The effects of two non-steroidal antiandrogens, flutamide and casodex, were evaluated in prepubertal male rats. Animals (23 days old) were subcutaneously administered vehicle or 1, 2, 5, or 10 mg/day of flutamide or casodex for 10 days. Testis weights were diminished at the 10 mg/day dose of both antiandrogens. A significant increase in serum luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) levels was detected. Notwithstanding, flutamide influenced LH/FSH levels more severely than casodex. No changes were observed in serum prolactin. Serum testosterone, dihydrotestosterone, and 3 alpha-androstanediol levels were increased in flutamide-treated rats from the 2 mg/day dose, whereas only 3 alpha-androstanediol was modified at 10 mg/day of casodex, suggesting a differential effect on androgen metabolism. An elevation of testicular concentration and basal production of androgens was found, indicating that flutamide and casodex administration are capable of stimulating testicular steroidogenesis, as well as 5 alpha-reduction. However, the in vitro maximal responsiveness of the gonads to human chorionic gonadotropin was preserved. Antiandrogen administration did not modify testicular androgen binding protein concentration. In conclusion, the blockade of androgen action during sexual maturation caused profound changes on the pituitary-gonadal axis in male rats.
The aim of the present study was to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of curettage vs hysteroscopic resection in the treatment of endometrial polyps. A group of 25 patients were examined and during surgery underwent diagnostic hysteroscopy, curettage of the uterine cavity, control hysteroscopy and resectoscopy in the event of residual polyps. Thirteen cases revealed the total persistence of the polyp after curettage and in 6 cases the polyp was only partially removed; the polyp was detached but not removed from the uterine cavity in 4 cases and the polyp was fully removed using the curette in only 2 cases. The considerable limits of curettage which emerge from this study appear to be linked to three main factors: the localization, nature and size of endometrial polyps. Curettage may therefore now be considered a method which has been surpassed in not only diagnostic but also therapeutic terms by hysteroscopic techniques.
Hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) are hepatotropic and lymphotropic viruses endemic to Sicily. To evaluate whether these viruses may chronically infect patients with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) and without liver disease, we examined serum samples from 24 such patients. Five cases (20.8%) revealed HCV infection, as shown by the detection of viral RNA through the polymerase chain reaction technique, while HBV-DNA was not found in any of them by the same method. These results provide one more epidemiological element supporting the hypothesis that the association between HCV infection and lymphoproliferative diseases is not a casual event, and show that HCV may chronically infect patients with NHL without producing liver damage.
