Determinants and consequences of burnout: a cross-cultural comparison of Canadian and Jordanian nurses.

We compared the determinants and consequences of burnout for Canadian (N = 586) and Jordanian (N = 263) registered nurses working in a hospital setting. LISREL 7 software was used to perform a path analysis testing hypothesized relationships between job satisfaction dimensions (supervision, hospital identification, kind of work, amount of work, physical work conditions, rewards, and career future) and burnout and intention to quit. For both Canadian and Jordanian nurses, kind of work, amount of work, and career future were important determinants of burnout. Career future and burnout (emotional exhaustion) were associated with intention to quit on the basis of the highly similar results across the two samples, we propose that a universal theoretical model of the determinants and consequences of burnout among nurses may be plausible.

A developmental test based on the STYCAR sequences used in the National Childhood Encephalopathy Study.

During the National Childhood Encephalopathy Study, standard neurodevelopmental assessments had to be performed on a large number of children under 3 years of age scattered throughout Great Britain. Currently available tests were reviewed but were found to be impractical for this purpose. We describe a simple test procedure, based on the STYCAR sequences, suitable for use in a clinic or at home with the minimum of special equipment. Results were reliable and provided an informative record of a child's developmental progress. It may be possible to modify the scheme for general use.

Outreach STD clinics for prostitutes in Edinburgh.

This paper describes the establishment of Genito-Urinary Medicine outreach clinics based in 2 drop-in centres for female prostitutes in Edinburgh; 242 women have received medical care at these outreach clinics. STD screening has been carried out on 160 (63%), detecting one case of gonorrhoea, 11 cases of chlamydia, 11 cases of genital warts, and 2 cases of recurrent genital herpes. With regards to HIV serostatus, 8 women were already known to be HIV seropositive and 18 were known to be seronegative. One hundred and fifteen women have been tested at the outreach clinics, yielding one positive result. The serostatus of 91 women is unknown. There have been 42 pregnancies, some of which were conceived through client contact. The prevalence of STDs including HIV is low and would suggest that condom usage is high. However, this level of usage is associated with significant numbers of unwanted pregnancies. Prostitutes in Edinburgh do not appear to act as a significant focus for dissemination of HIV infection.

The group that cares for carers.

In response to two surveys of carers a carers group was set up at the Day Hospital of Wharfedale General Hospital. It aims not only to provide emotional support to empower elderly patients and their carers but also to supply a means of communication with professionals.

The delayed effects of ethacrynic acid on the stria vascularis of the guinea pig.

Guinea pigs were administered 40 mg ethacrynic acid per kg b.wt. and sacrificed at 30-48 minutes, 3-4 hours, 2 or 7 days post-drug. Cochlear potentials (EP and CP) were monitored before sacrifice. At 30-48 minutes, the potentials had decreased considerably, and a marked edema plus cytological changes were visible in the stria vascularis. The potentials had recovered to about 75% of their original value at 3-4 hours; some cell recovery was visible, but the edema was still present. Potentials recorded from the basal turn were normal at 2 and 7 days, although some strial cells showed deterioration.

Faculty development: a transcultural experience.

A collaborative education program between Schools of Nursing at the Jordan University of Science and Technology and the University of Windsor, funded by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), provides advanced clinical and theoretical education for Jordanian faculty and thus enriches the education of nursing students. This article describes the preparation of the faculty development proposal and the implementation of the project in a transcultural context, and identifies strengths and limitations of the project. Recommendations for effective strategies regarding international development in nursing education are made and a discussion of the benefits that ensued to both faculties is included.

Development of human resources in nursing: a collaborative initiative in CPR.

BACKGROUND: An international collaborative project between Jordanian and Canadian University nursing faculty was developed to enhance staff development for practicing nurses in Jordan. A needs assessment indicated a lack of knowledge and performance among staff nurses in emergency situations. METHOD: Using the "train-the-trainer" concept, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) workshops were organized and implemented in three government and one military hospital. University faculty developed and conducted the first workshops when local trainers were prepared to provide the program in their institutions. RESULTS: Local trainers currently provide CPR workshops on an ongoing basis in their institutions. To date, 10 hospitals and one health center have requested CPR workshops for nursing staff. CONCLUSION: The CPR workshops met the needs of the hospital nursing community and strengthened the partnership between the university faculty and local community staff nurses.

A protocol for the detection of Chlamydia.

In spite of the fact that chlamydia can cause a variety of diseases affecting a variety of organs, health professionals and, in particular, the public seem to lack awareness of the difficulties the organism presents. The authors discuss how chlamydia affects humans, how it is diagnosed and treated, and then described the setting up of a multidisciplinary protocol that has assisted in the diagnosis of women attending gynaecology and genito-urinary medicine clinics. The protocol has resulted in many asymptomatic women being correctly diagnosed and treated, and the successful contact tracing of sexual partners. Multidisciplinary co-operation, the authors suggest, is the secret behind the protocol's success.

Setting up an HIV-testing service with same-day results.

The advent of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) has meant that the speciality of genito-urinary medicine has had to respond promptly and decisively in order to limit the extent of infection. This paper describes how a unit has made its service more adaptable to clients' needs to encourage people to come forward for HIV tests. The results of the study reported demonstrate the demand for this service.
