The comparative analysis of the effectiveness of correlated imaging techniques like plain X-ray of abdomen, ultrasonography, excretion urography, double contrast barium enema, HSG, computed tomography, was performed in the group of 92 women presenting with gynaecological tumors. The observed echostructural changes were correlated with different density of pathological tissues in CT imaging especially with contrast enhancement. Within the urinary tract, intestinal loops and contrasted ovarian tubes we assessed displacement, infiltration and segmental obliterative narrowings caused by compression.
The authors, basing on their own experience and literature data, discuss possibilities of recognizing preoperative thrombosis of vena cava inferior and renal vein in patients with kidney cancer. The material comprises 86 patients of both sexes, aged 25-82 years with operatively and microscopically verified renal cancer. Combined examinations (urosonography, USG and CT) showed the presence of venous thrombosis in 15% cases. Diagnostic value of individual techniques differed from case to case and, therefore, we think that the best diagnosis results can be obtained by using combined imaging techniques.
In the material of 124 patients with chronic inflammation of the mucous membrane of maxillary cavities, nasal ducts and ethmoidal cells, there was performed a comparative analysis of endoscopic and radiographic examination results. There was shown higher efficacy of endoscopy in revealing multiple changes, especially of polypous hypertrophy of the mucous membrane, in the assessment of nasal concha condition, and of patency of the orifices of maxillary sinuses. Endoscopic-radiographic divergences observed in about 9% of cases are considered by the authors to result from differentiation and equivocal appearance of some radiographic condensations.

CT examinations were performed on 38 children who had suffered from perinatal trauma or a later injury. The recognised changes were classified as early or distant consequences of sustained head trauma. Special attention was paid to the time elapsing from the moment of injury to the occurrence of hydrocephalus and to the evolution of changes observed in the check-up CT examinations. The occurrence of zones of diminished periventricular density was correlated with the results of fluid drainage therapy. Atrophic changes of the cerebral nervous tissues were analysed in combination with the development of porencephalic traumatic fluid cavities.
Intrauterine USG examination becomes more and more important in diagnosing developmental lesions of cerebral nervous tissue. However, CT-imaging is a method of choice, especially after parietal closure (13, 16). The character and etiology of porencephaly, congenital or acquired, is diversiform and often difficult to recognize (18). This paper presents an attempt at assessing different forms of porencephaly, taking into account congenital hydrocephalus in children by means of CT-imaging.

After presenting contemporary employed various imaging methods, the comparative evaluation of Ultrasonography and CT in examination of pancreas lesions is discussed. It was stressed that techniques mentioned above give comparable good results and that they are complementary. The authors pointed out that US is the first technique of examination of the gland and in many cases it enables the proper diagnosis, whereas CT is used when the result of US examination is doubtful. Standard scans were performed and interpreted in each patient before using US and CT examination. In cases still obscure a biopsy is indicated. The frequency of pancreas visualization is dependent not only on the quality of the equipment used, training of the investigator, correct determination of the pancreatic field, but also on the experience and cooperation of the team performing the investigation.
In the article the danger of the nuclear war and its possible medical, biological as well as environmental consequences for the population of the whole world have been presented. War is determined by political, social and economic problems, but it need not be the only way of solving complex world conflicts. War is generated in human mind and it is only human mind which can prevent it. The world-wide organization called "International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War" (IPPNW) was set up in 1981 to prove that it is better for the mankind to live in peace than to confront the nuclear peril. In case of the nuclear war health service would not be effective at all and the world's population should have no doubts about it. There is no doubt that the radiologists and other physicians, physicists working on radiation and other technical personnel are particularly responsible for popularizing in the society the knowledge of the basic physical facts and of the medical consequences of nuclear danger.

Chordomas usually occur in the axial skeleton and they arise from the remnants of notochord. Their growth is slow and they often give metastases. Such cases are mainly observed among people above 40 years of age. Most frequently chordomas are situated in sacral bone (50%), in spheno-occipital region of the skull base (35%), and in the cervical, dorsal and lumbar spine (15%). Very rarely chordomas are found within sella, paranasal sinuses and nasopharynx, and in the forms of ectopic foci in the pons and spinal canal. Such tumour situated within spine destroys vertebral bodies and arches and can bulge into subdural space causing impression of the dural sac. Despite osteolytic destruction, chordomas cause visible reactive sclerotization and characteristic granular calcifications or ossifications. Intracranial chordomas destroy bony base of skull, specially clivus, pyramids and sphenoid sinuses.
The authors compared the agreement between clinical, radiological and surgical diagnoses in 33 cases of nucleus pulposus prolapse. A complete agreement of diagnoses was obtained in 88% of cases. The mechanism and incidence of different signs and their importance for the diagnosis of nucleus pulposus prolapse are discussed. It should be stressed that the compression of nerve roots recognized on radiculography is not pathognomonic sign of prolapse and may be due to such processes as development of marginal osteophytes in the degenerative disc disease, thickening of the posterior longitudinal ligament, hypertrophy of radicular processes or necks of vertebral arches. In the light of own experiences and data from the literature the authors consider radiculography with Amipaque and computer tomography as the method of choice in cases with suspected disc herniation in the lumbar region.
In the light of the Lublin clinical center examinations and the literature data the author describes the roentgen-diagnostic methods used for recognition of the consequences of cranial injuries. The diagnostic effectiveness of different radiological techniques was compared. In cranial trauma without loss of consciousness no examination should be carried out. Skull films are of little use and may give a false safety, if no fracture is evident. Particular attention is paid to the importance of computed axial tomography in the diagnosis of various pathological conditions. It is revealed that a high agreement between the radiological results and the final clinical diagnosis in the patients with head injuries should be obtained only in the way based on a good cooperation between the radiologist and clinicians.
The purpose of the study was to present, on the basis of literature data, the possibility of examination of the central nervous system by means of magnetic nuclear resonance. Advantages and limitations of the method are described in cases of brain tumours, white matter diseases, parasitic diseases and vascular changes, inflammatory processes as well as dys-histogenesis. The main advantage of the method which will make its future use particularly wide-spread is the fact that it eliminates exposure to ionizing radiation, makes possible determination of the character of the tissue based on the content of hydrogen nucleus in a given area, and enables differentiation to be made of the tissues with different interatomic bonds, that is those which contain different chemical compounds. Diagnostic potential of computed tomography, ultrasonography, magnetic nuclear resonance, emission tomography and subtraction angiography have been compared. The hazards associated with clinical application of NMR technique are also discussed.
The authors report 7 cases of intracranial arachnoid cysts diagnosed by the method of computerized tomography in a period of 3 years. In the light of own experiences and after a survey of literature the image of these cysts in CT scans is presented an the problems of differential diagnosis of this disease are discussed.
