Modification of the macaque's vestibulo-ocular reflex after ablation of the cerebellar vermis.

In macaque, the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) as evaluated by the time constant of nystagmus in a modified Bárány spinning test, shows a regular pattern of change with time after ablation of the vermis cerebelli. One day ablation the time constant is in the low normal range; it then increases, and after one week assumes values in the high normal range. While the time constant is high, the VOR is resistant to modification by repeated testing, but may be modified by unidirectional optokinetic nystagmus and by experience with reversing spectacles. These results suggest that the vermis of the cerebellum plays no crucial role in modifications of the VOR by visual inputs, but is involved when the VOR is modified by repeated vestibular experience.

Response of the vestibulo-ocular reflex to differing programs of acceleration.

The vestibulo-ocular reflex of normal monkeys was tested by a modified Bárány spinning test (B-test) and by sinosoidal rotation. The two tests gave concordant estimates of the time constant and corner frequency. Deviation from concordance was caused largely by modification of the reflex during the testing procedures. As a means of estimating both time constant and corner frequency in the vestibulo-ocular reflex, the B-test is to be preferred to sinusoidal rotation because although both tests provide similar information, the B-test is the more rapidly performed and analyzed and the B-test modifies the reflex less.

Occurrence of a binding protein for 11-cis-retinal in retina.

A binding protein for retinal has been found in the soluble protein fraction of bovine retina. It was separable from the intracellular retinol- and retinoic acid-binding proteins by gel filtration on Sephadex G-100 and appeared to have a molecular weight of about 50,000. The new binding protein did not bind retinol or retinoic acid. The binding protein neither oxidized retinal in the presence of reduced pyridine nucleotides and is presumed, therefore, not to be a dehydrogenase. Bound retinal was reduced to retinol in the presence of liver alcohol dehydrogenase and NADH, indicating that the functional group remained accessible when in the protein complex. The binding protein bound cis isomers of retinal preferentially. Bound ligand was displaced most effectively by 11-cis-retinal. When individual cis-trans isomers of retinal were presented to the binding protein, binding was maximal with the 11-cis isomer. It is proposed that the protein be referred to as 11-cis-retinal-binding protein.

Plasmodium falciparum: diversity studies of isolates from two Colombian regions with different endemicity.

The population structure of Plasmodium falciparum has been widely studied in diverse epidemiological contexts, but emphasis has been made in regions with high and stable transmission. In order to establish the genetic structure of P. falciparum in areas of Colombia with different degree of endemicity, we studied 100 samples from malaria patients of two different municipalities. The frequency of multiclonal infection in these areas and the correlation with the endemicity were carried out by comparison of the amplified products from polymorphic segments of MSP-1, MSP-2, and GLURP genes. We found low size polymorphism of the studied genes: 1 MSP-1 allele, 3 MSP-2 alleles, and 4 GLURP alleles. We conclude that the P. falciparum population in the regions studied is genetically homogeneous.

Surgical resection improves survival in the treatment of early gastric lymphomas.

Gastric lymphomas are a relatively rare form of malignancy and controversy about their optimum treatment still exists. To date, there have been no studies directly comparing results of medical therapy alone versus a combination of surgery plus medical therapy. We reviewed our experience in the three teaching hospitals of the University of Massachusetts Medical School to determine the role of surgery in the management of early gastric lymphoma. Statistics were evaluated by means of chi-square, log-rank, and Kaplan-Meier curve analysis where appropriate. Using tumor registry data, 39 patients were treated for early disease at our medical school from 1980 to 1998. Patients treated with surgery plus chemotherapy and radiation had a 90% 5-year survival compared to patients who received chemotherapy and radiation alone (55% 5-year survival; P <0.01). When we compared all patients on an intention-to-treat basis (patients preoperatively thought to have early-stage disease), there was still a significant survival benefit with the addition of surgery to their management. Because this is an uncommon disease, there are no large prospective studies examining treatment. Based on our retrospective experience, surgical resection should be considered an important adjunct in the treatment of gastric lymphomas in early-stage disease.

Humoral immune response to the anti-malaria vaccine SPf66 in the Colombian Atrato River region.

The immunogenicity of anti-malaria synthetic vaccine SPf66 was tested in a region of the Colombian middle Atrato river. The specific serum antibodies against SPf66 were quantified in vaccinees and placebo injected controls for a two-years period post-immunization. The frequency of individuals showing seroconversion of anti-SPf66 antibodies three months after completion of the immunization schedule was higher in vaccinees than in controls (52.7% and 25.5%, respectively, p < 0.01). However, an over than four-fold increase of the specific anti-SPf66 antibody titers was observed only in 1.4% of vaccinees and 0.2% of the controls (p < 0.01). The anti-SPf66 antibody titers augmented in vaccinees from first dose application to three months after the third dose, continuously decreasing thereafter to reach below baseline values two years after completion of the immunization schedule. The results show that SPf66 has very low immunogenicity and induces a short term humoral immune response (six months).
