One photon two electron excitations between doubly excited states of helium.

Variational calculations using Hylleraas coordinates have been performed for the first time for estimating the energies of 3dnf((1,3)D(o)) state of helium for n=4,5,6. We predict absorption peaks at 12.219, 12.647, and 12.857 eV for the (3)D(o) series converging to N=3 ionization threshold of He(+) which can be expected to be observed in the experiment of single photon double excitation of lowest (3)P(e) state of helium placed in synchrotron radiation.

Phase evolution and sintering kinetics of hydroxyapatite synthesized by solution combustion technique.

Solution combustion technique has been used to prepare hydroxypatite (HAp) powder from calcium nitrate, di-ammonium hydrogen phosphate and citric acid precursors. Phase evolution has been studied as a function of calcination temperatures. The crystal structure, phase purity and stiochiometry of phase have been studied by Rietveld analysis of the calcined powder. It was observed that the prepared Hap powder was phase pure and stoichiometric. The sintering behaviour and sintering kinetics of the HAp compact has been studied by dilatometer. Activation energy for sintering has been calculated from the dilatometer results. Grain boundary diffusion was found to be the dominant densification mechanism during the initial stage of sintering. The activation energy for sintering (438 kJ/mol) was found to be in excellent agreement with reported value.

Aspects regarding measurement of thickness of intergranular glassy films.

Materials such as Si(3)N(4), SiC and SrTiO(3) can have grain boundaries characterized by the presence of a thin intergranular amorphous film of nearly constant thickness, in some cases (e.g. Si(3)N(4)) almost independent of the orientation of the bounding grains, but dependent on the composition of the ceramic. Microscopy techniques such as high-resolution lattice fringe imaging, Fresnel fringe imaging and diffuse dark field imaging have been applied to the study of intergranular glassy films. The theme of the current investigation is the use of Fresnel fringes and Fourier filtering for the measurement of the thickness of intergranular glassy films. Fresnel fringes hidden in high-resolution micrographs can be used to objectively demarcate the glass-crystal interface and to measure the thickness of intergranular glassy films. Image line profiles obtained from Fourier filtering the high-resolution micrographs can yield better estimates of the thickness. Using image simulation, various kinds of deviation from an ideal square-well potential profile and their effects on the Fresnel image contrast are considered. A method is also put forth to objectively retrieve Fresnel fringe spacing data by Fourier filtering Fresnel contrast images. Difficulties arising from the use of the standard Fresnel fringe extrapolation technique are outlined and an alternative method for the measurement of the thickness of intergranular glassy films, based on zero-defocus (in-focus) Fresnel contrast images is suggested. The experimental work is from two ceramic systems: Lu-Mg-doped Si(3)N(4) and SrTiO(3) (stoichiometric and nonstoichiometric). Further, a comparison is made between the standard high-resolution lattice fringe technique, the standard Fresnel fringe extrapolation technique and the methods of analyses introduced in the current work, to illustrate their utility and merits. Taking experimental difficulties into account, this work is intended to be a practical tool kit for the study of intergranular glassy films.

e19a2 BCR-ABL fusion transcript in typical chronic myeloid leukaemia: a report of two cases.

This report describes two patients with chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML): one of them developed accelerated phase CML and died 8 years after diagnosis and the other is at the chronic phase. Sequence analysis of reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction products showed the presence of BCR-ABL fusion transcript e19a2. This finding suggests that CML carrying mu-BCR breakpoint may exhibit a clinical course similar to typical CML.

Pest control through viral disease: mathematical modeling and analysis.

This paper deals with the mathematical modeling of pest management under viral infection (i.e. using viral pesticide) and analysis of its essential mathematical features. As the viral infection induces host lysis which releases more virus into the environment, on the average 'kappa' viruses per host, kappain(1,infinity), the 'virus replication parameter' is chosen as the main parameter on which the dynamics of the infection depends. We prove that there exists a threshold value kappa(0) beyond which the endemic equilibrium bifurcates from the free disease one. Still for increasing kappa values, the endemic equilibrium bifurcates towards a periodic solution. We further analyse the orbital stability of the periodic orbits arising from bifurcation by applying Poor's condition. A concluding discussion with numerical simulation of the model is then presented.

Mode of action of a potentially important excretory--secretory product from Giardia lamblia in mice enterocytes.

Giardia, a common enteric protozoan parasite is a well-recognized cause of diarrhoeal illness. The detailed mechanism of diarrhoea due to this infection is not well understood. A 58 kDa enterotoxin (ESP) was purified from the excretory-secretory product of the parasite. The present study was designed to investigate the mode of action of this enterotoxin of G. lamblia in mice enterocytes. An increase in cyclic adenosine monophosphate level, as well as intracellular Ca2+ concentration, was observed in the ESP-triggered enterocytes. The levels of phospholipase Cgamma1 and inositol triphosphate were found to be upregulated. The activity of protein kinase C (PKC) in the enterocytes was also enhanced following stimulation with the ESP. An increase in the level of reactive oxygen species in ESP-stimulated cells correlated well with the decline in the activity of antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase and catalase). The significantly high levels of nitrite and citrulline indicated the generation of reactive nitrogen intermediates in the ESP-triggered enterocytes. Thus, ESP could induce cross-talk among the different signal transduction pathways in the enterocytes, which could together bring about a common secretory response.

Frequency-dependent prey-selection of predacious water bugs on Armigeres subalbatus immatures.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: The predatory behaviour with reference to the frequency-dependent prey-selection of the water bugs Sphaerodema annulatum Fabricius and S. rusticum Fabricius was studied in the laboratory using the IV instar larvae and pupae of Armigeres subalbatus as prey to ascertain their efficacy as predator of mosquito immatures. METHODS: Field collected adult morphs of the water bugs were allowed to predate on larvae and pupae provided in different ratios and densities as per the model of Greenwood and Elton' for a fixed time period. The data obtained on their predation rate were analysed with respect to the model parameters, lnV--the frequency independent component and b--the frequency dependent component of selection. RESULTS: It was found that the prey-selection was dependent on the relative numbers of prey available, favouring apostatic selection. The b values and lnV values for S. annulatum were 0.54 +/- 0.01 and 0.92 +/- 1.04 respectively whereas the corresponding values for S. rusticum were 0.71 +/- 0.03 and 0.17 +/- 1.57 respectively. INTERPRETATION & CONCLUSION: The selection of preys by the water bugs was dependent on the relative number of the prey forms and thus they are expected to predate on the form more abundant in a heterogeneous prey population and adversely affect the adult emergence.

Spin asymmetry in an intense-field ionization process.

A relativistic analysis of the rate of spin flips in ionization of an ensemble of Dirac H atoms subjected to intense circularly polarized laser fields is made. A remarkable intensity-dependent asymmetry between the spin up and spin down electron currents is found. It is nonzero even when the retardation effect, hence the magnetic component of the field, as well as the spin-orbit interaction responsible for the well-known Fano effect, is negligible. Transformation properties of the amplitudes show that the sign of asymmetry can be controlled by changing the helicity of the laser photons from outside.

Phylogenetic conservation of the stem-loop III structure of the 5' untranslated region of Hepatitis C virus RNA among natural variants in samples collected from Southern India.

The stem-loop III (SLIII) structure within the 5' untranslated region has been shown to be critical for internal initiation of translation of Hepatitis C virus (HCV). Using 'Single Strand Conformation Polymorphism (SSCP)' of the SLIII region we have investigated for natural mutations and demonstrated presence of some non-covariant changes in certain sub-domains. However, overall SLIII-RNA structure was found to be phylogenetically conserved. Additionally, by SSCP analysis we have determined the genotype of 50 HCV isolates collected from Southern India, 25 random samples were confirmed by DNA sequencing. Results showed the prevalence of genotype 1 in this part of India.

Predatory efficiency of the water bug Sphaerodema annulatum on mosquito larvae (Culex quinquefasciatus) and its effect on the adult emergence.

The daily number of IV instar larva of Culex quinquefasciatus killed, rate of pupation and adult emergence was noted in presence of the predatory water bug Sphaerodema annulatum for a period of seven consecutive days, experimentally, in the laboratory. The rate of IV instar larva killed by the water bugs on an average was 65.17 per day. The rate of pupation ranged between 7.6 and 48 in control while in presence of water bugs it ranged between 6 and 35. The rate of adult emergence in control experiments varied between 1.4 and 4.8 per day, which was reduced to only 0.4-28.8 per day in case of the water bugs. The results clearly indicate that the water bugs on its way of predation reduces the rate of pupation and adult emergence of Cx. quinquefasciatus significantly which calls for an extensive field trials.

Relationship between hydrocarbon measurements and toxicity to a chironomid, fish larva and daphnid for oils and oil spill chemical treatments in laboratory freshwater marsh microcosms.

This research investigated the extent to which various common hydrocarbon measures can be used to predict toxicity to freshwater aquatic organisms due to fouling by oil. Actual toxicity results, on laboratory freshwater marsh microcosms using two water-column species and a benthic species, were described earlier. The hydrocarbon measures used were TPH(g), TPH(FID), TPH(MS), TTAH (sum of 41 target aromatic hydrocarbons), principal components of 41 TAHs, and each individual TAH. In general, toxicity was more closely related to TPH(MS) levels than to TPH(FID) and (especially) TPH(g) levels. The strongest relationships were found for TTAH levels and for the principal components of the TAHs. Regressions of toxicity on many individual TAHs were also strong, with a single group of compounds explaining as much as 59% of the variation in survival. While the various regressions were highly significant statistically and at times able to accurately predict broad differences in toxicity, the high variation in survival at a specific hydrocarbon concentration indicates that these hydrocarbon measures can not substitute for actual toxicity determinations in accurately ranking the toxicity of samples from oiled freshwater marshes.

The alteration in signal transduction parameters induced by the excretory-secretory product from Giardia lamblia.

The mechanism by which Giardia lamblia exerts its pathogenicity is likely to be multifactorial. A 58 kDa enterotoxin was purified and characterized from the excretory-secretory product (ESP) of the parasite (Kaur et al. 2001). In the present study an attempt has been made to elucidate the mechanism of action of the ESP, a potentially important enterotoxin. A 41 kDa glycoprotein was identified in the mouse enterocyte membrane fraction with which the ESP interacted in a GM1-specific manner. The GTPase activity was reduced in enterocytes stimulated with the ESP, resulting in an increase in the level of adenylate cyclase-dependent cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP). The activity of protein kinase A (PKA) in the enterocytes was also upregulated after ESP treatment. Ultimately, a significant increase in intracellular Ca2+ concentration and decrease in cytosolic Cl- level were noticed in ESP-stimulated mouse enterocytes. Thus it is possible that the enterotoxic ESP could bind to the 41 kDa glycoprotein (receptor?) on the enterocytes and activate the G-protein-mediated signal transduction pathway resulting in alteration of electrolyte transport.

Endometrioid carcinoma of uterus and ovary.

A thirty-two-year-old married woman presented with pain abdomen and polymenorrhoea. Her uterus was bulky and one of the fornices was full. USG of abdomen revealed unilateral ovarian tumour associated with a mass in the uterus. Histopathological report revealed synchronous endometrioid carcinoma of the uterus and the ovary with morphological evidences in favour of independent primary carcinomas. With these perspectives the present case is reported where endometrioid carcinomas of uterus and ovary are two separate primary tumours.

Global amplification of mRNA by template-switching PCR: linearity and application to microarray analysis.

Conventional approaches to target labelling for expression microarray analysis typically require relatively large amounts of total RNA, a serious limitation when the sample available is small. Here we explore the cycle-dependent amplification characteristics of Template-Switching PCR and validate its use for microarray target labelling. TS-PCR identifies up to 80% of the differentially expressed genes identified by direct labelling using 30-fold less input RNA for the amplification, with the equivalent of 1000-fold less starting material being used for each hybridisation. Moreover, the sensitivity of microarray experiments is increased considerably, allowing the identification of differentially expressed transcripts below the level of detection using targets prepared by direct labelling. We have also validated the fidelity of amplification and show that the amplified material faithfully represents the starting mRNA population. This method outperforms conventional labelling strategies, not only in terms of sensitivity and the identification of differentially expressed genes, but it is also faster and less labour intensive than other amplification protocols.

Quinacrine sterilization (QS): the ethical issues.

QS has generated debates that are ultimately grounded in various principles, norms, and values. Through a careful analysis of opposing arguments, this paper focuses on two ethical principles claimed by both sides, namely: respect for life and beneficence. Though issues surrounding QS are complex, from the common ground of these two principles, this paper proposes a course of action that addresses many of the concerns from both points of view.
