Irradiating with a prosthesis or metal pin in the radiation treatment field.

This is a case study of a patient who had a liposarcoma of the tibia and also had a titanium pin directly in the treatment field. A total midline dose of 63 Gy was prescribed. The effects of the pin in the treated area was examined. Four different methods were used to examine and verify the delivered dose: (1) Treatment planning computerized isodose curves, (2) A parallel plate ion chamber and polystyrene phantom, (3) TLD, and (4) Film dosimetry. The results from all four methods of dose examination are compiled and are used to make a decision on what to do about the dose non-uniformity due to the dense titanium pin. If a prosthesis or metal pin is in the treatment area, one must determine the composition of the pin. Then one should verify or examine the results of the dose perturbations produced. One may or may not want to change the original dose prescription but the dose throughout the irradiated volume will be changed due to the metal pin. It is important to evaluate these effects, as discussed in this article, to accurately deliver a prescribed dose.

Primary hydatid cyst of the brain in an adult: report of a case.

Primary hydatid cyst of the brain in adults is rare and may pose multiple diagnostic problems. A 27-year-old man who presented with mild headache was diagnosed as having an isolated hydatid cyst of the brain. Computed tomographic findings, precautions at operation, and the risk of dissemination are discussed, and available literature is reviewed.

Lectin mediated agglutination of Candida kefyr cells and their spheroplasts grown in sterol enriched growth medium and its correlation with lipid composition.

Supplementation of the growth medium with erosterol, cholesterol and lanosterol enriched the Candida kefyr cells, presumably cell membranes with sterols. Sterol enriched C. kefyr cells showed a decrease in percentage of PHA and Con-A mediated agglutination. Sterol supplementation also increased the sterol: phospholipid ratio and in such cells unsaturated fatty acids predominated over saturated ones. The overall effect of these changes resulted in rigidifying the cell membranes as indicated by shift of break in Arrhenius plots of Mg2+ ATPase. This showed that lectin mediated agglutination of yeast cells may be affected by its membrane fluidity.

Descending projection neurons to the spinal cord of the goldfish, Carassius auratus.

The sources of descending spinal tracts in the goldfish, Carassius auratus, were visualized by retrograde transport of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) administered to the hemisected spinal cord. In the diencephalon, HRP-positive neurons were identified in the nucleus preopticus magnocellularis pars magnocellularis and ventromedial nucleus of the thalamus of the ipsilateral side. In the mesencephalic tegmentum, a few somata of the contralateral nucleus ruber and several ipsilateral neurons of the nucleus of the median longitudinal fasciculus were labeled. The reticular formation of the rhombencephalon was the major source of descending afferents to the spinal cord. A larger number of neurons were retrogradely labeled in the ipsilateral superior, middle, and inferior nuclei than in the contralateral nuclei. A few raphe neurons and the contralateral Mauthner neuron were also HRP-positive. The octaval area showed retrogradely labeled neurons in the anterior, magnocellular, descending, and posterior octaval nuclei of the ipsilateral side. A large number of neurons in the facial lobe and a few somata located adjacent to the descending trigeminal tract were labeled on the ipsilateral side. The pattern of descending spinal projections in goldfish is comparable to that of tetrapods and suggests that the spinal tracts have originated quite early in the course of vertebrate evolution.

Visual system of the channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus): II. The morphology associated with the multiple optic papillae and retinal ganglion cell distribution.

The retinal organization associated with the multiple optic papillae of the catfish Ictalurus punctatus was examined. In each retina from ten to 17 papillae form an oval ring (which is wider dorsoventrally than mediolaterally). The dorsalmost papilla in this ring lies at the center of the retina. In addition, up to seven small papillae lie within the ring. Bundles of fibers leave the neural retina via the papillae. These bundles remain separate as they pass through the distal portions of the neural retina and then merge before passing through the choroid. Bundles running through dorsal papillae receive fibers from a roughly wedge-shaped retinal area; bundles running through ventral papillae receive fibers from a small area of central retina and a disproportionately large area of peripheral retina. A band of high ganglion cell density was observed extending between the nasal and temporal poles of the retina. No correlation was found between the retinal areas contributing fibers to the bundles of axons emerging from individual papillae and the areas of high cell density. Furthermore, no correlation was found between the average area of the retinal ganglion cells and the ganglion cell density. From HRP preparations and axon counts we estimate that each retina of 95-mm catfish contains about 50,000 ganglion cells.

UVB phototherapy and photochemotherapy (PUVA) in the treatment of polymorphic light eruption and solar urticaria.

Forty subjects (36 with polymorphic light eruption and four with solar urticaria) were treated during the spring and early summer of the years 1982 to 1985 with either UVB phototherapy (a total of 54 treatment courses in subjects with polymorphic light eruption) or photochemotherapy (PUVA) (18 treatment courses in polymorphic light eruption and eight in solar urticaria patients). Both forms of prophylactic therapy were found to be effective in 90% of those with polymorphic light eruption, and PUVA in all those with solar urticaria. The optimum duration of treatment was 5 weeks. Adverse reactions, although common, were usually slight and rarely required alteration of the treatment regimen.

Measurement of flunixin in equine inflammatory exudate and plasma by high performance liquid chromatography.

An accurate and reliable method for the separation of flunixin from, and measurement in, equine inflammatory exudate and plasma by high performance liquid chromatography has been developed. Flunixin can be detected in concentrations as low as 0.05 micrograms/ml using an ultraviolet spectrophotometric detector at 285 nm. Samples were acidified with 2M hydrochloric acid and extracted with dichloromethane. The extract was evaporated and reconstituted in acetonitrile. Iminodibenzyl was used as internal standard. The mean recovery of flunixin from plasma was 97.6 +/- 3.9 per cent. Particular advantages of the method are the short analysis time and ease of sample preparation. Data were obtained on the distribution of flunixin between plasma and acute inflammatory exudate following administration of a single intravenous dose of 1.1 mg/kg bodyweight flunixin meglumine. The drug was cleared more slowly from exudate than from plasma.

Carcinoma of the penis. A 12-year review.

Seventy-eight patients with carcinoma of the penis treated over a period of twelve years (1972-1983) were retrospectively analyzed. According to Jackson's clinical staging, 18.0 per cent were in stage I, 20.5 in stage II, 26.9 in stage III, and 34.6 per cent in stage IV. Some early-stage patients (12 with stage I and 4 with stage II) were primarily treated by external irradiation to a dose of 55 Gy/5 week/25 fr. Thirteen of these 16 patients had local control with preservation of the organ. The remaining patients with stage II were treated by partial or total penectomy. In stage III penectomy with inguinopelvic lymph node dissection was done. Stage IV patients received palliative irradiation and/or chemotherapy. There years' disease-free survival (including salvage surgery) was 93 per cent in stage I, 62.5 per cent in stage II and 38 per cent in stage III.

Topography of retinodiencephalic projections in adult channel catfish.

In order to determine the topography of retinal axons in diencephalic nuclei of Ictalurus punctatus, horseradish peroxidase was applied to the optic papillae. The topography was found to be similar in all nuclei in that the terminal endings of ventral retinal axons innervated rostrodorsally whereas dorsal retinal axons innervated caudoventrally. In general, the retinal topography in the diencephalon corresponded with the topography of retinal axons in the optic tracts. These data suggest a relation between retinal axon ordering within a target and the pathway by which axons enter the target.
