Hepatitis-B surface antigen and VDRL in healthy blood donors of Brunei Darussalam.

We screened 3276 voluntary blood donors for Hepatitis-B surface antigen (HBsAg) and VDRL. The results were analysed to assess the prevalence and the possible relation to age, sex, race and blood group. Our present study was done in Belait District of Brunei Darussalam where we have a mixed population of various racial groups namely Malays, Chinese, Ibans, Dusuns, Kelabits, Kadazans, Nepalese, Filipinos, Thais, Koreans, Eurasians, Indians, British, Dutch, Americans, Africans and Australians. Our findings suggest that the prevalence of HBsAg is 4.71% and that of VDRL is 0.64% of the donor population. HBsAg positivity rate among various blood groups is found to be not statistically significant (p greater than 0.05). However, this rate is found to be highly significant among racial groups (p less than 0.001) and the rate of positivity of VDRL is also found to be significantly different among racial groups (p less than 0.01), with the highest percentage of both being in the Ibans.

Thyroid hormone binds to human corpus luteum.

A high affinity, low capacity 3,5,3'-triiodo-L-thyronine (T3) specific binding was detected in the nuclei preparation from human corpus luteal nuclei by using an in vitro thyroid hormone binding assay. The bound hormone was efficiently separated from free hormone by the use of 40% polyethylene glycol. Under standardized assay conditions of pH 8.6 at 37 degrees C and a 2-h incubation time, the binding in the corpus luteal nuclei was saturable with Kd 4.94 x 10(-10) M with low maximum binding capacity (1.70 p mol/mg DNA). Competitive binding studies with hormone analogues indicated that T3 binding to corpus luteal nuclei is hormone-specific. Findings indicated a direct effect of thyroid hormone on the human corpus luteum.

Comparison of repeated DNA from strains of Entamoeba histolytica and other Entamoeba.

Restriction enzyme digestion patterns of total genomic DNA revealed the presence of highly repeated DNA in Entamoeba histolytica and E. histolytica-like (Laredo type) amoebae of humans, E. invadens and E. invadens and E. terrapinae of reptiles, and E. moshkovskii isolated from sewage polluted waters. Homology with Plasmodium berghei ribosomal DNA was striking. Northern blot analysis of E. histolytica RNA provided further evidence that the highly repeated DNA codes for ribosomal RNA. The distribution of restriction enzyme sites on repeated DNA of the Entamoeba was highly polymorphic. Thus it was possible, based on EcoRI digestion patterns, to distinguish between strains of E. histolytica and the other species of Entamoeba. Additionally, these investigations at the molecular level corroborate previously reported physiological and biochemical evidence indicating the E. histolytica-like amoebae and E. histolytica are not conspecific. EcoRI fragments from repeated DNA of E. histolytica (strain HM-1: IMSS) were cloned in the plasmid vector pTZ18R. A subfragment from one of these clones proved to be a useful hybridization probe in distinguishing E. histolytica from the other Entamoeba.

Simple micromotility recorder for rapid screening of potentially anthelmintic compounds.

A simple micromotility recorder for monitoring the motility of small nematodes (adult) is described. Normal motility of Ancylostoma ceylanicum and Nematospiroides dubius was recorded. The time course to cause paralysis (paralysis time) was also observed in the presence of various anthelmintics, e.g., Levamisole, Pyrantel; and Ivermectin at graded concentrations. This is a simple in vitro model for screening of potential anthelmintic compounds.

Bjork-Shiley cardiac valves long term results: Winnipeg experience.

Between April 1970 and December 1984, 1183 Bjork-Shiley cardiac valve prostheses were implanted in 915 patients (470 males, 445 females). Four types of valves were used; Delrin disc prostheses in 75 patients, pyrolytic carbon spherical disc valves in 645 patients, the 60 degrees convexo-concave disc model in 197 patients and the 70 degrees model in seven patients. Isolated mitral valve replacement was performed in 278 patients, isolated aortic valve replacement in 363 and double valve replacement in 153. Concomitant surgery was performed in 121 patients, including a modified Bentall procedure in 15. Perioperative mortality was 6.4% (nine patients undergoing isolated aortic valve replacement; 16 in mitral valve group, 18 with double valve replacement and 16 undergoing concomitant surgery). The cumulative follow-up was 4592 patient-years, to a maximum of 15 years. There were 130 late deaths, 60% due to cardiac events. Actuarial survival for the mitral valve group was as follows: four of six patients with Delrin disc valves were alive at 13.4 years; in the pyrolytic group, survival was 82% at 10 years; in the 60 degrees convexo-concave group survival was 87.5% at seven years. In the aortic valve replacement group, 83% of patients with pyrolytic valves were alive at 10 years and 85.7% of the 60 degree convexo-concave group were alive at seven years. For patients undergoing double valve replacement, 72% were still alive after seven years. Thromboembolic events averaged 1.4 per 100 patient-years. There were seven complete valve thromboses in the mitral position requiring reoperation; six of these patients were long term survivors.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Target and nontarget actions of phenthoate and carbofuran: brain acetylcholinesterase, kidney iodide peroxidase, and blood thyroxine profiles in Channa punctatus.

Phenthoate- and carbofuran-containing insecticides are widely used by Indian farmers, thus endangering fish by exposing them to the hazards of a chronic low dose of these xenobiotics. Channa punctatus, cultivated under paddy-cum-fish culture programs, was treated with 176 ppb phenthoate, 333 ppb carbofuran, or a mixture of 88 ppb phenthoate plus 250 ppb carbofuran for 15 days. The rate of mortality was 10% in all treatments. These xenobiotics caused significant inhibition of brain acetylcholinesterase concomitant with low kidney iodide peroxidase activity and depressed blood thyroxine levels. It is surmised that phenthoate and carbofuran compounds are capable of significantly influencing the hormonal status of fish which is mediated via their target action on the nervous system.
