Changes in sympathetic activity during high frequency T.E.N.S.

Recent studies have clarified some of the relationship between the autonomic nervous system and causalgic pain, but much is not known about the nature of pain. It is known that TENS may help to alleviate the chronic pain resulting from peripheral nerve lesions, and various beneficial results are usually ascribed to subjects who have pain. Our own study measured various parameters before and after TENS in healthy subjects, and these findings contrasted markedly with the results attributed to TENS in subjects suffering from pain. This raises interesting questions about the nature of TENS as a pain control.

[Evaluation of several neuropsychological parameters in subjects occupationally exposed to anesthetics].

51 workers, occupationally exposed to anaesthetic gases and vapours (nitrous oxide, halothane, and isoflurane), were studied monitoring their environmental and biological exposure. Moreover, they were tested for visual reaction times and neurobehavioural batteries. There was no evidence of important neurotoxic effects nor of neurobehavioural problems with low concentrations of anaesthetics.

Algodystrophy: pathophysiological considerations.

Algodystrophy can follow a wide variety of painful disorders and the Sympathetically Maintained Pain (SMP) syndromes form a chapter of medicine which is far more important than generally considered. The abnormal central sensitization of internucial pools of spinal neurones must be considered as the crucial element of these painful states. Treatment must be carried out in the first phase in order to minimize the state of spinal hypersensitivity.
