Transdiaphragmatic extension of hepatic hydatid cyst.

Transdiaphragmatic extension of hydatid cyst (HC) or cystic echinococcosis (CE) of the liver is a rare phenomenon. We report a case that presented as a right middle lobe consolidation. The diagnosis of transdiaphragmatic extension of hepatic hydatid cyst was suspected on CT scan of the chest and abdomen, and confirmed operatively. A successful outcome was achieved by a combination of pre- and post-operative albendazole therapy combined with surgery.

Central pontine myelinolysis.

The case is described of a 46 year old female alcoholic, presenting with confusion, jaundice and reduced level of consciousness. The patient was hyponatraemic on admission and despite gradual correction of serum sodium the patient deteriorated neurologically. Magnetic Resonance Imaging scan of the brain revealed characteristic findings of Central Pontine Myelinolysis (CPM). We provide an overview of the first published cases of CPM. The clinical and pathological features of CPM are described. No specific therapy has been shown to improve outcome; current literature advocates supportive management. Identification of patients at risk and gradual correction of hyponatraemia is recommended.

An evaluation of closest speaking space using various sibilants amongst age groups of both sexes.

Closest speaking space plays a crucial role in the success of complete denture prosthesis. For proper phonetics, esthetic and comfort there should be minimum amount of separation between the incisal edges of upper and lower anterior teeth during speech. The present study shows that there is no significant variation in closest speaking space amongst different age groups of both sexes and between sibilants. However, there is a significant difference in closest speaking space amongst individuals.
