Implementation of an elective wellness course.

In an effort to increase knowledge and attitudes toward promoting health rather than treating disease, faculty in one school developed an elective wellness course open to all university students. The authors discuss how students learned concepts of wellness and developed individualized plans to improve their own health status.

Central auditory processing disorder as the presenting manifestation of subtle brain pathology.

The objective of this case-report study was to assess the presence of central auditory impairment in a patient with a normal neurological examination. This subject was a 45-year-old female with gradually deteriorating hearing difficulties over a period of 5 years and a borderline normal audiogram. Behavioural central auditory tests were used, including Dichotic Sentence Identification Test, Competing Sentences Test, and auditory event-related potentials (mismatch negativity). Behavioural central auditory tests and mismatch negativity results were abnormal and indicated disordered central auditory processing. Subsequent magnetic resonance imaging of the brain identified subtle changes consistent with small-vessel ischaemic disease. Adult patients who present with hearing difficulties that cannot be explained on the basis of their audiogram should undergo central auditory assessment, as the auditory symptoms may be the first and only manifestation of central nervous system pathology.

Microwave applicator for transurethral hyperthermia of benign prostatic hyperplasia.

An applicator for heating the prostate gland using a transurethral approach is described. This technique uses three microwave antennas and a thermometry sensor attached to the outer surface of a balloon (Foley) type urological catheter. Each microwave antenna also includes a built-in thermistor to control temperature and balance power. The balloon catheter assures rapid and reproducible localization of the antennas in the prostatic urethra. The two-dimensional SAR and steady-state temperature distributions surrounding the applicator in tissue equivalent phantom are reported. Longitudinal temperature distributions measured in situ at the applicator-urethral interface and the longitudinal and radial temperature distributions measured in normal canine prostate are presented and discussed. The technique appears to be capable of elevating temperature to greater than 42 degrees C in a cylindrically symmetrical volume up to 5 cm length and 0.5 cm radial penetration surrounding the applicator.

Heating characteristics of a helical microwave applicator for transurethral hyperthermia of benign prostatic hyperplasia.

A new applicator for intraurethral hyperthermic treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia is described. The applicator uses an insulated helical antenna wound on the outer surface of a silicone urological (Foley) balloon catheter. The balloon catheter assures rapid and reproducible localization of the antenna in the prostatic urethra. Two small cannulae are fixed to the exterior surface of the applicator. One holds a temperature control sensor at a fixed location, the other is used to map temperature along the applicator. Two-dimensional SAR and steady-state temperature distributions measured in a plane tangent to the applicator in a tissue-equivalent phantom are presented, as well as longitudinal temperature distributions measured in situ at the applicator-urethral interface. Prostatic temperatures were also measured intraoperatively. The applicator appears to be capable of elevating temperature to greater than 42 degrees C in a cylindrically symmetric volume of about 4 cm length and about 0.5 cm radial penetration surrounding the antenna. The heating characteristics of this applicator are similar to an earlier design that employed an array of three dipoles. The helical applicator is narrower, more flexible and simpler to use than the earlier design.

Application of antibody adsorbed polyester cloth for the rapid screening of elution conditions for antigen immunopurification.

Antibody adsorbed onto polyester cloth did not desorb during a 20 hour agitated incubation in commonly used antigen-antibody dissociating agents. Antibody activity on the cloth was also unaffected by five 20 min cycles of agitation in these agents. Use of cloth segments coated with a model antibody, goat anti-rabbit IgG antibody, permitted rapid screening of elution conditions for the immunoaffinity purification of a model antigen, rabbit IgG. Thus, this simple test is useful for designing an optimal immunoaffinity chromatographic procedure.

Professional nursing roles. The reintegration of patient teaching.

This article stresses the critical nature of the education function of the nurse and suggests strategies for reintegrating teaching as a professional role. It is important that administrators value teaching and that staff development departments assist nurses in refining teaching skills.
