography examinations were conducted in two cases of calcified thoracic vertebral disc hernias. The physiopathology, polymorphic clinical features, radiological appearances (including CT scans) and treatment are discussed.

Adult↗

[Phlebography in recent injuries of the lower limbs. Its role in operative decisions].

67 patients were transferred to a traumatology centre within a mean period of 8 days following an accident in order to envisage treatment of their fractures. Routine pre-operative phlebography was undertaken in 37 patients. It detected the presence of thromboses in 46% of cases. Anticoagulant treatment was started immediately and the date of orthopaedic surgery delayed because of the risk of pulmonary embolism.

Adolescent↗

[Cervical osteolysis. Initial manifestation of embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma].

Initial manifestations in a patient with an embryonic rhabdomyosarcoma were signs of cervical spine osteolysis. Initial histological diagnosis of a chordoma was rejected on the basis of the site of the tumor and then eliminated by a second histological study. The course was fulminating over a period of 8 months. Comparison between this case and intracranial localizations of the tumor are possible because of mild initial involvement of the soft tissues.

Adult↗

[Thymic seminoma].

A 27-year-old man presented with signs of a thymic seminoma. This rare tumor is difficult to diagnose on histologic examination, and pre-operative diagnosis is important because of its marked radiosensitivity (which justifies limited excision only).
