delta 9-tetrahydrocannabinol in clinical oncology.

After anecdotal reports of marijuana's providing antiemetic activity in cancer chemotherapy patients refractory to standard agents, orally administered delta 9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) was formally studied by a number of investigators. In six of seven well-controlled studies, orally administered THC was a superior antiemetic agent compared with control agents. The THC toxic effects are notable but manageable. Patients rarely require hospitalization after the development of THC-induced dysphorias. However, serious toxic effects are uncommon and the most frequently noted effects are somnolence, conjunctivitis, and tachycardias. Because certain subgroups of patients are more prone to have toxicities develop, careful selection of the candidates to receive this agent is mandatory. Overall, the benefits of orally administered THC use represent a major advance in antiemetic therapy.

Indicine-N-oxide: a new antitumor agent.

Indicine-N-oxide, a pyrrolizidine derivative, was selected for development because of activity in the murine P388 leukemia model. Route and schedule dependency have been demonstrated. It is believed that the antitumor activity of the drug is mediated via antimitotic effects and chromosomal damage. However, the active metabolic species responsible for these antitumor properties is not yet known. The major toxic effect was myelosuppression. Phase I clinical trials have arrived at recommended doses for further study. Colon carcinoma has been found to be possibly responsive, and several tumor types were reported stable during phase I testing. In a single phase II study in refractory leukemia, there were three responses, including one complete response, among seven patients. Phase II studies in all panel tumors are indicated, especially colon carcinoma and leukemias.

Bilateral leiomyoma of the epididymis.

The rare event of a bilateral leiomyoma of the epididymis is illustrated. The tumors were located near the tail of the epididymis in a man aged 58, which furthermore presented hydrocele and had been previously operated because of bilateral inguinal hernia. The differentiation with inflammatory pseudotumor, leiomyosarcoma and adenomatoid leiomyoma is discussed.

Treatment of superficial bladder cancer with intravesical perfusion of rIL-2: a follow-up study.

We have recently reported the results of a phase I study on the intravesical perfusion of recombinant interleukin-2 in patients with superficial bladder cancer. The treatment feasible with mild toxic effects, especially compared with the treatment using TUR and instillations of Bacillus Calmette-Guerin. The follow-up of these phase I study patients was continued for another twelve months. During this period, cytoscopy and cytological examination of cells washed from bladder were performed every four months. The results showed that three out of 9 patients relapsed, over a period ranging from 6 to 20 months after treatment. All these data clearly confirm that the intravesical perfusion of rIL-2 is feasible, safe and should be an effective and nontoxic treatment of patients with superficial bladder cancer.

[Salmonella Freetown: 1st isolation in Argentina].

In this paper we report the first case of Salmonella Freetown in Argentina. It was isolated from a stool sample of a child of 1 month and 7 days, assisted as outpatient in the Hospital de Niños Dr. Ricardo Gutiérrez of the city of Santa Fe. On the basis of the biochemical characteristics and antigenic formulae, this new serovar belongs to the species Salmonella enterica subspecies enterica.
