Cross-sectional health study in polluted and nonpolluted agricultural settlements in Israel.

During the summer of 1984 a health survey was carried out among the population of six rural settlements, three in a polluted and three in a low polluted area. Residents of these settlements between 6 and 65 years of age filled out an ATS-NHLI health questionnaire and performed the following pulmonary function tests (PFT): FVC, FEV1, FEV1/FVC, PEF, FEF50, and FEF75. A trend of higher prevalence of reported respiratory symptoms and diseases characterizes children growing up in a polluted rural as compared with a low polluted rural area. The relative risks (calculated from logistic models) for children from the polluted area to have sputum with cold is 2.13, cough accompanied by sputum 3.89, and for their siblings to have respiratory diseases 3.02, as compared with 1.00 in the low polluted area. A trend of lower PFT characterizes children from the polluted area, with significantly reduced PEF (P = 0.054). The trends for adults in the two areas were similar to those for the children. The relative risks for adults from the polluted area to have sputum is 1.7 and cough accompanied by sputum 2.6, as compared with 1.0 in the low polluted area. PEF is significantly lower (P = 0.002) among adults from the polluted area, while FEF50 and FEF75 are lower (not significantly) among adults from the low polluted area.

POEMS syndrome associated with cryoglobulinemia, lymphoma, multiple seborrheic keratosis, and ichthyosis.

The case of a patient with POEMS syndrome is presented. The characteristic features of the disorder were associated with the apparently unique and undescribed findings of multiple seborrheic keratosis, ichthyosis, livedo reticularis, and vasculitis, combined with IgM/IgG cryoglobulinemia. Analysis of the cryoprecipitate revealed monoclonal IgM, with kappa light chains. Six years later an immunoblastic lymphoma developed. Notably, the paraneoplastic cutaneous signs were present 6 years before the development of the immunoblastic lymphoma.

Bullous eruption in a case of bullous pediculid.

We present a case of a bullous eruption appearing in a patient with pediculosis pubis. The eruption was apparently a reaction to the pediculi, possibly to their salivary secretions. To our knowledge, this is the first report of such a case. We have called this condition "bullous pediculid."

Transformation of Arthrobacter and studies on the transcription of the Arthrobacter ermA gene in Streptomyces lividans and Escherichia coli.

We report the development of a plasmid-mediated transformation system for Arthrobacter sp. NRRLB3381, using the Streptomyces cloning vector pIJ702. Our procedure gives a transformation frequency of 10(3)/micrograms of plasmid DNA. In addition we have explored the expression of the Arthrobacter ermA gene in Streptomyces lividans and Escherichia coli, and shown that the ermA promoter is recognized in S. lividans not E. coli. The relationship between Arthrobacter, Streptomyces and E. coli promoters is discussed.

Free alpha-subunit response to gonadotropin-releasing hormone in women with polycystic ovaries.

The response of glycoprotein hormone free alpha-subunit to gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) was evaluated in 12 women with polycystic ovaries (PCOs). Six of these women were premedicated for 3 days with micronized 17 beta-estradiol before receiving a 100-micrograms bolus of GnRH. In nonmedicated PCO patients, GnRH did not significantly alter basal free alpha-subunit levels. In four of the six PCO patients receiving estrogen premedication, a significant increase in free alpha-subunit was observed; these four patients had low progesterone levels at the time of the GnRH test. Among the six premedicated patients, two had elevated (greater than 4 ng/ml) progesterone levels, and the GnRH tests showed no significant effect on the levels of free alpha-subunit. The study revealed a dissociation between the free alpha-subunit responses to GnRH and the responses of luteinizing hormone; a closer relationship was observed between free alpha-subunit and follicle-stimulating hormone responses. It was concluded that the lack of a free alpha-subunit response to GnRH in PCO patients is not due to a primary inability of the pituitary gonadotroph to produce free alpha-subunit but is a consequence of an altered estrogenic milieu, and a free alpha-subunit response to GnRH may reflect the replenishment of both follicle-stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone in the gonadotrope.

Acquired ichthyosis in AIDS.

A case of a patient with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and acquired ichthyosis in conjunction with Kaposi's sarcoma is reported. The possibility of a connection between acquired ichthyosis and immune deficiency, particularly AIDS, is presented.

Cloning and sequencing of the gene encoding cytochrome c3 from Desulfovibrio vulgaris (Hildenborough).

The gene encoding the redox protein cytochrome c3 from Desulfovibrio vulgaris (Hildenborough) has been cloned using two synthetic oligonucleotides (one 17-mer and one 18-mer), designed to recognize the structural gene. Plasmid pCYC3 was derived from the clone and contains a 7.5 X 10(3)-base EcoRI-HindIII insert of D. vulgaris DNA in pUC9. A 674-base-pair fragment of this insert was sequenced with the dideoxy-chain-termination procedure and found to contain the entire structural gene encoding cytochrome c3 bracketed by apparent Escherichia coli consensus sequences for initiation and termination of transcription. The amino acid sequence of 107 residues, derived from protein sequencing [Trousil, E. B. and Campbell, L. L. (1974) J. Biol. Chem. 249, 386-393], is confirmed by the nucleic acid sequence, which shows in addition that it is preceded by a hydrophobic, positively charged signal sequence of 21 residues. This amino-terminal extension functions in the export of cytochrome c3, which is thought to reside in the periplasm of D. vulgaris.

A novel calmodulin-like gene from the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans.

A novel gene from the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans was isolated by hybridization with a human calmodulin complementary DNA probe. This gene, cal-1, is present at one copy per haploid genome. In-situ hybridization of the cloned gene to metaphase chromosomes allowed us to assign it to the nematode linkage group IV. The polypeptide predicted from the sequence of this gene displays structural features of both calmodulin and troponin C.

Review of the Israeli Technical Committee for Asbestos.

The concern of the Israeli public regarding health hazards arising from asbestos use led to the formation of a governmental body responsible for finding solutions to these problems. This body was formed in 1983 as a National Medical Committee and included representatives from governmental and nongovernmental bodies. The Israeli Technical Committee for Asbestos, which serves as a subsidiary of the National Medical Committee, is concerned with the technical aspects associated with health hazards associated with asbestos and other harmful dusts. This report describes the major activities of the Technical Committee during the last 2 years.
