Organ weights in autopsy cases from an urban apex hospital.

The available limited anatomical and physiological data have been compiled for Indian adult as a part of ongoing efforts in the country to formulate an Indian Reference Man for radiation protection purposes. The parameters included weight, height, body surface area, weight of various organs (brain, heart, kidney, lung, liver etc.), total body water, extra-cellular water, blood volume, specific gravity, total lung capacity, vital capacity etc. The data have been drawn from post-mortem studies (566 males and 185 females) and other data from published work on 433 healthy male and 137 female volunteers. Data gaps have been filled by the method of pooling wherever necessary. This paper presents the intercomparison of the present data with the data available from other sources. The data from various Indian sources indicate a similar trend. However, a significant difference (P less than 0.01) was observed in organ weights and total body weights, in comparison to the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) values. The present data are not comprehensive enough to suggest definitive norms of the Indian Reference Man.

Effect of yoga training on exercise tolerance in adolescents with childhood asthma.

Forty six young asthmatics with a history of childhood asthma were admitted for yoga training. Effects of training on resting pulmonary functions, exercise capacity, and exercise-induced bronchial lability index were measured. Yoga training resulted in a significant increase in pulmonary function and exercise capacity. A follow-up study spanning two years showed a good response with reduced symptom score and drug requirements in these subjects. It is concluded that yoga training is beneficial for young asthmatics.

Ethnopharmacologic investigation of ginger (Zingiber officinale).

An ethanolic extract of the rhizomes of Zingiber officinale was investigated for anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antipyretic, antimicrobial and hypoglycaemic activities. In rats, the extract reduced carrageenan-induced paw swelling and yeast-induced fever but was ineffective in suppressing the writhing induced by intraperitoneal acetic acid. The extract produced blood glucose lowering in rabbits. The growth of both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria was significantly inhibited. A dose-dependent inhibition of prostaglandin release effect was observed using rat peritoneal leucocytes.

The relationship of HLA to depression and manic depression. I. The Newfoundland follow-up.

This report constitutes the Newfoundland component of a large scale replication study to assess the relationship of HLA to affective disorders; the Ontario component will be published subsequently. In a collaborative study between the University of Toronto, Memorial University and the University of Rochester, first degree family members of Probands with major affective disorder in Newfoundland were assessed for the lifetime presence of psychiatric disorder; their blood was also typed for Human Leucocyte Antigens (HLA). Because of the high rate of refusal to participate, only 10 Newfoundland families could be assessed completely. While this number of families is too small to evaluate the role of HLA as a marker of susceptibility to affective disorder, the results will be added to those of the larger Ontario component. Some problems of conducting research in communities similar to those found in Newfoundland are briefly discussed in the context of characteristics of the Probands in the study group as compared with those of subjects who refused entry into the study.

The role of oesophageal electrocardiography in the diagnosis of right ventricular hypertrophy in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Oesophageal electrocardiograms were recorded in 25 normal persons, 20 patients with chronic bronchitis and predominant emphysema without right ventricular hypertrophy and 25 patients with chronic cor pulmonale as an end result of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. At ventricular level, patients with chronic cor pulmonale had higher P wave height, lower Q wave depth, lower R wave height, deeper S waves and lower R/S ratio as compared to the group with emphysema. In terms of the transitional zone, patients with cor pulmonale had smaller Q waves and a lower Q/R ratio. At atrial level, the patients with cor pulmonale had higher heights of the P and R waves and a lower Q/R ratio. All these differences were highly significant statistically (P less than 0.001). An R/S ratio of less than 2.5 at ventricular level had high sensitivity (96.0%), specificity (100%) and accuracy (98%) in diagnosing right ventricular hypertrophy in cases of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. This criterion obtained from the oesophageal electrocardiogram is much more sensitive and accurate than those obtained routinely from the surface electrocardiogram in diagnosing right ventricular hypertrophy in cases of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Reporter molecules as probes of DNA conformation: structure of a crystalline complex containing 2-methyl-4-nitroaniline ethylene dimethylammonium hydrobromide--5-iodocytidylyl (3'-5')guanosine.

2-Methyl-4-nitroaniline ethylene dimethylammonium hydrobromide forms a crystalline complex with the self-complementary dinucleoside monophosphate, 5- iodocytidylyl (3'-5')guanosine. The crystals are tetragonal, with a = b = 32.192 A and c = 23.964 A, space group P4(3)2(1)2. The structure has been solved to atomic resolution by Patterson and Fourier methods, and refined by full matrix least squares. 5- Iodocytidylyl (3'-5')guanosine molecules are held together in pairs through Watson-Crick base-pairing, forming an antiparallel duplex structure. Nitroaniline molecules stack above and below guanine-cytosine pairs in this duplex structure. In addition, a third nitroaniline molecule stacks on one of the other two nitroaniline molecules. The asymmetric unit contains two 5- iodocytidylyl (3'-5')guanosine molecules, three nitroaniline molecules, one bromide ion and thirty-one water molecules, a total of 160 atoms. Details of the structure are described.

Environmental scanning in U.S. corporations.

Environmental scanning is a new activity among corporations, because of its importance, corporations need to progress by stages to achieve a structured and formal system of scanning, and this takes time. This paper is based on a study examining the evolution and state of environmental scanning among corporations, and finds that the essential difference between scanning at the corporate and at the product/market level is not observed by all companies. Ideally, there should be a close liaison between the two levels so that each may reinforce the scanning effort of the other.
