A case of Werner syndrome is reported. The patient was prematurely old, had skin atrophy, characteristic posterior subcapsular cataracts and prepubertal primary hypogonadism. Additional ocular features compatible with premature ageing included presbyopia, arcus seniles and diminished tear flow. Diabetes mellitus, poliosis, baldness and beak-like nose were not present.
Antibodies titres against Coxsackie-B (CB) and mumps virus (MV) were determined in 180 normal subjects and two groups of diabetics, 236 with diabetes of recent onset (DRO) and 108 with diabetes of long duration (DLD). Positive antibody titres to these viruses were found more frequently in controls than in diabetics. In fact, the percentage of positive titres was significantly less than in controls in several instances particularly in juvenile onset diabetes of long duration. These data suggest that CB and MV are not causally related to human diabetes mellitus.

A temperature sensitive mutant of Escherichia coli which fails to recover from prolonged carbon starvation, was found to be irreversibly killed by exposure to a nonpermissive temperature (43 degrees C), with a half-life of about half an hour. This bacteriocidal effect of the temperature could be reversed by a number of antibiotics which block protein synthesis but not by blocking DNA synthesis. At the nonpermissive temperature, RNA and the protein synthetic capacities decrease before the DNA synthetic capacity is decreased. Analysis of ribosomal proteins and methylation of them did not reveal any consistent differences between the parental and mutant strains. Analysis of the ribosomal RNA revealed that it is being synthesized in similar amounts as in the parental strain at the nonpermissive temperature, however, after chase its level is decreased. Moreover, the 17S precursor RNA is slow to mature to 16S rRNA in the mutant strain at the nonpermissive temperature. Thus, these studies suggest that the mutation studied here affects a late maturation step in the synthesis of the rRNA. Therefore the gene is designated rimH (for ribosomal modification). All the properties bestowee on the mutant strain are caused by a single pleiotropic mutation which maps at min 14 of the E. coli map. Three point transduction crosses suggest the order rimH, leuS, RNA, LIP. This gene maps outside the two known clusters for ribosomal structural genes.

PURPOSE: We report the gray-scale, color, and power Doppler findings in 3 cases of postpartum ovarian vein thrombophlebitis (PPOVT), an uncommon but potentially lethal disorder. METHODS: A retrospective review of medical records revealed 3 patients with PPOVT who had pelvic sonography performed during the disease course. RESULTS: The sonographic findings of PPOVT included a tubular, hypoechoic mass identified anterior to the psoas muscle in all cases. Perivenous phlegmon formation resulted in hydronephrosis and obstructive periureteritis in 1 case. Inferior vena cava involvement was detected in 2 cases. Decreases in the sizes of the thrombus and the phlegmon were seen on post-treatment studies. CONCLUSIONS: The long course of the thrombosed ovarian vein and the presence of inferior vena cava thrombus are sonographic signs helpful in distinguishing PPOVT from other inflammatory conditions. Sonography cannot be proposed as a primary tool in the diagnosis of PPOVT because it successfully diagnosed only 1 of our 3 cases. However, sonography may be useful in monitoring the response to anticoagulant therapy.
Endometriosis is a condition in which endometrial tissue becomes implanted on extrauterine sites, most commonly within the pelvis. Malignant transformation of endometriotic foci is rare, but has been frequently reported. We describe a patient with a CT scan demonstrating pathologically proven perihepatic endometriosis, including malignant transformation. Endometrioses should be considered in the differential diagnosis of perihepatic masses.
